Totally agree, to me, the two moments that really made me feel Kai stepped up is when he asks Wyldfyre if she thought "Master Wu only trained him to punch and kick" and that "there is more way to be a Ninja" than fighting. Making him "the healer" (more than the "healing parent to Wyldfyre by healing Heatwave) really expands him as we would expect the hothead to always fight and not care about the rest. Even Wyldfyre originally agrees with her "Duh" but here, he shows his experience as a ninja. We've never seen him do this before, but it was actually logical, the Ninjas had dragons before, it would make sense to learn how to take care of them, and I could very well imagine Kai being very invested in it because he has a strong love for those around him. To save his sister is the reason he became a Ninja in the first place, after all. The second moment is when he's trapped in Nether Space and talks to Bonzle, the original kai would have pleaded with her to keep the portal open so he can get out, because the original Kai had a lot of selfishness "You always thoughts you should have been the one" said Lloyd in season 4. Instead, the first thing he does is tell Bonzle to close the gate as soon as possible, because his life be damned, he can't allow more of the Forbidden Five to cross over. He grew to be selfless to the point he doesn't hesitate a second to make the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good, really showing how much more mature he grew up to be. The original Ninjago show made Kai a ninja, Dragon Rising made him a hero.
I got the feeling that this is something that Kai fans waited for from pilots. He was the worst from the beginning, and by sheer hard work(in DR), honor, and bravery he saved everyone and was "the MAN that took care of everyone". They definitely didn't plan it, but it's really satisfying.

To me him wanting to be the green ninja was because he was self conscious about his place in the team. 1. He was the odd one as he was the newest in the team in the pilot. 2. He was the last one to gain his true potential So he thought that he needed to be the green ninja in order to fit into the team. To prove himself he did things that is wreckless attacking gamadon and causing the eruption of the volcano. This all came to the point where he had a monent seeing the fang blade and lloyd and realising what his role is being able to let go (the thing holding him back and something morrow couldnt do) and save lloyd as his place is to protect the green ninja.
I understand what you're saying but you forgot one thing. Season 7. There not only does kai have a character arc but one that isn't about jealousy. Instead it is about obsession and understanding, arguably this is the perfect arc for a hot head because he gets too hotheaded to think straight or listen to reason when he finally does meet Ray. But that was 2017. So it's been a hot minute since kai has had something good. Until now.

It also has to do with Jay missing I think because since season 7 Jay and Kai have been literally the same character: same jokes, same dialogue etc. One is just Nya’s brother and the other her boyfriend. But still the writers did him justice with better writing I can’t deny this, but I also think that Jay missing has to do with it.

I will say that I do appreciate Wildfire for bringing this out in him, but for me, that is all she is. I find both her and Lloyd very annoying. I can't wait to see more of this new Kai!
With season 4, kai wasn’t holding resentment of being jealous of lloyd, him getting corrupted. The staff is meant to corrupt those who wield it and become power hungry. Chen manipulated Kai into having him turn on Lloyd and used his past jealousy as a result of getting what he wants out of Kai. Not that Kai true feelings were always intended to be jealous of Lloyd. And even afterwards Kai threw down the staff immediately and starts contemplating in what just happened. Clearly showing that isn’t the Kai we know and love but instead was being controlled. And for season 11 it has nothing to do with Kai being jealous that he’s powerless and the other ninjas aren’t, it’s the fact that Kai feels helpless due to him not having powers made him temporarily loose hope as a ninja, he didn’t feel confident enough to fit in the role in the team at the time. There’s other scenes where Kai shows that he’s jealous mainly with the green ninja stuff . But the other scenes you brought up in context doesn’t fit within that same limelight of him being jealous. But aside from all that I am glad they’re realizing Kai’s importance in the show again and making his character better

It wasn't until the change of designs that the writing felt off, about not just Kai, but the rest of the ninja as well. Just because you're accepting something doesn't mean you are 100% at peace with it. That's just lazy writing saying, "yeah, let's now pretend Kai never wanted to be the green ninja in the first place." I personally liked seeing the anger piled up in Kai that season because they were feelings he tried to hide only for them to be released when he held all the power. Your comment about him being a "jealous whinny brat" is totally diminishing his great moments in the earlier seasons. Besides, he didn't have his parents from a very early age, which forces him to grow up in the world without guidance, and also causes him to be very protective of his younger sister. His actions and rage and temper are mostly to look out for Nya, and to prove himself worthy of something, because he himself didn't feel important. For example, when he lashed out at Wu, it was because of the kidnapping of Nya and the thought of not seeing her again; when Cole was beating him he grew very frustrated setting the monastery on fire, it was to prove to the rest he was worthy of the green suit; when all the other guys reached their full potential, Zane says [referring to Kai] "it appears his frustration is because he has not found inner peace." For all his flaws to be taken away, it makes him almost unrecognizable. For me old Kai will always be the better version, not to mention his older design is better and the quotes are on another level.
I feel like Kai isn’t the only character that has suffered from inconsistency For me it’s also kinda noticeable with loyd as he goes from a whiny brat to the green ninja wich is fine. In seasons 3 and 4 he practically leads the team the ninja become so use to him leading to the point that they practically have no idea what to do in s5 wen they don’t have him to lead them. Wen he comes back he goes back to being portrayed as the wise leader who knows everything and he gets accepted as there leader without question In s6 he arguably faces his gratest leadership challenge. Members of the team are going missing, other members are keeping secrets coff coff! Jay, wich if known might have prevented some of what happend wile he’s left to keep what’s left of the team from falling appart all without woo or misaco to help, cause we all know how usefull they are. And there’s also the slightly important fact that ninjago was quite literally falling appart Yet the ninja don’t question his leadership. But all off a sudden in hands of time Loyd is suddenly given a leadership problem wich is almost nothing like what he had to deal with in s6 the ninja suddenly start questioning him and he suddenly starts thinking oh no I can’t lead even though he basically has woo and misaco telling him what to do He didn’t have this problem before. Man I'm so glad I'm not the only one who noticed that like Kai improved! He was also always my least favorite I never thought he would be the green ninja or anything like that but if we still never had a green ninja I think he could be the green ninja in this season specifically if there was no Green Ninja. However, I still am a firm believer that Cole should have been the Green Ninja like if Lloyd didn't exist.

Also can we get a flashback before Ninjago ends of what Kai was actually going through when he awakened his True Potential in the volcano. The 'other ninja getting replaced' isn't true as those are just speculation, not even the show telling us that they will be replaced. Lloyd, Sora, Arin are main characters while others are side characters and still important to the show.

I have to agree, even though he is my fav ninja. Lloyd did seem like he just got everything randomly, so it took a few seasons to actually prove why he's the green ninja. Honestly, s8 was the season that proved he should be the green ninja, before that he was arrogant and stubborn. I still liked him then, but I like Lloyd now then I did back then And Crystalized Lloyd... We don't talk about Crystalized Lloyd.
I just see it as an internal deep jealousy that he knows isn't right and tries and does everything to keep it as deeply buried as possible within himself and Chen's staff brought out his deep bad side we all may feel jealous at times but try to shut that feeling because it's not right and regardless Kai still loved Lloyd and has an older brother relationship with him
I'm not going to lie, I disagree with Tanners complaints, if you look at it how it is which is that they are humans in the lego world well us humans hide our emotions to not hurt anyone especially since Lloyd was the chosen one and friend so the worse thing to do.and he never really was bratty, he was hot headed like a fire elemental should be, in Season 11 SOFS he wasn't jealous or bratty if you look at Lloyd when lost his powers and the others in season 5 they all struggled with no elemental powers plus Lloyd literally just gave up which is worse, Kai being the only one who cant do anything yeah he's going to feel annoyed that he is helpless. I also really like that kai was the first one to do the rising dragon technique, the "motion technique" and now with the summer sets being revealed, we see that the source dragon of motion is a fire dragon or at least a red dragon. (Sorry if my English is not that good)
I can buy Kai during Season 4 acting like that because even if he accepted he wasn't the Green Ninja he could still be jealous of all the fame and adulation that's gotten Lloyd. Season 11 didn't do this right at all. Honestly, this is why I'm so glad we got rid of Wu, is because now the Ninja HAD to step up and be the mature characters. Keeping Wu around as the mentor meant the writers felt like they had to keep them learning things, even if it was the same over and over.
Kai was always cool. Some people just have a prejudice against him, that's not warranted! lol. Some people call him arrogant, selfish, full of himself, etc, and it's just not true. Firstly, know what arrogant means before using it. It means thinking you are better than everyone else. Which Kai clearly does not. He's a ninja. He's honourable, and self sacrificing, and lives in service of others. Arrogant means people who don't care about others. Kai cares about others a great deal, especially his sister. He's not full of himself, he just has a healthy dose of self love, that is a good thing. His comments like 'so handsome' at his portrait etc were funny, and cute, not obnoxious. He may feel things like jealousy sometimes, normal human emotions, but he doesn't let it stop him from doing the right thing, ever, and that is what matters. Our choices, not how we might feel, or be conflicted, or be imperfect humans that can make mistakes. These are all messages for him in the show, but for some reason, people keep persisting in calling him these things. I think they just don't like his personality, and that's a personal thing, not a problem with his character. Like some fans hate Jay. I don't understand that either, and I could write a few paragraphs about that as well.... They did make Kai a little silly in the second installment, but so what? He was also genuinely funny! Come on, 'It should be someone disposable, like Jay.' and the little smirk, indicating he was joking, obviously. And 'Eat him first, he's filled with cake!' Those moments were gold. And humour is one of the most important things in the show, that when they leave it out, it just falls flat. My only beef with the show so far, is that unlike virtually every other character, they have yet to give Kai a really tear jerking moment. Even when they lost him in the nether space, the reaction was lame, other than Nya, and Wyldfire. Lloyd was bloody smiling after for goodness sake....annoyed the hell out of me. He needs his big emotional moments, to help endear the other people to him more. I honestly think that is the problem. People like the drama.

For me it’s also kinda noticeable with loyd as he goes from a whiny brat to the green ninja wich is fine. In seasons 3 and 4 he practically leads the team the ninja become so use to him leading to the point that they practically have no idea what to do in s5 wen they don’t have him to lead them.
Wen he comes back he goes back to being portrayed as the wise leader who knows everything and he gets accepted as there leader without question
In s6 he arguably faces his gratest leadership challenge. Members of the team are going missing, other members are keeping secrets coff coff! Jay, wich if known might have prevented some of what happend wile he’s left to keep what’s left of the team from falling appart all without woo or misaco to help, cause we all know how usefull they are. And there’s also the slightly important fact that ninjago was quite literally falling appart Yet the ninja don’t question his leadership. But all off a sudden in hands of time Loyd is suddenly given a leadership problem wich is almost nothing like what he had to deal with in s6 the ninja suddenly start questioning him and he suddenly starts thinking oh no I can’t lead even though he basically has woo and misaco telling him what to do He didn’t have this problem before. Why now

Man I'm so glad I'm not the only one who noticed that like Kai improved! He was also always my least favorite I never thought he would be the green ninja or anything like that but if we still never had a green ninja I think he could be the green ninja in this season specifically if there was no Green Ninja. However, I still am a firm believer that Cole should have been the Green Ninja like if Lloyd didn't exist.
Kais always been my favorite it really made me sad when Kai got reduced to secondary main characters replacing him with Lloyd, and don't get me wrong, i like Lloyd, but it seemed kinda messed up to do that to your Main Main Character it kinda reminds me of MMPR when they replaced the Red with White ranger as the leader and i know Kai was never technically the leader but when i was a kid it felt like it to me so i thought he actually was

5:03 I feel like saying that Kai having mastered being a master better than Loyd is a bit unfair for Loyd Kai is able to focus’ all his energy on training one student, whyldfire while Loyd has to train 2 students both of whoom have different capabilities and problems not to mention the fact that pretty much every decision he makes impacts the fait of all the relms like wen he wanted to make a stand to defend the cloud kingdom cause he didn’t want ras to get the scrolls to awaken the forbidden 5 not to mention the fact that every one including Kai is going to look to him for his big plan to save the relms. I have to agree, even though he is my fav ninja.
Lloyd did seem like he just got everything randomly, so it took a few seasons to actually prove why he's the green ninja. Honestly, s8 was the season that proved he should be the green ninja, before that he was arrogant and stubborn.

I just see it as an internal deep jealousy that he knows isn't right and tries and does everything to keep it as deeply buried as possible within himself and Chen's staff brought out his deep bad side we all may feel jealous at times but try to shut that feeling because it's not right and regardless Kai still loved Lloyd and has an older brother relationship with him

I'm not going to lie, I disagree with Tanners complaints, if you look at it how it is which is that they are humans in the lego world well us humans hide our emotions to not hurt anyone especially since Lloyd was the chosen one and friend so the worse thing to do.and he never really was bratty, he was hot headed like a fire elemental should be, in Season 11 SOFS he wasn't jealous or bratty if you look at Lloyd when lost his powers and the others in season 5 they all struggled with no elemental powers plus Lloyd literally just gave up which is worse, Kai being the only one who cant do anything yeah he's going to feel annoyed that he is helpless. Kai is the best in Dragons Rising by far but he wasn't as bad as Tanner makes out to be.
I also really like that kai was the first one to do the rising dragon technique, the "motion technique" and now with the summer sets being revealed, we see that the source dragon of motion is a fire dragon or at least a red dragon. (Sorry if my English is not that good)

I can buy Kai during Season 4 acting like that because even if he accepted he wasn't the Green Ninja he could still be jealous of all the fame and adulation that's gotten Lloyd. Season 11 didn't do this right at all.
Honestly, this is why I'm so glad we got rid of Wu, is because now the Ninja HAD to step up and be the mature characters. Keeping Wu around as the mentor meant the writers felt like they had to keep them learning things, even if it was the same over and over.

Kai was always cool. Some people just have a prejudice against him, that's not warranted! lol. Some people call him arrogant, selfish, full of himself, etc, and it's just not true. Firstly, know what arrogant means before using it. It means thinking you are better than everyone else. Which Kai clearly does not. He's a ninja. He's honourable, and self sacrificing, and lives in service of others. Arrogant means people who don't care about others. Kai cares about others a great deal, especially his sister. He's not full of himself, he just has a healthy dose of self love, that is a good thing. His comments like 'so handsome' at his portrait etc were funny, and cute, not obnoxious. He may feel things like jealousy sometimes, normal human emotions, but he doesn't let it stop him from doing the right thing, ever, and that is what matters. Our choices, not how we might feel, or be conflicted, or be imperfect humans that can make mistakes. These are all messages for him in the show, but for some reason, people keep persisting in calling him these things. I think they just don't like his personality, and that's a personal thing, not a problem with his character. Like some fans hate Jay. I don't understand that either, and I could write a few paragraphs about that as well....
They did make Kai a little silly in the second installment, but so what? He was also genuinely funny! Come on, 'It should be someone disposable, like Jay.' and the little smirk, indicating he was joking, obviously. And 'Eat him first, he's filled with cake!' Those moments were gold. And humour is one of the most important things in the show, that when they leave it out, it just falls flat. My only beef with the show so far, is that unlike virtually every other character, they have yet to give Kai a really tear jerking moment. Even when they lost him in the nether space, the reaction was lame, other than Nya, and Wyldfire. Lloyd was bloody smiling after for goodness sake....annoyed the hell out of me. He needs his big emotional moments, to help endear the other people to him more. I honestly think that is the problem. People like the drama.
