  • Warning this video is a little long. But it is a comprehensive video on how to use your 110 electrical fence charger with a DIY solar unit. It is not as complicated as it sounds. In the past few years Solar energy has become less and less hard for the DIY'er to install and use. Hope this helps someone out there that needs a solar solution to their electric fence issue. OMG! Gonna make this! We live in the high desert in NW Arizona. We are a completely off-grid Homestead. My question to you is, we are you not using ground poles. Thought you had to use them. Also, in your fencing strands, you had 3 hots and 2 grounds. Are the grounds just not electrified? So excited! Thank you, Sheri from Denpas Homestead

      Correct you do not need ground rods. This system is called a dual polarity system. When an animal touches two strands, one hot and one ground they get a direct shock. In our desert climate there is not enough moisture in the ground for the animal to ground out. So we connect the ground to one set of strand and the hot to the other. It actually works far better than the conventional way. I have other videos about this in the high tensile fence playlist.

    How big is your solar panel and what state are you in curious about the weather conditions and is your battery usually drawn down overnight by then inverter so I’ve got a 12 jewel AC charger I’d like to try out curious on how much power I need I’m in southeast Michigan we get a lot of cloudy days here. Great video though thanks for showing the stuff you make it look pretty easy to do.

      That particular panel was a 25 watt panel at 15 volts. That particular charger only pulled about 1.5 amps. If you divide the watts by volts you will get available amps. That number is the amount of amps it will take per hour to power that particular charger. So 25 watts divided by 15 volts = 1.6 amps that the panel is putting out. At least at optimum sun exposure. The 35 amp hour lead acid battery can only be discharged to half capacity, which is 17.5 amps or 17.5 amp hours that the battery will power the charger with no sun. If you can determine the wattage of your charger and work the formula you can determine how much of a panel and battery you will need. Ideally I like to use a deep cycle marine battery. If you have any other questions feel free to call me 928-245-6604

      @@HighDesertHomestead hey thanks for that in-depth information. Yeah I’ve got a 300 W panel. I’ve used a couple DC units but I’d like to plug-in a bigger AC charger because I got a lot more power. I’m gonna be charging a farm that’s going to have a lot of vegetation load yeah I’ll try to give you a call then maybe tomorrow or something so if you get a call from Michigan, you’ll know it’s me. Thanks a lot appreciate the help.

    How many 12volt batteries and how big a solar panel would you need for 120 mile electric fence charger? Also, thank you for this! My husband handled all the solar and electric and since he passed and we had to move it has been a hard learning curve.

      Really just one good deep cycle battery would work. And you can get by with a 750 watt inverter. Anything bigger than 100 watt solar panel and you really need a charger controller. Harbor freight has them for about $30. There are some good ones on Amazon as well. You can go with a bigger solar panel as long as you have a MPTT charge controller. It will allow you to basically over panel and only charge your battery at 12 volt.

    Is it correct that you cannot use earth ground through a grounding rod here unless the inverter's ground is also tied to earth ground? Is this why you ran the dual polarity system?

    • @HighDesertHomestead
      @HighDesertHomestead  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Either way it won't work because there is not enough moisture in the ground to maintain ground. On the desert the only way an electric fence works effectively is by running a dual polarity system.

    This was great, thank you! How is the system working almost a year later?

      A tip : you can watch series on Flixzone. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.

    Will the Arizona winds be able to blow away that battery box?

    • @HighDesertHomestead
      @HighDesertHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not likely, it has a battery in it and the fence leads run through the bottom of the box and are buried. Thanks for watching.

    It showed 12 volt on the box. Where did you buy the panel surge protector and the regulator? How much for those?

    Why not just get a DC charger and skip the inverter completely?

    • @HighDesertHomestead
      @HighDesertHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DC chargers do not carry enough joules to charge the larger pastures with multiple strands
