Who did this song originally? Wait, WHAT?! NO... SOMEONE MUST HAVE .. But -?!" It's just such a timeless, unique, absolute.. Quality song with the same everlasting lyrics... And no offense to Dispatch! But. It just seems soooo DIFFERENT from, well? Not just THEM, but different from just about ANYTHING- I think I'd be surprised no matter who sang this. ... unless it was like, something from the 1st half of the 20th century that someone took and did some kind of AMAZING cover with, and since it was originally written SO long ago, people thought it was super unique as well as NEW... you know?? (I'm SURE there are plenty of examples of tbis precise things being done but... I'm starving and can't think?! I was gonna go with Johnny Cash when he covered HURT by NIN, but. Only reason THAT one doesn't quite work is because the NIN original wasn't even that old?!) Still. I always think this song is so damn amazingly timeless & just... AMAZING?! That it MUST be a "classic" of some kind... It's silly, but. I always think/mean it as a genuine compliment to Dispatch & this song. Who knows? Maybe it's sorta like an Audio-version of the "Uncanny Valley" effect & how it's apparently engraved into our DNA to ALL be fearful of the same things like "gaunt, pale,, long limbed,.large heads, human-like but not QUITE right, sunken in black eyes..." and we're always afraid of " movie monsters" & such with these traits... I'm waiting for my damn mom to hurry up so I can get my beloved Ben & Jerry's Topped Chocolate Milk, & Cookies ice cream... YES for dinner, so whaaaat!?
This was my best friend and i's favorite song. We were two different people but this was where we drew the line that we each would hold. He passed away 3 years ago and every time I hear this, I just wish he could be here with me singing. You brought me closer to him than anything and I hope you can cherish how happy it made us because I would gladly trade my life to listen to this one more time with him

My best friend and I discover this song many many yeras ago. It began a love for this band that both of us would carry for all of our time. Even flying halfway across the country when the band reformed to see them live. . . He passed away from cancer recently, his family asked me to play a song at his funeral, they gave me choice of song saying "you know what he loved and would've wanted." This is the song I have chosen the story of a man who was willing to brave it alone and not burden anyone with his troubles. But his friends and family stayed with him and were by his side until the end. Nothing but acceptance and gratitude from him, realizing he was loved by all. Rest in Peace my friend you were our general. Dispatch you made our lives a little brighter with this masterpiece
Camp Takatoka anyone? Staff member 2018 and 2019! This is a song that we sing at every last night campfire and it's one of the campers and staff's favorite things we do during the week.
I first heard this song in college in 2006. My roommate invited me to go with him to a party and it was honestly pretty boring but towards the end of the night this song came on and he was just jamming to it in the backyard. One of those songs that just takes you to a different place.
I first heard this song played at the summer camp that I attended all throughout childhood and I just re-discovered the studio version. This song is truly incredible and unbelievably good
I listened to this for the first time when I was in high school, class of 06. It was during my hippy jam band phase. While I’ve grown out of that music, coming back to this after all those long years, it’s still such a great song.
It's a passive aggressive way to say that the "fight is not worth fighting" and I feel that it is the best antiwar song ever written. " Go now you are forgiven" fueled a lot of discussions around the campfire. Xoxoxo amy
There was a decorated General with a heart of gold That likened him to all the stories he told Of past battles won and lost And legends of old A seasoned veteran in his own time On the battlefield he gained respectful fame With many medals of bravery and stripes to his name He grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face And always urged his men on But on the eve of a great battle with the infantry in dream The Old General tossed in his sleep and wrestled with its meaning He awoke from the night to tell what he had seen And walked slowly out of his tent All the men held tall with their chests in the air With the courage in their blood and a fire in their stare And it was a gray morning and they all wondered how they would fare Till the old general told them to go home He said, "I have seen the others And I have discovered That this fight is not worth fighting And I've seen their mothers And I will no other to follow me where I'm going So Take a shower and shine your shoes You got no time to lose You are young men you must be living Take a shower and shine your shoes You got no time to lose You are young men you must be living Go now you are forgiven" But the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders Not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders The General said he would do his own duty but he would extend it no further The men can go as they pleased But not a man moved their eyes gazed straight ahead Till one by one they stepped back and not a word was said And the old general was left with his own words echoing in his head He then prepared to fight He said, "I have seen the others And I have discovered That this fight is not worth fighting No, And I've seen their mothers And I will no other to follow me where I'm going So take a shower and shine your shoes You got no time to lose You are young men you must be living Take a shower and shine your shoes You got no time to lose You are young men you must be living Go now you are forgiven" Go now you are forgiven Go now you are forgiven Go now you are forgiven, go Go now you are forgiven Go now you are forgiven Go now you are forgiven Go ooo oooooooo Go now you are forgiven Go now you are forgiven Go now you got to be, Got to be, got to be, got to be, Got to be yeaaaaa

Great song! You can tell the writer was a fan of Jimi Hendrix, there are so many similarities between this and Castles Made of Sand-the lyrical cadence as well as certain guitar phrases. It’s a beautiful homage
I just asked my mother what kind of music she likes. She said “i like music in general”. So I googled “general” and found this song. I was originally kidding but without her I wouldn’t have found this great song.
With an impending war in Eastern Europe, my thoughts wandered to this song. May those Russian soldiers come to a similar realization as this song and may peace follow soon after.
America and Russia have been working together to saw countries in half for a century. This is no different. They are turning the corpses of Slavs into money. That's it
I think of camp as well. The camp I work at is supposed to happen this year but I don't know if it will happen. Camp Takatoka best camp ever! I hope things get better.

My grandfather, during WWII, shot a Colonel in the head. The Colonel was trying to mount a counter offensive to German armor, using cavalry and hand grenades. The reason he did so was because the Colonel was shooting potential deserters in the head, he shot him from a distance, as he was an anti-armor sniper (disable the armor by shooting the driver through his viewing slot.) ...had he not, the men the Colonel had not shot, would have been cut down in their charge. My grandfather was not German, he was conscripted into the Polish army as a non-national (this was during the blitzkrieg.) I honestly believe that this song played a part in the reason why I left the army demurring training when I found out what my life expectancy was in a combat situation and, thus, one of the reasons I have the family I have now. Thank you.

war is never worth it... you have one life, why spend it fighting over ego? enjoy your life friends, drink beer, ride bikes, sail the ocean, enjoy the reality that you have, think think think do not waste your life as a puppet in some meaningless war live free and explore!
I dont have anything nearly as dramatic as the others, but back around 2012, i found soundcloud and this band, i was 10 at the time, i used to tie my dog to my razor scooter and have him pull me all around the neighborhood to songs like this, bang bang, railway, all those
Floris well they did but then they got back together to play at Madison square garden if I remember right and no ones really heard anything else past that to my knowledge so maybe they stuck together from there and are in the studio and maybe they just got back together for one last show but they haven't released a new album in forever
They made albums from the mid-90's until 2002 when they broke up to try solo careers. They played a "final show" in 2004 in Boston in the park. 160,000 people showed up. Also played a fundraising show in 2007 to raise money for Zimbabwe relief. They reformed in 2011, put out a new studio album (Circles Around the Sun) and a new live concert album (Ain't No Trip to Cleveland.... which is a brilliant live album). They did a "reunion" tour in 2011/2012 and another tour in 2013. Awesome tours. I saw both in Berkeley. They've been playing in Europe and at festivals all over. Also planning on doing another studio album. So happy they are playing again. They play their hearts out live. It is a privilege to see them and I thought I never would.
The General: "Take a shower and shine your shoes" Men: "Uhhh sir, we don't have showers" The General: "Ok, just shine your shoes then" Men: "We don't have that either..." The General: "Well just go jump in a river then"
The war between Russia and ukrain is awful but that’s not why I’m here. I see this song as a message to all young adults to be yourself and don’t be ashamed of it no matter what anyone else says. The worlds a scary place out there and the best way to navigate it is just be who you are :)

I know right
Any portion of the lyrics of this song slaps. And is so relatable to basically anyone listening.
There was a decorated General with a heart of gold
That likened him to all the stories he told
Of past battles won and lost
And legends of old
A seasoned veteran in his own time
On the battlefield he gained respectful fame
With many medals of bravery and stripes to his name
He grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face
And always urged his men on
But on the eve of a great battle with the infantry in dream
The Old General tossed in his sleep and wrestled with its meaning
He awoke from the night to tell what he had seen
And walked slowly out of his tent
All the men held tall with their chests in the air
With the courage in their blood and a fire in their stare
And it was a gray morning and they all wondered how they would fare
Till the old general told them to go home
He said, "I have seen the others
And I have discovered
That this fight is not worth fighting
And I've seen their mothers
And I will no other to follow me where I'm going
So
Take a shower and shine your shoes
You got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Take a shower and shine your shoes
You got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Go now you are forgiven"
But the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders
Not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders
The General said he would do his own duty but he would extend it no further
The men can go as they pleased
But not a man moved their eyes gazed straight ahead
Till one by one they stepped back and not a word was said
And the old general was left with his own words echoing in his head
He then prepared to fight
He said, "I have seen the others
And I have discovered
That this fight is not worth fighting
No, And I've seen their mothers
And I will no other to follow me where I'm going
So take a shower and shine your shoes
You got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Take a shower and shine your shoes
You got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Go now you are forgiven"
Go now you are forgiven
Go now you are forgiven
Go now you are forgiven, go
Go now you are forgiven
Go now you are forgiven
Go now you are forgiven
Go ooo oooooooo
Go now you are forgiven
Go now you are forgiven
Go now you got to be,
Got to be, got to be, got to be,
Got to be yeaaaaa
Thank you for taking the time

Definitely feel at least some of that, not so much the ladies room part but I get what your saying 😂
Best! 👍🏻👍🏻

war is never worth it...
you have one life, why spend it fighting over ego?
enjoy your life friends,
drink beer,
ride bikes,
sail the ocean,
enjoy the reality that you have,
think
think
think
do not waste your life as a puppet in some meaningless war
live free and explore!
Hooooooooovie ❤️simpler times.
❤❤❤
I dont have anything nearly as dramatic as the others, but back around 2012, i found soundcloud and this band, i was 10 at the time, i used to tie my dog to my razor scooter and have him pull me all around the neighborhood to songs like this, bang bang, railway, all those
Good stuff 👍
Christina from University of Florida 2003-2006 FSHN, from NM or NC, you out there? You introduced me to this band.
GO NOW YOU ARE FORGIVEN❤
This song might as well be 3000 years old. Holy shit...
I thought it was just an homage to Sublime, but goddamn, this was contemporary. Should this band have rose above?

Yo what's good
life when this song is on
One of the best bands of all time it's a shame they broke up
B-Box Bledsoe Did they?!
Rylie Hilscher it was at the hatch shell , it was a free show and the crowds blocked storrow drive , shut down traffic ... it was fucking beautiful
Jesse Skeffington I wish I could've been there
The General: "Take a shower and shine your shoes"
Men: "Uhhh sir, we don't have showers"
The General: "Ok, just shine your shoes then"
Men: "We don't have that either..."
The General: "Well just go jump in a river then"
He,s gone deeper than Section 8 Joe hey

The war between Russia and ukrain is awful but that’s not why I’m here. I see this song as a message to all young adults to be yourself and don’t be ashamed of it no matter what anyone else says. The worlds a scary place out there and the best way to navigate it is just be who you are :)
Thumbs down
Yo listen to this all you about to invade Gaza
Had a substitute teacher in middle school who used to bring his guitar in and sing to the class. He turned out to be a pedophile.
