Brings tears to my eyes as my mother law is passing, it weight is heavy on my heart. Only Duffy could write a song about a song, beautiful and so fitting for our present situation, God Bless the Memories of Duffy

Annie Ludia Jackson was the origin of the "Lydia" ghost story of Jamestown, NC. I believe the Country Gentlemen knew her 1st cousin Minnie Varner's grandson, Marshall... Curious why they used her sister's name...

A great sequel, like Marty Robbins' El Paso, answered by Feleena. Chilling. I'd never heard that until the 00's.

Fred Travers and I have discussed this song at length. We're both of the opinion that this was probably the last song that John wrote before his death. Kinda spooky and fitting...

Oh My!! What a chiller that this would be the last song he had written. A beautiful song & a beautiful soul who will always be missed.

If this song and Bringing Mary Home are loosely based on the famous "Lydia" ghost story, then they have a historical basis in fact. Annie Ludia Jackson was killed in a wreck on June 20th, 1920, though decidedly NOT a "little girl..." She had sister named Mary. I believe they ARE based on this, as John Duffy knew, and had made music with, Marshall Honeycutt, whose grandmother was the maternal first cousin of the woman killed...

From Wikipedia:Resurrection Mary is a well-known Chicago area ghost story of the "vanishing hitchhiker" type, a type of folklore that is known from many cultures. The urban legend is based outside of Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, Illinois, a few miles southwest of Chicago. Resurrection Mary is considered to be Chicago's most famous ghost. Since the 1930s, several men driving northeast along Archer Avenue between the Willowbrook Ballroom and Resurrection Cemetery have reported picking up a young female hitchhiker. This young woman is dressed somewhat formally in a white party dress and is said to have light blond hair and blue eyes.. . . she is very quiet. When the driver nears the Resurrection Cemetery, the young woman asks to be let out, whereupon she disappears into the cemetery. . . . The story goes that Mary had spent the evening dancing with a boyfriend at the Oh Henry Ballroom. At some point, they got into an argument and Mary stormed out.She left the ballroom and started walking up Archer Avenue. She had not gotten very far when she was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver, who fled the scene leaving Mary to die. Her parents found her and were grief-stricken at the sight of her dead body. They buried her in Resurrection Cemetery, wearing a beautiful white dancing dress and matching dancing shoes. The hit-and-run driver was never found.

A good ending for at least one vanishing hitchhiker story. I'm glad someone did a sequel. That song always scared me but now I feel better about it. You never know whats out there on those lonely roads at night whether good or evil. In this case it turned out good.

You know lots of people didn't think the Seldom Scene was Bluegrass. Seems stupid now.
