I can't describe how glad I am to find an accurate representation of belly dancing. The modern day belly dancers are mostly European white women who stole our culture and the dance got sexualized. These girls killed it, and they also wore the traditional Saidi Egyptian clothes. I love everything about this vid.

Thank you Fatemah Hatem for the nice & wise comment. It is one of the best I got so far. Actually this was a scene in a documentary about traditional ( Saidi) belly dance, but the Covid 19 pandemic has put the project on hold.

Had they donned the so called traditional belly dance costumes, they'd have been arrested in Upper Egypt. Been there. I know that's true. Edit: as an after thought no one in Egypt cares about the ancient culture or antiquities. That's just how it is.

yeeeess!!!! I'm from America, and the whole dance is has been so pornified. The women (it's always women) wear the most skimpy outfits they can find and make it 'Sexy Back'. As I understand it, the dance was a folk dance, done historically in village locations. It was a community event, not a strip club. Seeing how the people who created this style of folk dance didn't die out, that means there were children there. I don't think scantily clad women would have danced seductively for all the men in front of their young children...the folk dance is so much better than the west's sexy dance!

I have to say thank you so much for this video, I am from Africa, Mozambique is my country. Unfortunately I see a lot of miss representation about dances from Africa. This gives me a bit of faith. Everything now is so fusion that becomes confusion or is so sexualised that unfortunately the dances loses the purpose in the main stream because everything is about showbiz, and sell, and make money and not to show the culture (how it really is). Africans in my belief have to find a way to modernize yes but keep at the same time the aesthetics of the dance movements, the purpose, the culture and the background history. For that has to do with the teachers but also the performers. We have to be careful when we start to change so much the dances, especially when they are coming from folk or traditional concepts.

    • @AshrafEzzat

I just stumbled upon this video and I've been reading other comments about how they've finally found a bellydancing performance that is not sexualised...and I agree!
Belly dancing or raqs baladi has this bizarre reputation for being a sexualised dance...when it's not! and you can argue that a good belly dancer is one who can perform without the reinforced sexualisation that is witnessed in many contemporary belly dancing performances.
Referring also to the legendary styles of Samia Gamal, Tahia Karioka and even Kitty Foutsaki, although yes the dance can be sensual, yet they still maintained grace and dignity during their timeless performances.

This looks so fun in this context. I generally have only seen belly dance meant for the stage, like Kira Lebedeva or Yana Yamana, and they were obviously heavily modified for their audience as well. It's hard to find dances that are actually from Egypt, etc, when you don't know Arabic or Farsi because googling "Traditional Egyptian Belly Dance" just brings up random folks dancing "Traditional Egyptian Belly Dance". I guess the folks who post videos in English are usually folks who speak primarily English as well, which makes videos like this one rarer. There's a certain rustic simplicity to this video that has its own effects which are different from the modified versions for the stage. Thanks for posting!

I realise that what I have seen of belly dancing so far is apparently inauthentic and over sexualised, so thankyou very much for the education. My only sorrow is that I don't see many female faces in the audience. P.S I am really enjoying the music and singing too. I love the way the musicians are dancing too. The dance seems to be a visual interpretation of the music rather than a display to inspire sexual feelings.

This is in the style of Mahmoud Reda, and not what actual street dancers look like. It is prettified form the actual folkloric, which is not sexualized at all. Generally speaking, professional Egyptian dancers are not raunchy. Check out Randa Kamel or Aziza of Cairo for modern styles Soheir Zeki, Naima Akef and Nadia Galam for classics. There is so much to see...

I'm not one to knock on sexuality and sexy dance, but I really do appreciate seeing raqs sharqi for what it *actually* is as opposed to what it became thanks to orientalism. The dancers look like they're having a ton of fun, and the hand positions are very elegant! Delightful to watch and appreciate. ^^

@minalameey4366 It's quite surprising that most people don't know that Gypsies also have a huge presence in the Middle East and belly dancing is a dance associated with Egyptian Gypsies and not with the Arabs, Copts, Greeks and Berbers of Egypt.

@stellygamer1878 this is entirely constructed. This style of performance and the steps were pioneered by Mahmoud Reda - who wasn't Sa'idi- and this group are drawing on either his or the Firqat Kowmiyya's performances. The Kowmiyya dances were initially Russian-created.
Yes this is Egyptian folklore, not bellydance, and it's great and typical, but it's stage dance designed to represent certain characteristics and activities of the region, not the raw homestyle dancing that people here are fantasizing about.
