You do NOT need to drop engine/transaxle to replace waterpump on 2GR. Put it like this, Toyotas book time is roughly 2.5HRs to replace. Nor do you have to remove front end to replace alternator or A/C compressor. I work at a Toyota dealership and I need to correct these Misunderstandings lol. Unless you work for Toyota however, you would never know.

My second car is 1994 4Runner. Always dreamt about such old school SUV. And suddenly, in last December, I saw an ad, selling red 4Runner with - drums! - 86k miles. First hand. Belonged to an old couple, husband died in October, so the widow decided to sell in because their son didn't want the car calling it old junk - he drives 2019 Merc GLE. Hahaha! So, I took my mechanic and we went to look at the car. It is in such great condition, that make people salivate. After my mechanic approved the condition she named the price - 18k bucks. I wanted to bargain but my mechanic said I won't find a car in such good condition as it never was modified, stock car, with 3.0l turbodiesel. So, we made a deal. And I landed an awesome, just awesome car.

I have a 2006 Highlander with over 250k. Made $60k in one year in that car doing Uber/Lyft in the snow and all my maintenance myself 😀👍 To keep the car running I changed driveshaft (bearing near the hot Cat failed), all 4 wheel bearing, 2x timing belts (to be safe), sway bushings, 1 Fdrive axle, 4 brakes and rotors, 8 tires, radiator and thermostat (because I never changed R-fluid😳), valve gasket (and clean out carbon deposit on valve which caused pinging), 3rd set of spark plugs. Use inly Valvoline or Amsoil XL. Transfer Case and Transmission.
Amsoil, rear diff use Redline/modifer fluid (for better snow traction and reaction. No clunking that I had with Amsoil which too slipery) 😁👍
This New Highlander looks way harder to work on and my back won’t like it. Might do a new Bronco Diamond 4cyl w/ stick. Any suggestions?

Hi! Thank you for your detailed video on the Highlander. I have a question regarding my 2017 HL SE V6. I used to get 28.2 mpg on my highlander (99% highway driving). Since I changed the battery without memory save, my idle has been more rough and I’m getting a lot less mpg (25.5). I tried doing the idle relearn but it’s still not getting the mpgs I used to get. I heard that 2017 was when new engine for HL came out and Toyota didn’t initially set the computer piston valve firing correctly at first. Could I have reset the computer on my car that it lost some kind of correction to the firing? Thank you

i think Toyota hired a few BMW engineers and/or perhaps some BMW paper-pushers join the Toyota Highlander and RAV4 teams in 2018... Sad!

    • @matthewbowen5841

I agree because I like simple, rugged engineering, but just like everyone else in the industry, Toyota sees the death/mandated phase-out of these gasoline cars coming in the next 15 years. So they probably figure only a small amount will need that service before the end of their service lives. Most important thing I've learned from this guy's mechanical reviews are that manufacturers are designing toward quick retirement now, with the eventual replacement of the entire fleet with EVs planned within 2018+ vehicles' lifetimes.

We have a 2003 Highlander with a V6. It runs great and does not need repairs. But, to have the required timing belt, water pump, etc., with new factory parts done, was about $900. But, it will be many more years until needed again. (That''s about 2 car payments for a new car today, right?)

@@ToroMoto well, I think that you answered yourself your question. Historically they have been known to be very reliable and long lasting. Then goes the complicating factor that manufacturer changes design now and then and the new generation may develop issues down the road... There are other variables like: WHO was driving, WHERE, HOW - meaning what distances, was it warmed up on trips or not even got the chance to heat up before it was at the destination three miles away. Then how was it maintained, what oils and filters were used and if regularly and not too long between changes. Time will show.

I hate the windshield. Highlanders seem to come with ADAS standard and the bracket is this giant chunk of plastic, including a thin, delicate vane that sticks out almost two inches. The wiper park heating element is connected by a strangely chunky cable. All a big pain for those in the distribution industry. Otherwise, it seems like a solid vehicle.
