      I have never been that big a fan on Chrysler's. The only Chrysler I ever had was a Chrysler Newport and I bought it used. It was about 12 years old when I got it. I always wondered why Chrysler starters were so damned expensive! They always sounded like they're running like a bat out of hell and straining to turn the engine over

    What an ending....Eric O is a sadist...no doubt about it. It's almost as if the PCM was firing injectors and the coils presumably, to feed a 10,000 rpm engine! Flaky PCM, or flaky input to the PCM???
    Can't wait for part 2.

    MAN... ive been doing cars for 12 years now and i can pretty much hold my own working independents where im usually the only tech.. ive only once had a mentor who was as tech savvy and knowledgeable as this man.. unfortunately it was my first job at a dealership and i was not at all of the mind to be able to learn what he was showing me and maintain it.. i was still struggling with mounting tires lol.. oh how times change... after watching this video i realize i still have a lot of work to do and can be a lot more detailed in my diagnostics when some times i am not.. im still using Snapon Solus and really would like to make the move to the scan tool your using and learn to use it as you have shown in the video here.. very very good work!! i only know one man who works to this standard, he works for Dodge and is the #2 Tech in NY State. think one of only a handful to be certified by dodge to work on the Viper and other odd models like Hybrids they put out.. Prowler i believe needed certified techs to work on.. again, SWEEET video! best ive seen on you tube!! i request more in depth tutorials on the scan tool your using please

    Great ending!!! The suspense is thick in this one. Sounds like you let the magic smoke out of some electrical composent. Judging from the green trace (CMP sensor?), it was something on that circuit. That engine is a mystery. Looking forward to part 2.

    I may want to say thanks for this video! You have given me a direction to go in concerning my Liberty aka "The Jeep from H*ll" because of the issues that I've been having. Because you posted this up, I'm hoping the direction you gave me will ultimately get this hemorrhoid vehicle fixed! Oh and btw, the number 4 & 6 plugs are easier to get to with the overflow tank unbolted and moved to the side.

    Just going back and catching some of your older videos. This video was about the time we started having trouble with our 04 Liberty. About the same mileage also. Our lifters started losing oil pressure and making a clattering noise. Did the entire top end of the engine, new valves, lifters, guides, seats, everything. Lasted a two months and did it again. Never did figure out what was causing the lifters to lose oil pressure. Traded it in.

    Did you notice before you replaced the crank sensor it took several revolutions before the tach started ? I'll bet it took those extra revs for the software to "sync" with only the crank sensor.

    The CMP sensor signal went crazy as soon as it happened. Wonder if it is keeping the ASD powered and shorted CMP sensor taking out whatever coil it's synched to when it dies? It's the same 5V ref wire to the CKP so maybe one took the other one out? Just thinking out loud and can't wait to see what you found!

      +Hayward's Automotive :) You may be onto something....

    • @Clete88
      @Clete88 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Hayward's Automotive How could the shorted sensor tell the computer to supply continuous ground to a particular coil? I haven't seen the schematic on this, but I think this system is a ground supply, under PCM control.....sensors supply the inputs, yes, but ultimately, the command on signal for the coils comes from a ground supplied by the box, right?
      Ignition coils have duty cycles. They aren't designed to be turned on 100% of the time because they're not demanded to.....So.....Could this be a continuous on condition, or an exaggerated duty cycle for whatever reason overheating them?
      How do you mesh burned up coils with engine flooding?

    • @haywardsautomotive6156
      @haywardsautomotive6156 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Clete88 I don't want to steal Eric's suspense so as he diagnosis the problem it'll all make sense plus I just took a logical guess with what I seen & wrote up above. Just trying to figure out what caused the fuel odor Eric smelled, burned up coils, bad CKP sensor and the stalling after the CKP sensor, coils and plugs were changed. It started cold and after getting heat soaked it failed. Hopefully he won't keep us in suspense too long b/c that was a sizzling ending to Part I.

    • @bobmoy3406
      @bobmoy3406 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Hayward's Automotive Plus the fact that when Eric tried to start the engine the CMK signal was missing (Tach didn't jump) when he was cranking the engine. The engine only started after the cam signal was restored. Dr. O also determined that the PCM used a substituted CKP signal and that the CKP is really not needed to keep the engine running. So a bad CMK signal will cause the coil to keep on firing and also cause the injectors to keep firing, the reason for the strong gas odor. Let's hope that the CMK sensor or something related is the problem (bad wiring) and not the PCM or we can be looking past Part 2...lol

      +Phil Bourgeois Nah. Over the past 20 years I have owned 3 Jeep Grand Cherokees purchased new - 1994, 1999, and 2005. What I notice is that many owners of these vehicles maintain them like a 4 cylinder Honda - almost no maintenance. Then they blame the vehicle when it breaks down. If one keeps up the maintenance and repairs, which is very expensive, these vehicles are dependable and fun to drive.

    I had the same problem with a Ford F150 the coil driver would intermittently ground out. the truck had been at several shops and had 6 #3 coils replaced . The wire was chafed on the passenger side about 1 1/2 feet away from the PCM connector. I hope this helps. Check the powers and grounds @ the PCM and the battery pay attention to block and body grounds too. The PCM is protected by the PTC and will usually protect the drivers .

    I purchased my Liberty with 169,+++ miles on it, 2 of the cylinders were intermittently misfiring. the coils didn't look like yours, but when I started looking at things, it still had the oem plugs in it! and after replacing the plugs (funny enough, I put NGK plugs in it!) it still intermittently misfired. I just replaced all the coils. I figured that they were done in by having to jump the > .100" plug gaps. and since I don't particularly enjoy being stranded, it was a safer bet to replace all of them.

    You are doing a great Job Eric!!!!.....this Jepp has a huge collection of problems!!!! that have been acumulating over time!!!....In my opinion you are solving them in the correct order one step at the time!!!...(in common words needs an exorcism!!! and DrO is the best I know for that kind of Job). I dont think that sound at the end represents a short circuit, because the second time the car starts again!!!...when something electrical burns, its gone!!! my guess there are some faulty conections of some sort!!! About the burned coils I have a couple ideas that wanna share with you. There are 2 kinds of sparkplugs, older distributor cars sparkplugs, and modern ones!! The old kind among their characteristics has low electrical resistance (between 0 to 10 ohms at most). The modern ones has a electrical resistor built inside the porcelain in order to filter electrical noise into the electronic system (about 1 to 10 Kilo Ohms)!!! If someone use the wrong ones in modern cars could result in to a burned coil overtime!!!....the other idea is that nothing last forever, coils gets hot and cold everytime, and plastic and epoxy and the coil dielectric enamel gets dry and toasty and shorts the overall turns of the coil, and burns!!! Just needs high quality coils, and plugs!!! Good work Eric!!! I cant wait to see part two!!!...Keep up the good work!!!! :) :) :)

    Hey Eric, At @27:00 you said that you unplugged the cam sensor so the fuel pump and injectors wouldn't kick on during the crank sensor bypass test... why would that work? I usually pull the ASD relay to disable that stuff :)

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +motoYam82 Good question. I do not have an answer for, but I just observed with the cam sensor unplugged and you do a bypass test it will not turn on the fuel pump. The only reason I did it was because this engine had been soaked so much with gas previously I was just trying to prevent it a bit more. I know the bypass test turned on the fuel pump but I was not sure if it was firing coils or injectors to. Now that I think of it I do not think that it ill fire the drivers because these cars will not run on the CKP alone. However we did learn it will run on the CMP alone :) Just being cautious I guess haha, you know me safety 3rd!

  • @pedrolriveranegron5178
    @pedrolriveranegron5178 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    maybe too much current into the coil's primary side! or shut the Jeep off and took the key out of the ignition and keep the scanner hooked up to the computer, verify if the Jeep was trying to start on its own! There is an issues with crank or cam that the coils remain hot even when the car is off.

  • @charleskerr6485
    @charleskerr6485 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    OK, i'm halfway thru this vid and gotta throw in my 2 cents. Two wired coils are triggered directly by PCM. Dead short from primary to secondary winding (cracked or cracking body of the coil ) oozing insulating goop due a jump to ground or bad spark plug. The PCM is firing because of signal from bad CKP, or the CKP is bad due to a shorted CMP sharing an internal circuit from the PCM.
    Where's a ballast resistor when you need one.

  • @jasonmaloney4633
    @jasonmaloney4633 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    NGK ZFR6F-11G V-Power is actually the stock spark plug for this application. NGK makes a platinum variant as well (PZFR6F-11), but for some reason they no longer recommend it for direct replacement. Not sure if it's because of temperature or what.

    Interesting that the same circuits - injectors, coils, CPS work in the same circuits or inline with the wire diagrams that the coil shorting could have taken out the Crankshaft position sensor? All those ignition components are working simultaneously together.

    stated flooding engine and overheating coils. I'll bet your 2 quarts high on the stick.

    I know this is an older video but a thought on the key on coil fire - if the crank sensor was shorted and not working - to where the engine died, maybe - that happened when coil 4 was on the fire trigger in the ecm. That could possibly explain why the coil appeared energized when you were doing the key on charging. just a thought.

    Since we still don't know the answer, I'll throw this out there, I understand Eric gives a free set of tires on the the tough ones if you guess correctly:
    Intermittent issue.....get the engine running and do the shake tests on the wiring bundles....could a broken wire assist in sending bogus inputs to the ECM? I don't know how the Jeep PCM might respond to intermittent power or ground issues, but inside the computing parts, they have filter caps that could keep the CPU going....the driver circuitry however?? I don't know..
    Were we hearing a relay buzzing or were we hearing injectors? Remember, the motor was dead, so the formally quiet injectors operating could probably be heard much better since it was quiet....
    Do you carry Michelins Eric?

    Aw man! Did y'all hear that? Dr. O. said that he's human. I wonder if Vanessa knows that? And what the heck was that sound at the end? It sounded like it was something electrical. What a way to edit the video and make us tune in to Part 2.

    In regards to connecting the charger with the key on: I once connected a 20ish amp charger to a Ford Tempo with a dead battery while the headlight switch was on. The headlight bulbs flared on like flashbulbs and burned out. A couple of months ago my boss hooked up a 200 amp charger/starter to a Dodge Cummins while the key was on. We had to replace the PCM and a few days later the ECU had P0606 and had to be replaced. The Dodge might just be a coincidence though.

    My first thought was that the main relay was sticking on. But at the end of the video I'm not sure. know the coil was smoking with the KOEO. My next thought is the wiring harness is shorted?

    My commander uses ngk from the factory. However, if you get the wrong ones with too low of a resistor it will melt coils.

    What purpose does charging with the key on serve if any? The good thing is that you caught the melt down in action. That could've gone extremely bad.....oh no, now what. Damn, a cliffhanger! At least I don't have to wait for part 2 since I'm on a catch up binge. Thanks for the video.

    Here's an experiment that I've done before. Hook your scope up to your battery charger. Look at the waveform. Every charger I've ever checked has never had perfect dc current. That could be why you've heard people say not to turn the key on, although I've done it dozens of times without issue.

    In the Summer use 20W50 oil to protect the cylinders and engine. In the winter use 40 or 30 wt. Put antiseize on plug threads. Use silicone grease on plug wires.

      +Discretesignals I legitimately feel bad for them, because they try really hard, but they just have less money than everyone else. Therefore they have to cut corners that other brands don't, that result in random BS like this, that makes customer confidence in the brand sink further, which means they aren't making money. Vicious cycle.

    • @Discretesignals
      @Discretesignals 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ice44567 A few of the Jeep's slogans throughout the years:
      The toughest 4 letter word on wheels.
      Have Fun Out There
      Only in a Jeep
      Jeep. There's Only One
      Now those slogans make sense..haha

      Lol. The sad thing is I live in Toledo and pass the North Assembly plant every day on the way to work. These turds were all made here. I'm sorry that we unleashed these upon the innocent and unsuspecting (both consumers and guys like Eric who thought they understood car electronics pretty well) LOL

      +ice44567 Believe me, I'm sure Eric loves those little challenges. I live for them. Nothing like getting something like that and solving the case. Jeeps/Chrysler are not all bad. Thanks to Chrysler, GM, and the rest I wouldn't have been able to buy the house I live in or bought all the nice tools I have.

    You stated that in another video you had replaced the water pump on that Jeep. I was wondering if it got real hot and started the coils melting if it was losing coolant and then I watched the end of this video. Hmmm.
