  • In this video we take a look at a Jeep Liberty 3.7 that was purchased from an auction and then towed into the shop from a local dealer. You could get the engine to start on occasion but when you did it had a lot of mechanical engine noise and would not idle. Let's see what we find. -Enjoy!

    That Pico waveform was so cool! Awesome diag, Eric, would not have thought that a companion cylinder could affect the relative compression waveform like that...definitely learned something new :)

    What an excellent case study. I suspect many professionals would shrug and never explore it enough to find such compelling evidence. I was thinking it was going to be a timing issue, but then when I saw the spark coincident with TDC compression, I had to reconsider. Also I didn't jump at the most important finding, extremely HIGH torque to spin over those two cylinders. These are the problems that make auto repair so interesting.

(I decided to replace all 6) never had any other out of normal engine issues again. This whole situation in the video is avoidable by doing proper routine maintenance as the manual calls for.

    I've seen up to the diagnosis of the exhaust valve not opening, now I'm excited to see what it looks like mechanically - and if exhaust shooting out the intake during the valve overlap did any damage while it was running (which you can see with the steep drop after that second 150psi peak in pressure) - edit, you talked about this literally 5 seconds after I unpaused the video lol

    No mechanic where I live, would have ever come to that deduction without opening that engine up. As he often says, "sometimes you have to go slow, to go fast!" He stops, thinks, thinks again and proves his theories. Bam! Correct diagnosis! What was that 1 hour at most? Engines not all tore apart. 2 spark plugs removed and that's it. Oh hold on, phone is ringing. It's the 99.9% of the other shops calling to say, "dah! I've spent 4 hours on your vehicle sir, and i have no idea what's wrong?" "Do you want me to put a new engine in it for $7,000?" Lol

    Whenever Eric or Ivan does a video on a jeep, it reminds me of how todays manufacturers can take a fun to drive, easy to work on perfectly designed vehicle like the Willy's Jeep of WW2 vintage and turn it into a troublesome, constantly failing POS. I had the pleasure of driving around in one of the old olive drab open jeeps with 4wd independent suspension back in the service in 1968. The crap thats made by chrysler, Fiat today bears no resemblance in form or function to those great old OD jeeps. They should be ashamed of ruining an American CLASSIC.

    Nice video! Not knowing typical peak starter currents I would have suspected 4 low compression cylinders and been dead wrong. Your experience once again pays off. You could have, however, just pulled those 2 plugs and re-ran the relative current test. That might have sucked some crud into the cylinders but would have been just as definitive.

      When Champion was bought up along with ANCO and a gazillion other strong branded manufacturers, quality took a real hit. That was of course many moons ago in the early 90s. NGK and Bosch seemed to always be leaders in plug technology and overall quality.

    • @schigara
      @schigara 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was getting new plugs for my 2004 F150 5.4 3 valve which of course is an unusual plug and NGK does not make one for it. I brought my DVOM to the store to check resistance on the Motorcraft plugs and had to go through about 35 plugs to find 8 with an acceptable resistance. Most of them were very high in the 8-9,000 ohm range with a few up around 12,000ohms while a good plug resistance value should be around 4000ohms with 5000 being on the high side of the acceptable range.
      I have always used NGK's whenever possible and they have always been the best when it comes to quality control on their resistance. It's rare to find a new one with more than 4500ohm.
      I see why there are so many coil failures nowadays. People are putting in new plugs that have 8-12k ohms resistance and it's overheating the coils.

    Excellent call Mr O. An alternate way of proving your theory might have been to just remove one plug from a cylinder believed to have no exhaust valve. The relative compression test should now show one of the high current spikes now become normal.

Only thing that would have been better is if you could have drew a line on the screen showing what the normal waveform exhaust bump should look like. Awesome work Eric.

    I wonder if cars like Toyota and Honda have such good reputations because people who buy them take better care of them than people who buy American cars. I know Toyotas can have serious problems if oil changes are not kept up.

    • @JonBoy470
      @JonBoy470 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pook Atim Honda and Toyota sell very few cars to rental fleets, which buoys residual values throughout their lives. At the 8-10 year mark, when major things start to break, the Japanese cars are still very much worth fixing.

    • @pookatim
      @pookatim 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. But you know what would be interesting? A study where equal class and cost cars, Japanese and American are put to a long term test where both are equally abused and neglected and see which one prevails. Perhaps they could go three times the recommended oil change interval. Have no proper washing or waxing. It would be interesting to see which ended up more badly damaged as well as which has the most breakdowns and highest repair costs.

    Instead of doing the test with the pressure transducer it should be possible to verify by pulling the number 4 plug and running the cranking amps test again. Since the exhaust pressure will come out the spark plug hole you won't see the amp spike on the opposing cylinder. Of course the amp draw for cylinder 4 will be low but you would know to expect that.
