We did a round UK cruise a couple of years back and when we called in Edinburgh one of our fellow cruisers popped home and mowed his lawn!

Emma, I like your delivery and unbiased way of discussing different cruise lines and ships. Regarding the buffet, we took our grandson, then 11 now 31, on his first cruise on the Disney Wonder. My wife was telling him how the food and nearly everything else he was interested in was FREE. He looked at her and said, “Nana, it’s not free, it is INCLUDED”. At such a tender age he realized there is no free lunch.

Going to hot tub in gray windy rainy weather sounds like one of the most British things ever. And can definitely appreciate that as someone who grew up in a similar climate to the British Isles with Seattle.

Good on you Emma! You should be proud and fond of your own Countrymen. As an American, I'm reminded of the famous meeting between John Adams, the first American Ambassador to the UK, and King George III. The King had heard that Adams was not particularly attached to the manners of France. Adams said that was true and stated "I have no attachment but to my own Country". King George III then responded "An honest man will never have any other". That wonderful exchange between King George and John Adams did much to restore the friendship between our two countries.

I'm from the U.S. and I enjoyed my 2018 UK cruise so much that I booked the same trip in 2019. Edinburgh was a favorite so in 2019 I took an excursion bus there from Glasgow, just to get an extra day in the city. Cruising is "drive-by" tourism, which is frustrating when you want to spend more time in one place. The best part of cruising is that you take your hotel room with you (I hate packing).

The best part of cruising is being able to “taste test” countries before committing to a land vacation there. You can always book a land vacation later to the places you really liked on your ports of call.

6:01 You know what's funny about this - I come from Queensland, Australia, and for the people who _live_ here, all year round, 15 degrees celsius is also ideal sunbathing weather. Because you don't go out sunbathing when it's 30+ degrees outside, you'll cook yourself! We generally leave that for people from colder climes who want to sweat themselves into oblivion and then lie around indoors with heatstroke for two days. That's not intended as a criticism, btw - everyone who lives here has done that to themselves at least once intentionally, and often many times more by accident - but it's not something that is really much fun when you're going home afterwards to the _same_ 30+ degree heat that you were out cooking yourself in.
Spring and autumn are the best times for outdoor activities; not so hot that you're cooking yourself into tandoori every time you leave a building, and not cold enough that your body goes into winter-time hibernation mode because - nights still get down to 1 degree C sometimes, but it's not a cold enough climate for anybody to have proper winter insulation in their homes, so you _feel_ that cold.

Hi Emma. I love Princess and those beds are amazing and having a cabin exclusively to oneself even when travelling with a group allows for "me time". I think the US cruisers are missing so much by not having US coastal cruises because there is so much to see and learn about our own countries. Approaching and viewing any country by sea is magical but when it is your own it is just so special.

There are Princess Cruises that goes up and down the coast of California, all of the west coast, one that goes up and down the east coast, just New England, and one in Alaska. We live close to the coast of California and have done quite a few of the west coast cruises (and still had a ton of fun). Plus as an added bonus we drive to the pier where the cruises are and park our car there for the duration of the cruise!

We lived in Alaska and had the same wish! All the places we could get to by truck we had been. We have taken two cruises and it was totally worth it. We picked up a couple in Seward who lived in Juneau and had been to Anchorage for a big shopping trip. They used the cruise ship to carry all that stuff back to Juneau. Apparently it was quite a bit cheaper than other options, which was brilliant!

Took the same cruise on Ruby Princess in 2014. Would not do it again. Some of it was nice. Like Cobh and especially liked Kirkwall. We also did it in mid May and it was cold most of the time. Really could not enjoy the outside decks because of the cold. We were asked to change our cabin at the last minute in exchange of a limit view with a discount. Nothing really wrong with limited view but cabin was so small it as even hard to get into the bed. The excursions were very expensive. We did not go on many because of the expense. We preferred to just get off and wander around on our own. We went on a river cruise a few years before and it was so much better. First on a river cruise you can wander all over the ship. You can stand on the bow or the stern and watch the water go by. On the Ruby Princess of the bow is the expensive state rooms or the bridge and control areas and the stern isn't much better. On the river the cruise a lot during the day and are in port at night so you can just sit on the deck and chill and watch the world go by. On a cruise ship they are in moving at night. Sorry to get so wordy but are going on cruise this far north do it during August.

Whether it be drydock or cruising, I've never had a bad experience that soured the fact I was on a ship. All the lines we worked for were great in my opinion. We took our meals at staff mess and the food was excellent. We were not allowed in guest areas after hours while cruising but found the crew bar more than sufficient in the evenings I would say that it is a toss-up between RCI and Princess as to who had the better crew..

I mean you can't get sitting at any of the bars and cafés. This is what puts me off going round the British Isles. That’s because barmen in Britain don’t pour it properly. I’m Irish, and I’ve never managed to find a decent pint of Guinness across the Irish Sea. It’s supposed to be poured in 2 stages, but they never seem to do that over there.

I had lots of smiles during this video.
    1. As you were talking about not visiting your home island, I was thinking about inviting you to join us on a narrowboat. It would be hilarious for this pair of Kansans to meet you at a Back Princes narrowboat base and toodle around at 4 mph for a week. We've done it five times. NOT a cruise ship cruise for sure.
    2. As you talked about expecting just OLD Brits on the ship, I was thinking that you need to go on a Hebredian Princess cruise. That WILL be mostly OLD brits with some OLD people from elsewhere thrown in just because. That said you will visit places in Scotland and Ireland that you won't likely get to any other way. Care to watch puffins nesting? Or take a distillery tour on Islay? Those two might occur in the same day with a great lunch in between. Even your "cheap" inside cabin on HP would be more expensive than a nice suite on Royal Princess.
    3. We've enjoyed a couple of cruises on Royal. One of those was a Transatlantic that terminated in Southampton. [From there we went narrowboating. :-) ]
    Again, Thanks,
    David

I would love to go on the Hebridean Princess, however, the cost of even the cheapest single cabin is way out of my price range. I could do about 3 American Queen Steamboat Mississippi River cruises for that amount of money & they are on the pricey side.

I DO like Guinness! I also like dark beer in general, which might be a factor in the liking. If it's the bitterness that gets you, try a Murphy's Oatmeal Stout. Of course, if you prefer a Pepsi, that might not be enough.60 degrees F is shorts weather for us New Englanders, so I'd sunbathe, too. I've had mixed feelings about autumn New England cruises for some of the same reasons you mention for British Isles cruises, too. Boston and Portland Maine are regular visiting for me, but the Canadian destinations are less usual. Maybe I should try one? Great things to think about in this vlog! Thank you!

Did a Mexican Riviera cruise on Royal Princess in February 2020 just before the lockdowns, it's a very nice ship but Sapphire Princess (which is a bit of an oddball, being one of the two Mitsubishi built ships in the Princess fleet) is probably my favorite I've been on. British Isles is high on my list of cruises I want to do, but my wife really wants to do a land trip to Italy before we would be able to do one.

I have done that one with Princess and it’s really good actually. The port is in Long Beach and it’s a 6 hour drive for us (we live in Phoenix). You go up and down the coast of California for 7 days with a stop in Ensenada. There are other shorter ones that stop in Avalon and Ensenada or San Diego and Ensenada. We’ve done those too and they are good as well. For me, those types of cruises feel both different and familiar at the same time.
