I kept waiting for a-ha to turn up, but they never did. Well played, Mojo.
Any band that managed to convince TOTP producers that they should sing and play live are worthy of a mention... not many did
Nirvana barely managed it. They look him sing live and the musicians had to mime - look how that turned out.
Eternal singing ‘I wanna be the only one’ live with a gospel spin stands out - in the nineties UK girl groups were questionable vocalists
Did Iron Maiden do it ? Or did they refuse to do it because they could not play live, I can not remember
Maiden did Running Free live 🙂👍
It's all down to the time period. During the era when Chris Cowie produced anyone could perform totally live or indeed totally mime depending on their choice
Japan and David Sylvian just awesome
Love 'Break it Down Again'! And is that Gail Ann Dorsey?
Kate Bush is incredible pure talent!
Loved TOTP/TOTP2 so really appreciate this video. I know it would be hard work for the uploader and perhaps too long a set for some BUT, I for one would actually REALLY LOVE to see ALL of these performances in FULL. Just putting it out there as I'm sure it would be MAGIC to see! x
Brilliant Blur from their brilliant 1999 album "13".
I would also add Bjork & Skunk Anansi's duet of Army Of Me back in '95 too - transforming Bjork's gloomy techno song into a full-on screaming metal tune was a classic TOTP moment.
I consider Crazy performed live by Gnarls Barkley at a much slower tempo to be one of the best live performances on TOTP. Much better than the recorded version
You tricked me with the a-ha intro.
Tears for fears so underrated
They're incredible
Never underated in UK ! Definitely loved! Always and even tho Kurt had left it that point " break it down again" is amazing an amazing tune!! I
Thanks for the shout out to our Canadian band barenaked ladies
One of the best live performances in my opinion, also my favourite song .. Tears For Fears - The Working Hour (Live). Instrumental intro/ Roland's voice / Audience captivated/ Enough said. :)
It's great to see a sarcastic Welsh twang make it onto this list. Catatonias International Velvet was required listening when I was at Cardiff (Mulder and Scully top track) and Cerys Matthews just absolutely smashed the vocals. Superb artist and a great lady
I have a soft spot for The Wildhearts' performance of Caffeine Bomb.
For years that performance stuck in my head but I didn't actually know who it was until decades later when I became a fan.
I’d add Manic Street Preachers doing Faster to the mix for the sheer insanity, so many people complained!
11:36 there was an excellent performance of ‘Landslide’ by The Dixie Chicks around 2001/2002 I believe. That was a really underrated performance.
Kate Bush her voice is so evocative. .genius ☺
Bowie singing Jean genie live should be number 1
In all honesty i can remember this bowie masterpiece......Yes i witnessed the perfect Bowie in his heyday here.
Only Tears for Fears are live here. Superb live and the greatest live TFF song is Working hour. Sylvian sang to the limits of his vocal chords
Sylvian was in Japan. TFF were Roland Orzabal and Kurt Smith
ignore me - just seen Ghosts
TFF aren’t playing their instruments live. There are no guitar amps or microphones on the drums.
all the 90s performances are live here, at least vocals
Great to have Blur at number one.
I think the main issue with TOTP over the years was not if the songs were played live or not, but if they were played full length or (mostly) not.
Killer is such a great track
Heck yeah
Re-released by Seal in its own right, reaching No.9;as Adamski refused to split the revenue on its original No.1 hit release with Seal ! 🙄
Anyone love smells like teen spirit on totp? I saw it at the time and thought it was brilliant!
Legendary moment
That appearance of Kate Bush singing Babooshka wasn't on TOTP. It was a guest appearance on a Dr Hook TV Special.
Killing Joke's Millennium in 1994 is one of the first that come to mind
I like that Damon Albarn is wearing sunglasses, almost as if he's trying to disguise his sadness.
he was probably hungover
walk on by - the stranglers
my favourite totp performance
Faith no more's "ashes to ashes"......ditto, Watchmojo, ditto🤘
❤ Blur
You completely missed that FNM performing Ashes to Ashes doesn't have Mike Bordin on drums, he was on tour with Ozzy Osbourne. Robin Guy of Rachel Stamp was drafted in for the show, and apparently was supposed to wear a mask of Bordin's face, he didn't, and throughout the performance, Mike Patton gives him his middle finger several times.
It's a bit strange this one, particularly when you consider the fact that nesrly all artists who are invited to be on Top of the Pops aren't actually playing live.
It's all lip-synching with the relevant song playing over the speakers.
Most of these listed are from later in the show's life where they played live
Depends on the time period. 70s, sing live to a rerecord track with the totp orchestra, 80s, mime, 90s live vocals to backing track, mid 90s totally live or totally mime depending on your tastes
Blur are awesome. Tender is such a beautiful track, I don't even care about the runtime.
Tender is compete horseshit.
Filter's performance in totp 2000 on the song Take a picture should have been in this list too that was epic
I am sorry, but there is no way in hell that Depeche Mode performance is live. So we are basically adding lip syncs into the Top 10 and calling that a great performance...?!
Return of the mack!!
Most of bands tried to perform live in TOTP in 90s.
Go DMode!!!! :)
The video title had me perplexed. I wondered how or who deemed these underrated! As it happens there's a load of dross in there...and then there's Kate Bush.
Tender wasn't written about his relationship, No Distance Left to Run Was
Check out Howard Jones playing HIDE AND SEEK, live and solo.
Great performances, shame we couldn't hear any of them!! as someone was blabbering throughout the song!!
Tears for fears only one of the members on stage so not them but him
'withering' heights hahaha
Return of the mack!!! Really
Where's Sophie George?
👏👏👏👏
Keep them where they are
Why does it look like Noel Gallagher as copied Damon’s look from this
Ah, Mojo, talk over exactly what you try to describe
fair use
kate bush makes me want to pull my ears off.
I like that one she did with Peter Gabriel, but I'll pass on the rest
This channel would be a lot better if we could actually hear more than a few seconds of a song at a time rather than talking over everything
Nobody says TOTP
Bnl for ever
Top of the populists
Somehow I expected to see some classic stuff from the 70s. Kinda disappointed except Tears for Fears...
Depeche mode was NOT live no mic in sight
no suede😭
Damon......GOAT........
Where's Smiley Culture?
Jamiroquai?? 🤷♂️
Blur (and Oasis for that matter) where utter shite.
Nah.
@@Monkeypole yah.
BABOOSHKA
shame the commentator talked over literally 90% of the tracks?? pointless video
Blur over the Manics or Suede or countless others 🙄, lame tbh. You should have doubled down and made Coldplay number one. Personally, I would've had someone like Stereo MCs on the list, along with We Are The Pigs and maybe La Tristesse Durera. They were great on totp.
legit. when they said underrated i straight away thought of metal mickey performance
Does this guy talk like this at home?
Really terrible list.
Tender is one of the worst songs Blur have released.
I think i'm going to puke
@@rayosullivan4398 Yes that's how I feel when I hear that song as well.
so you go and ruin them by talking all over them!
Kate Bush Is NOT performing 'live', She's miming. She's not even using a micrphone for christs sake!
Mark Morrison is miming to. And if it's 'live', where is the band?
Depeche Mode ain't playing 'live' either. There's no mic on the snare drum.
Depeche mode were miming. There were no mics. Take it off the list it's not milli vanilli
I give up now. I watched them all. None of them are playing 'live'. Watch Mojo should be ashamed. Click, click, click.
It in't Tears For Fears on stage. It ain't 'them''. Curt Smith isn't there.
