I love how Sasha is just so comfortable on skates as if she's walking on normal ground. And she's always watching out for the other girl to not fall. So sweet.

Awwwww I'm a figure skater but can't skate right now due to an injury and watching this just brightens my day!
In my first time skating, my dad hired me an assistant coach and she taught me how to skate. But since I've been doing it for 2 times already, I started liking it and have been begging my parents to let me take figure skating lessons for almost like 2-3 months. And they won't let me! Because they don't think I'm for this kind of sport.....

I only recently started ice skating, im 13 never wore or used rollerskates and ice skating was actually pretty good.

I have a video of my 2nd time on ice, a couple days after my first lesson. I was working very hard to achieve forward and back swizzles, and I'm pretty sure I couldn't have done a one-foot glide.

I'm 20 years old, and I'm wondering if I can still learn to be a figure skater. I'm worried that the only people who can be professionals are the ones who started learning from a young age (i.e. 13 years old). If I start now, can I still become a professional figure skater?
Most professionals start from 3-5 years old. I started when I was 11, but I still cannot do an axel. (I have had 30 lessons, 30mins each,)
pros.start when they are 2-3 years old. If you really love it then go for it!
u can, but professional skaters retire when theyre around 25 yrs old
You could be a show skater if you're really dedicated, and double jumps are achievable, but I wouldn't get too hopeful for triples, or going into international competitions, but there is still hope! If you're really dedicated and you really love it, then just try. There are people at my rink who are just starting and they are 50, so it's never too late to start. If you love it, go for it.
I know this was an old comment, but I just wanted to add on. You can still learn to skate and even compete in competitions, just competitions specifically for adult figure skaters. Google "USFSA adult figure skating" to find some more info. I'd recommend also checking out ice dancing because I think it can be a bit easier to pick up for skaters older than the typical figure skater since there's no jumps.
I started at 13, been doing it for a year and a bit and am already competing, never too late to start..Go for it!
I used to do compettitive figure skating for 6 yrs. It was alot of fun and hardwork!!! I still remeber doing these basics when I was alot younger :)
My sister was obsessed with her when she was younger, since she used to figure skate. She even met her on an airplane and got her autograph!!

Trivia update; Sasha Cohen is now known as Mrs.Alexandra May, a 32-year old college student. After retiring from skating 3 years ago(She said "Life as a young athlete was one dimensional") she started going to college, she started dating and got married in 2016. She now wants to be addressed by her actual first name "Alexandra". "May" is her married name.

I'm not good at roller skating but good at ice skating I know it's tough at first try but your practising ! It doesn't matter try you best!
Ok, I know u guys probably don't do this, but I'm Swedish and there is not a Swedish kid that isn't forced on the ice each pe class during winter! But you should always, unless you're competing, wear a helmet! Especially if you're a beginner! It may look silly but the ice is really hard and it's so easy to fall and hit your head!

I'm a figure skater and I teach levels 1-4 in skating and for a second time skating she's actually really good...most people cant even move for the first few weeks even if it is an adult trying to skate.
Don't worry that's exactly how I started to do a waltz jump. But I'm better now.

+Comedycouture okay what?!?! not seem rude but that is crazy! I've been skating for eight years now I only just landed my axel jump and camel to spit spin! But it does depend how many hours you practice a week. Lessons are expensive. If you practice nearly everyday for several hours, I guess thats reasonable.
i use to practice figure skating by myself but them i stopped for a year, let's get back practicing!

Omg... Sasha Cohen... BEAST.
The skate blade has 2 sharp edges (inside and outside). You dig one of these edges into the ice just enough to "shave" the top layer of ice off. The "shaving" creates enough friction to stop.

i luved to skate but do to a bad fall on the ice about 3 years ago i have fears of the ice i went last year on a open skate night and sprained my ankle that i had just recovered for a broken growth plate and have now broken it 2 more times and in a boot now. this made me think that i am going to sign up for lessons when i get better

Skaters can't "spot" like dancers can because of the speed. You learn to un-focus your gaze. Also helps when you come out to look at something stationary as you skate on in the program (the wall, the boards, ect) to regain your equilibrium. Every skater ends up with their own technique and the dizziness actually goes away very quickly.

She says she's a little dizzy, but normally to not get too dizzy, you want to center your spin, which is probably the hardest part of learning a spin. Haha. And centering is just staying in one place throughout the spin.
Thanks, Julianaqtpi. It just increases my already great respect for skaters such as yourself. To be able to maintain the subtlety, grace and beauty of a skating routine while you are dizzy is amazing to me. I wish you great success and happiness in your skating.
