i was there in the ship war. I was at the Zutara team, and im kinda sad katara ended up with aang, but i'm not super pissed...
Zutara was supposed the be canon- even the voice actors thought it would happen. Idk what went wrong, or what changed, but we know what happened. Even Katara and Zuko's voice actors ship Zutara!
Zuko and honor is the only acceptable ship, change my mind.

As a kid I never noticed the chemistry between Katara and Zuko. As a teenager, about the same age as the characters, and thinking about the scenes you mentioned, my mind is going *”Ohhhhh... yeah they screwed up”*
I KNOW!! I never watched atla as a kid, however I always knew that Aang ended up with Katara, but when I FINALLY watched it recently I couldn’t help but ship Zuko and Katara together even with this knowledge. And to put it very lightly, they screwed up BIG TIME.

Dang, I didn't know the fandom (and the writing) was so messy :o
As a kid I didn't like any of the romance in the show because 'eww they're kissing', but now I'm like 'yea no the romance is actually bad'. There is just so much hinted or even canon romance that makes no sense and/or has no fundament whatsoever, and the times when you think there could actually be some blooming romance it isn't followed through.
Like, literally one of my biggest gripes with this show is the Kataang romance because it is so obviously not there, yet it is presented as beeing a driving force in Aang's arc in book 3 especially. Like you said, Katara does not display any romantic feelings for Aang, instead being a very motherly sister-like figure. Aang on the other hand goes from having a schoolyard crush (which was fine imo) to being straight out obsessive and possessive over Katara in the last book. Which makes sense in a way, because she becomes the anchor that he clings to as he struggles with his responsibilities as well as his feelings, and if course he loves her, but I don't think he has strong romantic feelings for her the way he believes he does. In any case, them being a couple just seems incredibly forced and, the way it is in season 3, not particularly healthy. I do however like the idea of them being together as adults, I think that once they have both grown up some (Aang especially) and had a chance to digest and cope with all that had happened they'd work quite nicely as a couple.
And while I don't exactly ship Zutara either (Im just not an avid shipper in general :'D), I think that them being a couple towards the end of the series, even if perhaps not permanent, would have made a lot more sense. They have a lot in common in both their personalities and in what they have gone through and it's clear that they have a sort of mutal understanding That Katara and Aang lack. Plus, let's be real, age does matter (let alone the fact that Aang is mentally a lot younger still than Katara).

I love Zutara. I didn't like the way when Korra aired, they way the original cast was treated. Like once they all they had children they just changed and just forgot each other. Also can we send you links to Zutara fanfictions to you?

I ship this so hard!! And I agree with you on the part about not shipping them because she can “change him”. I think in arc three is where their chemistry really hits home. So many times ive seen Zuko jump in front of Azula’s lightning and literally cried at the aftermath of it because that is a moment that shouldve brought them even closer but it didnt 😟😢

Man, this makes me want to rewatch ATLA. I was obsessed with the show during its run and throughout Korra, but the ship wars... oh lord, the ship wars. I was for Kataang but because I was a kid I was following the older, cooler adults’ POVs, it didn’t really strike me how badly Bryke fucked with the Zutara fanbase until I myself was older. Like that mocking Zutara video of FANS’ art? That’s some trumped up fuckery right there, gonna get a yikes from me dog. Kataang v. Zutara was still alive and well on tumblr during Korra’s air, so there’s more recent examples of the rampant online drama that ran afoot, but it’s all a mess regardless.
Now that I’m older, I just question why people took fictional ships so damn personally that they were outwardly cruel and demeaning to folks who didn’t think like them. That includes Bryke team. Fact still applies today for contemporary ships, but ATLA /LOK fandom really defined “ship wars,” and that shit went beyond nasty.
KATARA DESERVED BETTER THO IN KORRA LORD. I liked Korra for what it was but GOD so many aspects of it were underwhelming, especially in respect to shipping and poor Katara’s treatment. Like you, I found respite in fics where older Kataang actually DEALT with their issues and Katara called Aang tf out on his bullshit. She also was heavily involved in the White Lotus and building Republic City and.... shit I’m still bitter why wasn’t that canon?? Either way, thank the lord for fanfiction to resolve this mess.
God the baiting battles in this show sound even worse than what happened to the Voltron remake, the person/people in charge ignoring warnings, and the fandom itself becoming toxic and taking that anger out on people who didn’t deserve it. It just proves how much it was the creators more than the fans in how those same fans are much more kind when switched over to she ra
Yeeesh voltron got bad... I love the characters, animation, and most of the plot, but I HATE how the creators and fandom dealt with the ships. With she-ra I've basically avoided all fandom interaction because I really don't want to risk dealing with anything like that again.

Blame Bryke for the comics and Korra. The original writers, like Aaron Ehaz and his wife (they were the ones jockeying for Zutara and actually wrote the characters the way we know them; Bryke did not) were not present for those monstrosities.
I think it's funny that some people think Zutara is promoting a 'she can fix him' thing, but with Kataang it's kind of the same way since Katara is the only one who manages to calm Aang down from his avatar-mode outburst things.
As someone who has been a fan of the series since childhood, I never got the whole criticism of 'toxic relationship' or 'she can fix him dynamic' for Zutara.
Season 3 (halfway onward) Zuko is not toxic, hello been watching his arc?

This video makes me so happy. I grew up with Avatar TLA, so I'm very passionate about Zutara, and how most of the ships in Avatar felt super clunky and just... weird. I didn't watch it while it was airing, more when I turned like... 15 or so, so I didn't know a lot about the Writers which is really interesting to me. The only canon ship I'm okay with is Suki and Sokka, but we all know how that turned out. The show heavily implied that Zutara would be a thing, and as much as I absolutely love the show, I always find myself incredibly disappointed in how it ended. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere online (don't know the credibility to this statement, so take it with caution) that Aaron Ehasz wanted Zutara to be canon/endgame if they were to make a Season 4, but Bryan and I believe Micheal were against it and a Season 4 never happened. This ship just has so many dynamics that would have been a lot healthier in my opinion than Kataang or Maiko. Just sucks that the shipping guess games became so insanely chaotic that it stole from the actual character development, plots, and relationships in the show.
Big agree on every single word. :) I didn't participate in the fandom (apparently this was a good thing lol) but I remember watching the show as it aired and being very SURE that Zutara was gonna happen and then..... :( still amazing finale but blech lol gorgeous art though!!!!! beautiful colors and the backgrounds aaaaaaaaaaaaa I did like Korra (though it was VERY messy especially season 1 and whatever the heck season 2 was) but yeah they did Katara dirty. I love her so much and gjfkk why. She is best. Just best everything.
The whole time watching this show I thought how Aang and Katara were such a good couple and watching it again I honestly think it would have been better if Zuko and Katara were together, atleast for I little.

Also no it’s not promoting a “she can fix him narrative” like Zuko chose to change himself cause he realizes that the stuff he wanted before isn’t wanted now. Also Platonic Zuko and Katara is amazing and they should be more why did we not have more? Also we just generally need more friendships in stories we don’t always want half-baked romance or even amazing romance we love our friendships please give us more. Edit 2. Ribotto Studios like I would not mind him being single heck, it might be in his best interest for a awhile since he still needs to deal with his trauma. I wouldn’t mind if all the characters stayed single even if for awhile or even for Aang and Katara break up and the group trying to handle it.
@@holly3330 to me shipping wars just never made any sense and it's fun seeing people go ballistic and MY GOD did people go ballistic over Kataang vs Zutara and to me it was just dumb even back in the day lol. Yeah to me it just makes logical sense Zuko would be single for a large portion of his life. With his baggage it makes sense, and yeah I think if they had had a 4th season, maybe they would've touched on that.
Ribotto Studios yeah Zuko should of stayed single for awhile maybe for around 5 to 10 years or so he can barely handle himself. Though it would of been interesting to see them tackle breakups in a friend group since that would get messy and also make the group consider things and such.

GOD THANK YOU SO MUCH you hit every point on this topic! zutara wasn't super on my radar until after the show and seeing fan discussion since i didnt watch avatar when it originally aired, but it just makes so much more sense than kataang. 12 year old wanting to date their babysitter is exactly how i'd describe that relationship as well. (although i enjoy zuko/sokka a bit too much to be all OTP and basically every girl in fiction i like who ends up in a shitty pairing im like: god someone get her a girllfriend dgldskagj) so i would also be really into epic wlw / mlm solidarity ride or die besties for zuko and katara since my traumatized gay ass relates to both of them so hard askglkdng. or also just not having any endgame pairs would have been preferable to what we got. i do wonder about the book 4 thing bc i wouldnt have minded the writers exploring why kataang are not good for eachother and breaking up, like two teens getting into a pointless relationship and figuring out its not what they want is way more believable than them staying together and ruining eachother's lives.

I don’t ship these two, but I do love this show with my whole heart! Zuko is by far one of my favorite characters of all time. His redemption arc was gold
This ship still burns in my soul to this day. It’s been over a decade it shows no sign of stopping. It’s up there with classic timeless ships like Spirk.
And yeah, the “she can fix him” angle is so bad. I don’t see that as an aspect of their relationship, thankfully. They have their own growth arcs. And I definitely wouldn’t want either of them to change “for love” but through their own introspective growth. So yeah. All the points you made, plus the plethora of others made from the inception of this ship.
And yes, Mai and Zuko do not make a good couple. They aren’t compatible as a couple. They have a very unhealthy relationship.
And it bothers me that quite a few people think that the relationship dynamic between Aang and Katara, that Katara picks ups after Aang’s mess is good because someone in the relationship needs to fill that role makes me nauseous and angry. That is not a healthy dynamic. Both parties need to be able to rely on each other and lift each other up. That one-sided type of dynamic becomes a bigger and bigger issue as time goes on. And yeah, ugh the confirmation of how Katara’s life panned out in Legend of Korra fills me with so much frustration and sadness. She, in my opinion, was both his mother and personal baby maker for the rest of his life. Even their kids suffered because of Aang’s inability to foster a good relationship with his wife and children. I can’t. Their relationship never grew into a healthy and equal one and that’s the biggest tragedy.

I remember as kid (I watched the show like 2 years after it ended) I REALLY loved kataang, but now as an adult I think zutara would've been a better romance for Katara. I also love Aang a lot and I think his character maybe would've benefitted from not being pushed into a romance, I feel it would've made the "love recycles around us" message stronger if after losing airbenders his new found family was all his friends and not just specifically Katara 😅
In conclusion, Sokka x Suki is where the real shipping is at and Legend of Korra did her so dirty 💔

Well....I mean it's not as bad as Reylo. lol jk it's not nearly as bad as that. I think I see why people ship this-they see the POTENTIAL as a couple, but I think Zuko would be too busy working on rebuilding his Nation after the war to be in a relationship of any kind. We kind of see that in Korra-he has a daughter but no wife. We don't know if she died, if Izumi was adopted by him, or they divorced. I just CAN'T picture someone like Zuko in a lasting relationship. And maybe that's ok; after all you don't NEED to be in a ship to be happy. And I think that's what Zuko represents.
He's happy, finally after so many years of suffering, and surrounded by friends. People need to remember that sure you can ship whoever you want, but just because you see the POTENTIAL of a relationship, doesn't mean that relationship will work out.
Well, for some people, potential is more than enough to create a ship! Though I am the same way in that (most of the time, I have this one exception) I need a little more than that. Really just depends on the shipper I guess!
I think one's personal interpretations of the characters can have a lot to do with it as well. Like, for one person, the versions of the characters they have in their mind just would not work, but for another person's view of the characters, it would work fantastically! At the end of the day, media is subjective after all and what two people take away from it are both equally valid in their own ways, even if they seem to clash!
Oh man, this brought so much back. I was there for the online wars, the Deviantart "this is why -ship- is toxic" threads, the ship bait, hanging on by the edge of my seat because of the will they-won't they dynamic. So crazy how everyone says it was planned from the beginning when anyone aside from Bryke will tell you it definitely... was not, lol. So much has come out after the show, animators, boarders, writers, cast members saying they had no idea. It was not planned. And OOF making fun of Zutara at panels or whatever, a wholeass video dedicated to mocking... mostly young girls for shipping when Kataang was arguably a self insert ship for Michael really is something haha.
People say the same thing about LOK, how it was planned from the beginning, and if you look at the interviews and panels you will see that wasn't the case at all lmfao. Whenever I see people make this argument it's a dead give away that they were NOT online when the shows aired, because yikes they are oblivious to what actually went down. I'm in the same boat where I don't get involved anymore because I spent so much time online during both shows and the fandom garners this mob mentality that if you stray from canon, you're awful.
Also don't get me started on those comics LOL, the only interaction from Zuko and Katara is everybit the stereotype Bryke paints them as, dark violent people threatening each other, Zuko grabbing her arm and her threatening to hurt him (bc he is opposing Aang), it's fanservice for anti zutarians 100%. And they botched up his mom, azula, katara and zuko's characterizations... the only good that's come from the comics is the art lol.
As for what's said in the video, I obviously agree 100%. While there were Kataang moments, they were shoehorned in with inconsistent build up while Zuko and Katara had this continuous built up and parallel throughout the entire show, and then for Katara to become Healing Mother, and nothing else is a crime. And Maiko... ugh. I love Mai, when I watched the show originally, I hated her, but upon the rewatch I was like damn, she's actually pretty awesome. I'm most like her personality wise, but Maiko was not good for each other. They were more opposites attract then Zutara ever was, and that is not always a good thing. Yes, you're supposed to have balance but their trauma/neglect directly went against each others. He needed validation and to be told he was doing the right thing, for someone to listen when he vented instead he got Mai going 'whatever, your trauma is boring me, lets go get dessert', which obviously wasn't how she actually felt, but she didn't know how to deal with his angst. And Mai needed someone fun who knew her silence was because she was guarded deep down and someone to try and to get her to open up, instead she got Zuko exploding at her that she's a robot. Just, not a good pair romantically.
Anyway I rambled enough, sorry for the suuuuper long comment, it's just been forever since I was able to talk Zutara, and more than that, the happenings of fandom and how Kataangs (and Korrasami's) nowadays don't know jack about how they got their endgame and how up in the air all of it really was.

I honest to God LIKED the LOK series, but they're definitely a huge amount of issues, (Not the least of which how they dealt with the Gaang). The main part of Korra I liked was really the semi-modern technology being implemented. Plus Kuvira. Because the Earth Empire 10/10.
Zutura is definitely my OTP tho.

I would like so say that you freaking got me into this show. As a kid it was all educational tv and my parents never really let me watch channels like nickelodeon or disney channel so while I was growing up during the time this was coming out, I never watched this show, so I would like to say, thank you for dragging me into avatar hell lol, but seriously this show gave me something to use to distract myself while going through a rough time. So thank you.

I'm actually one of the new people in the fandom and I actually shipped Zutara subtly, but when I found out that Katara and Aang became a thing I was actually surprised (again cuz she was like a motherly figure to Aang)
I love your artwork and your commentary on the stolen treasure that is Zutara. Sure I liked the idea of Kataang when I was young because yeah the good guy always gets the girl. But ya know after rewatching the series I sincerely fell in love with Zutara. Like you said it fell in line with the messages of the series WAAAAAY more than Kataang it was never earned. One BIG consistency issue was the fact that aang was given the ultimatum of Katara (his physical anchor to the world) or the avatar state. But instead they’re both given to him and tbh it was like the writers just wrapped sh💩t with a bow and called it a gift. Zutara’s relationship was developed and fought for even if they remained friends and to me that ending would have been more interesting. Please don’t come for me!! I adore AANG ❤️

I personally prefer these two as close platonic friends and kataang, but I both love the art you've drawn today. I had no idea the creators made fun of zutara shippers! That's awful. Personally, I believe on a viewing on the show through netflix with out of the context you provided, shoots for kataang for book 1 however during book 2 especially in the final and throughout book 3 (until the last 5 episodes) zutara is heavily implied. I still think the lack of a group dynamic for the remaining living characters in korra kills.
Romance is definitely the weakest element of this show. I need more of kataang being a more stable relationship and Aang being a more mature human being.
Oh my gosh! I am so glad I stumbled on this video! Because honestly YES to everything you mentioned! This is exactly how I feel and still and forever will feel! I remember being like 16 and I was so in love and so involved with this show when it was still airing! Zuko and Katara are really really perfect and so ideal together honestly. It makes too much sense! They would be so healthy and so powerful as a power couple! BET! like how are they not together this is an outright crime! It frustrates me til this day! TIL THIS DAY! I really stayed up just being consumed with my love for this ship and this show. It really really broke me when they didn't end up together because yeah, they baited us so hard. SO SO hard. The worst! And they had the audacity to just insult us saying its too dark or whatever. ugh. yea ok way to disrespect people who support you. ( you can tell i am still hurt by this a great deal. I still ship them so so hard.)
If I watched the show when I was like 8 I would’ve loved Kataang but as an 18 year old and just recently actually watched it. I very much am a Zutara. From my more mature view point I see how katara and Aang is cute but that’s it… it’s like puppy love while Zuko and Katara is very much more… mature for me. I don’t know just my opinion.
Wow this is news to me! I LOVED (still do) the show when it aired, but I wasnt really on the internet back then... i thought that the 'fandom/internet culture' didnt exist yet. Even as a kid I thought that the romantic part of the show was uninteresting and random. Sad to learn that it went like this :/. Butttt the world building is still the best!

I will I was not there when the fandom was at it's prime. However I do see how much ship bait the show was serving and I could never understand WHY?!
Although I was never a Zutara fan, I do see the appeal. Having been shiping much more obscure rarepair that is ZukoxAang (with properly aged up characters mind you) I honestly think everyone should be able to ship what they want. Also, regardless of shiping I think KataraxAang was a very poorly writen relationship. It was all muddled and messy.
So I'm happy to see that TDP is having Calum and Rayla being what Katara and Aang should have been- a wholesome, young love.

Watching this video really let me check my bias, lol.
I had always been like "augh I don't even understand why people ship zutara, kataang is obviously better!" but hearing what it was like while the show was airing makes me rethink a lot of things. Even when I watched it back when I was a wee little baby I knew that I didn't really like Mei and Zuko or how rushed the kataang endgame felt, and hearing all the shipbait that I apparently never noticed despite rewatching the show at least... 10? maybe more? times. Hearing your take about how the characters feel about each other feels definitely true, and makes me wish for a rewrite of the show where at *least* the shipbait is reduced. (Korra portraying that Kataang was a shitty relationship REALLY makes me wish that they had more development in ATLA)
While I don't think that I could ever actually *ship* Zutara just because of my own personal biases keeping me back, this video actually helped me understand why people like it more. Shipuary does us all good! Thanks for a good episode, Tennelle

I might be the only one here who loves Maiko here over Zutara. And when I was in the fandom when the show was airing, the ship was I witness was over those. And it's because I was kinda in the ship war. since I was a teen, I didn't know ship tolerance so i expressed dislike towards Zutara. But as I entered other fandoms, I found out how ship wars are just awful. Oh and oooooh I remember something--No joke I remember that on a comic Con screening of Book 3 trailer, a lot went ballistic when it showed Mai and Zuko kissing.
And strange that the final trailer REMOVED THAT SCENE XD
Today, I don't mind Zutara shippers ~ oh if you want some talks about what happened, I believe ShippersGuidetotheGalaxy has a video about how the creators might've made fun of the fandom.

concept: zutara should have been canon if any relationship was canon within the gaang and korra should have still existed but have been a waterbender child of zuko and katara, making aang the cool dead uncle to korra and putting a LOT more symbolism into zukos deep seeded trauma from avatar hunting back in the day. hed probably be a protective father to korra and, though understanding that shes her own person, be ready to step in if she needed it. katara would Definitely be the same and would be the kind of mom to throw hands with anyone that even looked at her kids wrong, and there could be a miniplot of korra trying to convince her parents she can be self reliant and them having to get through to themselves shes not just their little girl anymore, shes the avatar and a young warrior and able to care for herself.
also dream sequences of aang teaching korra how to air bend and being super goofy about it bc he may be an adult but hes still a kid at heart and hes the Cool Uncle would be so fun to think about, and the thought of aang being the spunky little brother figure to katara and zuko is so nice,,,
Katara and Aang were not originally planned to end up with each other and their dynamic in the series bible is explicitly described as: "Katara appreciates Aang’s gestures, but is not interested in romance. She dotes on him more like a kid she baby-sits rather than a potential love interest."
That explains a lot.
I was one of the people who put Avatar on a pedestal as a perfect show and assumed it was planned from the start, but your talk made me rethink that stance. I think I need to rewatch the show with a more critical lens.
Ack! Yesss! I was introduced to Avatar when I was six by my uncle, Most Amazing Show EVER! Me and my uncle were both disappointed that Zuko and Katara didn’t end up together! I am still sad about it!!!
I’m not a huge fan of this ship, I loved Aang and Katara from the beginning, but I do enjoy the way these two developed. I also like a lot of the art for this ship! And if it means more Avatar content, I’m in!
Oh wow ;o; I never knew those shipping wars were that bad! Since I've actually never watched Avatar, I'd only heard about it after I heard everyone talking about how good the show was but man, that actually sounds like a tough time to be a fan of the show :c I'm glad though that despite all the hardships it went through, people still love the show so much even after all these years c': Though that's super interesting to hear about all the struggles it went through with the ship baiting and the way they went about writing the romance because I honestly had only heard the "prefect" side of Avatar by everyone telling me it was THE best animated show of all time. That being said though, I'm still definitely going to watch this show soon, even if the romance isn't written the best, haha! I've honestly been wanting to for such a long time, but just never made the time cx (from the small clips I have seen though, I'm pretty sure Zutara will be my OTP of the show LOL )
But anyway! These sort of themed DAB's with Shipuary have been SO fun to participate in, and hear your opinions on your favorite ships! I've know I've already said this, but I feel like it gave me a lot of inspiration this month, and really helped push me out of my comfort zone to try different design choices in my own artwork!

Im kinda just biased for Aang and Katara cuz i thought they were cute together and nostalgia. Also Katara and Zuko being ride or die platonic best friends is really awesome. But you have a bunch of fair points yeah. It also sucks that they actively played up the ship baiting.

Lmao I'm even more of a Zutara shipper now! I feel like she would have at least gotten involved politically/with helping the nations recover. I can't see her being happy just being parked in a house raising kids. Alone much of the time. She was such a strong character and they just made her a house wife after all that? Geesus. Aha, I wasn't even in the avatar fandom back in the day because my cable plan didn't get Nick, but I still remember the Zutara/Kataang ship wars online and how... really vitriolic they could get. To this day I will refuse to cite interest in a not-explicitly-canon ship one way or another because of how intimidated I got of fandom shipping from watching the periphery of that. Which is a shame, because I do love me some mushy sweet romance chemistry, but I also like not having my butt set on fire by everyone who disagrees with me. Interesting that apparently the show runners were bating the shipping wars- I kind of think that was not for the best even from a standpoint of not fleshing out the romance subplots well, all things considered.
Can we talk about how much older Katara is than Aang? The age equivalent is essentially a highschool freshman dating a sixth or seventh grader. Ew. That's less of a problem as they get older, but they definitely don't start out in equal footing in terms of age, maturity, and general life experience.

I dont think Zuko and Katara would have ended up together, atleast not immediately, I see them working together to usher the world into an era of peace but it wouldn't be until much later in their lives that they would have felt able to actually settle down as a couple.
personally i dont care for ships in general, especially in avatar. However zuko has always been my favorite character, and nothing can ever change that.

He even said in the beach episode that he wished she would be crazy for once and show her emotions instead of keeping them bottled up. Zuko would like Katara because of the fact she isn't afraid to give him the business.
