  • Chinese medical scientist Tu Youyou’s winning of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine triggered a debate over the influence of traditional Chinese medicine in finding artemisinin, a drug to treat malaria. The WSJ's Menglin Huang explains why.

The first woman in East Asia to win a Nobel Prize. You would think that if Japan, Korea, and Singapore were so much more advanced, they would have this title by now lmao.

Dude, China has like 80% of the population of East Asia. Not really a surprise.

Not the first woman, the first Chinese PERSON, male of female to win the Nobel Prize. That's right.... a woman was the first person to win in China at a time when women were considered "spilled mile."

If you figure out the science behind any traditional method, it’s just medicine pure and simple!

This was a classic natural products discovery approach in Western medicine. Chemists and doctors have been extracting and testing chemicals from traditional herbs of various cultures for the past century. The key difference is that in Western medicine you conduct clinical trials on a single purified chemical and modify it to achieve favorable pharmaceutical properties. This is exactly what Tu You You and her colleagues did. She was also trained in Western medicine even though she worked at a traditional Chinese medicine research institute.

+dilegentelectron ancient Chinese have never practiced scientific extract method like this and the view of the world of everything possess five properties as 金,木,水,火,土(metal, wood, water, fire, soil) is fundamentally wrong, and unlike the western world where have made the same mistake, Chinese counterpart never acknowledge it's not correct .

+dilegentelectron I already said western world has made the same mistake, it's all about change, improvement, and:

When you say "Chinese medicine" and "Western medicine" in China, those two phrases mean special things. People need to be taking a more scientific approach to medicine in China, specifically expanding the type of hard science driven drug discovery that Tu You You undertook.

+dilegentelectron why on earth European medicine is far inferior? Have you ever read《肘后备急方》the very book inspired Tu Youyou, it's a great collection of jokes.

NO .TU YOUYOU IS THE ONLY LIVING PERSON AND VERY ABLE TO DESCRIBE THE CURRENT SUTUATION. BUT ABNORMALLY A TIRRIBLE SILENCE ON HER PART, WITH AN ABSENCE AT WORLD MEDICAL LEVEL, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE HOLDER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN MEDICINE IN 2015.
