This would be HORRIBLE for consumer. They told the same "we're selling the stores not closing them" story when Safeway and Albertson's merged. With months the vast majority of sold stores were closed by the new owner's (Haggens) failure, at which time the remaining Safeway stores promptly made massive cuts to staff and hours. Now we get dirty stores that aren't close to home with ridiculous lines.

I live in a town that is about an hour and a half from the next big store we have a little convenience store there are about 800 people and a tremendous tourist presence in the summer. There was talk that they were planning on closing down or store they've already run off our union employees and use employees from other countries in the summer time. There are a lot of people that cannot make that trip. Safeway has been pushing the ukulele in and they do your shopping for you so you come and pick it up. They do not deliver locally yet the cabbies will pick it up. I just think that this murder is a horrible idea.

And we think price gouging is bad now...

      @gizzyguzzi 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

No. It's government over regulation, rampant spending and war on energy that caused inflation. It's not price gouging

Both Albertsons and Kroger operate on a 3% or lower net margin. There is no price gouging actually happening at the supermarket level.

@@alan.smitheeee the price gouging is the government raising taxes and adding regulations. Like Democrats making laws about cage free chickens and minimum square footage for hogs, driving up prices of food

The Kroger/Albertson argument that they need to merge to “compete with the Walmarts of the world” is ridiculous. Walmart cannot compete with the Wedgewood grocery store because they could not build a store in Wedgewood. There is no real estate available to build such a store. The only reason for the proposed merger is to strip assets (sell store properties to reap short term profits), and cut costs and reduce competition (with fewer stores shoppers have to choose from).

Not only would this be horrible for the consumer, it’s not good for any employee!
Costco is an excellent employer. Talk to any employee.
With the merger proposed, do not plan on their workers coming out ahead. They must get the Unions involved.

Exactly why to avoid these massive chain stores. Lived in communities where they drove out local stores. These monopolies hurt communities, not help them.

It's completely about real estate, that guy is correct.

This merger and acquisitions of this kind of retailers will never help consumers not even their workers. The sole purpose of this actions are for profit. Inflation and skrinkflation will get worse when this go through. And layoffs will become larger.

    • @jjc4577

What monopoly? Walmart and Target compete with them in most markets and are wiping the floor with them on price.

I’m not worried about Wedgewood… Most of us that live near Wedgewood can drive to any grocery store and pay whatever we want.
I’m worried about the food deserts that exist, not only in our communities, but all across the country.
This is price gouging. This only hurts the people. Both consumers and employees.

Given Kroger’s recent admission to price gouging, is giving them a monopoly on grocery stores gonna help with rising prices?

In the end it's the customer gets screwed. I worked for nine years at two grocery stores Wedgwood and QA Thirftway. You do build a relationship with the customers. I'm not a big fan of Kroger they lied about the remodeling of the Fred Meyer store on 183rd and Aurora. No more one stop shopping they took most of the clothes, shoes etc away The would be more like the Fred Meyer in Ballard. I love that stone . I'm afraid to go back after we were told they were going to remodel again. I hope this deal is stopped.

I really am not concerned about whether or not they can compete I believe we can even break up Costco if we want to it's just ridiculous we need more competition and less monopoly if we want to get prices back to a livable way.

I’d never eat anything from Walmart since they poisoned my parents dogs with Ol’ Roy. If this goes through I’m getting a second freezer and nitrogen storage and shopping Costco and Grocery Outlet.

Good, if the merger is approved, my Safeway store is on the block to be sold. I will neither shop at Kroger's local store nor the Piggly Wiggly replacement. I am lucky enough to have Target, Sprouts, and Whole Foods, all less than a mile away...but Safeway is my preferred store.
