I know a guy who caught a 94#2oz Black Drum here in NC. Was state record for a while. A 100# er and some ounces is the record now. We recommend 10# and down for eating and letting the big ones go.
Great video and a great Charter Captain. Black drum is probably my favorite fishery. They're fun to catch and the class of fish I keep for the table (15-30LB) are very tasty and excellent. The bigger fish tend to have worms (smaller fish have had them too) but the 60-80LB class fish, their meat has a grisly porkchop consistency which I'm not a fan of when it comes to eating fish, that's why I let the bigger 40lb+ fish go, not to mention they are the big breeders. Loved the video!
Back in the 70s 90lb drum were fairly common from what the locals say. Sheeder crabs and surf clams for bait. I think overfishing and keeping big numbers probably had alot to do with the decline. Today conservation is the only way to insure the big ones.❤
Wow in the Texas Coast any black drum over 30" is considered a bull black drum and must be released because they are breeding black drum and they are full of parasites. Our slot is 14"-30". Nice catch though

It's a mild meat, very firm, and is great for baking. One of our favorites since Chris' first trip with Captain Bob in 2009 was drum parmesan. You can even cook up the ribs: th-cam.com/video/B8p_wK0Fhhg/w-d-xo.html
Drum parm is excellent. If the fish ever has worms, more than likely you will notice them in the bottom spine section of the tail usually starting at the anus going to wards the tail. Just cut that section out and don't eat.
Reminds me of when I was a mate on a party boat fishing bluefish. Every fish gaffed and most not even bled and iced. No one ate those nasty fish sitting in the heat all day long. Such a waste.
Big black drum are not good to eat and are full of worms. Pretty silly to harvest them just so you can “take home a lot of meat”. Luckily most of these old school fish killers who use way too heavy of tackle will be dead in 20-30 years.
You must not have had smoked black drum before. These fish are delicious and are a sustainable fish to catch. The only "worms" they have attach to their tails and do not affect the meat. I caught a 70 pounder a few years back and it had absolutely no worms. 24 by the way, so I'll be a "fish killer" for many years to come. 😉

My mom caught one of these in April 2014 in Florida. I have only caught Red Drum and Northern Kingfish, but have always wanted to catch a Black Drum.
Last time I went drum fishing in Delaware Bay we had 21 bites and landed 19 (only kept 1) from an estimated #45-90.

According to Cope, about one in 10 of the fish he cleans has the spaghetti worms in them. Neither of the fish we kept on that trip had worms.

the captain takes you there, baits the hook, casts it out, hooks the fish and then hands you the rod. That's not fishing, that's reeling!
