RIP Melanie. This is a fitting tribute. I've seen y'all a couple of times with Bowling For Soup, this version really pays homage to Melanie and I like to think she loved it.
The most courageous thing an artist or band can do is make a cover that can become their own with a few twists. Kudos for the Dollyrots for taking Brand New Key and making it totally rockable! My girlfriend has got all of her younger friends loving them not even knowing the song is an oldie.
I loved the original, named our daughter after Melanie because unique name and this upbeat song and,..... I LOVE this FREAKIN' version!!! Go Dollyrots go! New FAN in ME! "For what it's worth", oh, that was Neil Young, he did Punk well too!! Joanie Jett & Go-Gos influence should get you far!!
I like this rendition of this old classic. I remember that in the 70's the original by Melanie sold 3 million copies - and it was pulled from the airwaves because they thought that it was too explicit! Imagine how many it would have sold had it not been pulled. Finding this video has turned me on to the Dollyrots - I have a feeling that I am in for some very good music.
+RetroidGaming the whole show was amazing I'm going to see Lacey in June and I managed to meet bowling for soup too. It was a great night. I got Chris's guitar pick 😄
As someone who remembers the original when it came out, I like this one just as well. It is just a different take on it. I think it is every bit as good as the original.
I agree with you. Its a hard task to do as well. I sometimes cover a song by someone and I sometimes I can have a hard time adding ideas without deviating from the song too much. Two songs I've covered I am particularly proud of how I did them was "Science Fiction/ Double Feature" by Richard O'Brien and recently "Sylvia's Mother" by Dr. Hook. in which I kept very close to the originals but originality does shine through. I still gotta record them to hear them myself. When she got to the harder section and added grit to her voice she did a very good job of not sounding too strained especially at the "For someone who don't drive" part which is I believe when the chord changes to C. And doing that when changing to a C is not real easy when she compresses her voice to hit it, she basically went the other way and dropped her voice down instead of hitting the higher C she hits later in the chorus. It was very calculated in that if she had hit the higher C she would not have had a higher C to hit on the chorus. And sort of speaking the first two words of that section was a nice touch as well. Yes I am an over analytical person lol.
I met all these guys a year ago when me and my brother wen to see them last year. She is so nice in person, she has a baby voice. haha and i got the guitarist pick. They are really good live.
I saw them the other night they were at Bowling For Soup's gig! They were amazing! Their first ever Uk tour. When she speaks her voice is soo squeaky, and the guy is REALLY hot!
This is one of those songs my Mom drove me nuts with. Another is A Charlie Rich song, The Most beautiful Girl. Well, I covered that long ago with a Ramones tempo. It totally worked! I thought I was being spiteful but everyone loved it. Curses!
Hell of a good job! Loved the original song and always thought it could be remade many different ways. This way you did I wouldn't change a thing. Great job
@kadoodles01 This was by Melanie Safka back around 1971-1972. The original is more a country/folk song, pretty mellow. These guys do a great job of covering this song. Makes me wonder why nobody did a punked-up version of this before.
Congratulations, Dollyrots. You took an old classic and made it new again; and what luck, a pretty singer who hits all the right notes. Do you realize how rare that is these days?
Holy crap! I grew up with Melanie's version & it irritated me, plus, the innuendo eluded me. THIS ROCKS for a million reasons. They nail it; it's amazing musically, vocally & the arrangement is freaking brilliant, and it maintains that "are you SURE I'm naughty? Or is it YOU?" element, which I never paid attention to listening to the original. The Dollyrots could cover Telephone Man, Run Joey Run and Delta Dawn & do them all a favor.
I grew up listening to Melanie sing this song. Thought it was great then, and still do now. But this version is Great! I don't like remakes where they don't add anything. The Dollyrots make this their own song. Fantastic!!
I think they do a good job with the tune. regardless, it is fun to hear the song again. It's been a while since I did. The black Thunderbird bass rocks.
My daughter and I dance to this 7 times in a row every time :)
I think this remake ROCKS - she nails it!! I completely love it!!
Id love to see it live.
A good old song just got a whole lot better...excellent job by the Dollyrots...

I love hearing her sing in that high octave.
Love this cover - sounds like them without losing the song.

Melanie wanted some guy to put his key inside her rollerskate. BTW, the first concert I ever went to was Melanie in Chicago.
Ah, I remember discovering this band back in 2011 and just loving her voice.
I've fell in love the dollyrots since I seen them live on Tuesday and met them. Kelly is so cute!
+Dean Malthouse i was there too :D
+RetroidGaming the whole show was amazing I'm going to see Lacey in June and I managed to meet bowling for soup too. It was a great night. I got Chris's guitar pick 😄

I remember singing along to this as my dad played it in the car when I was really little. I loved it then and I still do. :)
I've been looking everywhere for this version!!! I love this!!
The Heart of rock n' roll still beats in the Dollyrots!
I have recently had my attention drawn to this song. This is by far the best coverage of it. the original naturally paved the way for it, but WOW.
Agreed
Blackheart Records has another winner!! Great cover.
A great update on an old song, that improves it by leaps and bounds!
Love this one. Fun with a big capital F!
Looking forward now to seeing the band live in Belfast this year.
Rots Rock.
I love this song. They did a good job.
Fun! I love the snare sound. Great guitar tone.
As someone who remembers the original when it came out, I like this one just as well. It is just a different take on it. I think it is every bit as good as the original.
she respected the signature of the original in the vocals, and guitar, but gave it a new punch in the rest of it
oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

just wanted to remind you this song still exists all these years later
I met all these guys a year ago when me and my brother wen to see them last year. She is so nice in person, she has a baby voice. haha and i got the guitarist pick. They are really good live.
Even better live the Dollyrots rock!!!

Curses!

"Some say I've done alright for a girl. "I should say amen to that.
Originally written in ..what 1970?....what has changed? It's a shame. See Ledbetter case in the SCOTUS. It is a pathetic shame.
I LOVE THIS COVER!
This is a great remake version!
Plz release the official audio! This is so good!!
I grew up listening to Melanie sing this song. Thought it was great then, and still do now. But this version is Great! I don't like remakes where they don't add anything. The Dollyrots make this their own song. Fantastic!!
This is an awesome cover!

I found this by accident while looking for Melody's version. At first I hated it, but after a second time around, it is growing on me.
Melanie, Melanie Safka. Not Melody. Melody was in Josie and the Pussycats.
