Loved racing against the 35 in the younger brother, j36. At whidbey island race week in the 90’s the 35 had its own one design start and we raced against the shock 35’s, express 37’s and others. Then after the 35 fleet started dwindling, they raced with us in a massive phrf line. So much fun!!
I have owned J 35 for 12 years. Won some races. On a cruise it’s more fun to sail than to motor. Rather sparse below but performance is worth the compromise in comfort. Mm
Nice boat, I'd like to race on one, not many here in South Africa, don't do balsa core, inevitable water ingress especially at that age. Far prefer foam core or solid laminate albeit heavier. I'd like to race a Lavranos L 34' against the J 35', could be an interesting race. I do like the wide side decks, bulb keel spade rudder??
We raced class almost exclusively early 90's LA/LB area. For those wanting to learn more, see "North Sails Trim for Speed" and watch it 100x. A couple things to point out: 1) The traveler on this boat is in the stock position; I have never seen one with a wheel (this one appears to be a retrofit; they made a nice wood cap for the rudder post). The tiller is fantastic, and I would have left it original. 2) The boat I raced had none of that deck storage and the forepeak was stripped, which made spinnaker takedowns easier. The boat in this video has a lot of added weight. 3) Similarly, no need for the doors, they just add weight. 4) We dip-pole-jibed, whereas the Schocks did end-for-end. There were probably a few J's that end-for-ended it, but in the breeze we typically sailed it was much safer and fast. 5) Very late in the production run they changed the cockpit, but I have only ever seen one boat like that.
Scott - Laurie Davidson was talked into building a J35 beater here in Aus - similar in many ways to the J35 - but 3 spreader fractional rig - 2.2m keel near on identical numbers otherwise. the Cavalier 350sl - great fun racing against theJ35's
This is 100% setup is a cruising boat. It's a nice boat but not an example of a J35 as you'll usually find them. If you're buying a 35' for cruising there are lots of other better options. With the cabin top winches moved aft it puts too much crew weight on the stern and you drag the transom around. You need a substantial amount of weight forward on these boats, you'll see how they balance right forward of the shrouds. If you're not running a symmetrical kite you're giving up a lot of performance and angle on these boats.
Owned J/35 for years. Wonderful boat in all conditions. Went through all kinds of weather and conditions. Balsa core on the boats are a problem. Stupid shirt.

Great boats, I first started racing in the late 80s and crewed on a couple of these on LIS, peak of the class was the 89(I think) NAs with almost 35 boats on the line.. a classic - GREAT SHIRT!
The fast J35's had the cabin wood work minimized. They didn''t build them truly one design and owners could request different options. The one that stands out when I see this video is the teak on the hull in the fore peak. This was heavy and slow, the winners wouldn't have had this.
How tall are you though you didn’t make that reference. If you’re going to make a reference to your height you should probably let people know how tall you are. For all I know you could be 5 feet fucking tall.
Kid bunk? Lets go with love seat. Centerline sink will drain better when healed to port. Oh ya, GO45! hahaha hehehe
Like your channel, lively, informative, and entertaining!
thank you!
Totally enjoying your reviews!
I love the J35, all of fame boat
Like your video’s, keep the jboats comming!
Looks like a J-35 C, different rig and keel. Definitely, love your t-shirts
it's not! and thanks!
Just a J35 with a wheel steering modification. The J35-C has a German main sheet system, stock wheel steering and a few other modifications.

I would love to see y’all do a J36 review.
Super helpful. I'm hoping to buy one of these over the next few months.
Love seeing the "Gnat" behind you. You should do a "not-so-retro" boat segment on her!
very high quality video. thanks

Once I’m out of university I hope my sister and I can find a clean j35 to race weeknights, the lo300 and so on
Can you review a J/22. Or Santa Cruz 70
I used to race on a J35 on lake Champlain and Halifax N.S, on the Marblehead to Halifax we did 17.2 knots flying the spinnaker. Amazing
Scot- good to see you. Old friend from the 90s here. Kristen from the Boat Shop! How the hell are ya?? 😁
Good walkthrough, thank you...how tall are you? I'm trying to determine headroom...
