Me too man. As a someone who considers themself Christian it is a shame that some of them (any Abrahamic tradition) would be up in arms over it. A lot of stories in the Old Testament would make awesome movies and video games with enough care.

So a HUGE thank you for covering this. As an orthodox jew it's fascinating to see how they get interpreted by other cultures.
A couple minor things: being a nazirite wasn't a "life sentence" generally. The minimum period was 30 days, after which you bring an offering to the temple as part of the ceremony to cut and burn the hair. Samson was a unique case in that he wasn't as restricted as a standard nazirite - he was only DIRECTLY restricted from the hair cutting, even though his mother was told to refrain from all the other nazirite aspects. As such, it's not clear whether he was in fact prohibit from contact with the dead or consumption of wine.
All that aside, Samson is never held up as an upstanding citizen. If anything, he's sort of a jewish antihero, the Hebrew Batman, if you will...

When he returned to the town he was confused cause he thought he killed the wrong dragon, not the one tormenting the town; who they had described as evil, cunning, and with scales no normal weapon could pierce.

Thing to remember: the Book of Judges is about how the twelve tribes of Israel repeatedly fell short of the requirements given to them by God. Sampson is, from a literary view, supposed to be emblematic of those shortcomings. This is also, by no means, the most messed up story in that book (looking at you, implied child sacrifice of Jephthah in Judges chapter 12)
I would think the story of the Levite and his concubine is the most messed up story in Judges

Technically, most Nazarite vows only lasted seven years, Samson’s situation was a unique one.
Interesting fact, we know from sources if the time that that short hair and, at most, short beards were the norm in Judea in the 1st century. Mostly Nazarites and no one else had the long hair and beard Jesus is typically depicted with. Thing is, we know Jesus hadn't taken the oath due to all the public drinking he does, SO we know Jesus would have actually had short hair and a short, tidy beard at most.
Actually, a typical nazirite vow lasted a month.
If this story is any indication, 7 years is probably a lifetime on average.

So I just checked the tin and my whole life I never noticed that the lion was dead. I guess the lion iconography is so common here, that I always remember every lion being in the style of the Royal Coat of Arms (or the England national fb team).

A point to make about Samson being "unreasonable". The story makes it clear he is looking for a fight with the Philistines. He purposefully stirs up trouble to antagonize them and provoke them into retaliating or being jerks so he could "justify" attacking them.
Seems like he attacked first with killing those Philistine guys for their clothes.

Some details that you got slightly wrong:
-It never actually says that Samson's mother prayed for a child, merely that she had no children.
-The nazirite oath actually prohibits all grapes, even if not fermented. As others have noted, it also is not usually for one's entire life; Samson was an exception in this regard.
-It seems from the text that his parents were not actually present when he killed the lion; for whatever reason (one suggestion is that he was avoiding the vineyards to avoid the temptation to eat grapes, being a nazirite), he was alone during the incident.
-It doesn't say that the spirit of God burned way his bonds, but rather that it caused his bonds to be (due to his immense strength) like fire-scorched flax (i.e. extremely weak).
Also, as for why the honey doesn't count as an unclean thing under nazirite rules: Only certain things are prohibited to the nazirite, and something that merely touched an animal carcass is not among them. (The command to his mother to refrain from unclean things presumably means those things that are a concern for a nazirite).
Lions are an unclean animals. So the rotting carcass of a lion is unclean. Contrast that to a freshly slaughtered farm animal.
@@ObadiahtheSlim Of course the carcass of a lion is unclean; so unclean, in fact, that it is prohibited to all Israelites, not only those who have taken the Nazirite oath. But Samson didn't eat from the carcass of the lion; he ate the honey.
As someone who takes this story seriously, I appreciate the consideration and accuracy that went into this video. You put a lot of effort into getting this right, and I especially like how you mention the Spirit of the Lord coming upon Samson. That's a crucial detail to the narrative, and it's one that's easy to miss.

@@ultimatedude5686 Clearly you are not taking it seriously. It is easy to laugh, not only at these stories, but at Greek myths as well. You need to keep in mind though that all of these stories have been considered true for the believers in Greek gods, just like this story still is seen as a true story by many. That includes me too, but myths, as was said in the beginning of this video, are not meant to be fiction, but are stories that are not recorded by history. For many people, these stories form the basis of their culture, and to simply point and laugh at these stories as if it were comedies is just unrespectful to that (ancient) culture

Ehh... while I can see some being offended at the decision to include it in this series, as a Christian, I just thought, "Oh, cool, including some of our stories that some wouldn't be familiar with along with cool stories from cultures I'm not as familiar with." Maybe it's just a recognition of the broader definition of mythology, which really doesn't say whether it's true or false, but I think I'm not alone, and in fact believe that most Christians would be cool with the effort to include stories from our upbringing along with those that are exotic to us.

There's a reason people occasionally invoke old testament god, old testament god was metal. He tortured Job to prove that he could, hit the reset button on the earth because he wasn't happy, was basically always punishing his chosen people for being dicks, gave honored Jacob as the heir to the promise that "Abraham's children would out number the stars in the sky, and the grains of sand in the desert" despite him stealing it from his brother, but not before Jacob literally wrestled god, and dislocated the divine's hip, the list goes on.

The point of the Nazarite oath it was supposed to be voluntary and for a short duration, much like the Christian Lenten Fast. Samson was unique in that the oath was taken on his behalf and was supposed to maintain it his whole life.
And yet, Samson still found it way too restrictive.
To be fair, provisions against things like stealing and murder were already covered by the Ten Commandments.

A meme is something which can be copied with slight variations to humorous effect. Many people in the Old Testament had practically the opposite of a rational response to things, so I see this as something which can be applied to different situations to humorously underscore the gap between the expected and the reality.
So I don’t see a problem with calling it a good meme.

To do an Old Testament story on this channel, you picked a good one. Few are going to get very "up in arms" about the story of Samson and Delilah being here (except maybe Samson). I thought you did a great job with it!
Samsons riddle makes Bilbo Baggins final riddle look quite fair in compairson.

Bilbo used that riddle to save his life, while Samson was just an upstanding citizen ... I mean, asshole to his bros to cheat himself to some prices.
I can't help but feel Samson failed in his oath the moment he grabbed that honey from a corpse... and you know, killing random people for some clothes.
It's hard to know the general scope of the oaths Samson was under. Most Nazirites remained so for a short period usually around 30 days; some sources only state Samsons hair as the oath he had to keep to.
He did, and part of the purpose of his story is to show this man being continuously unfaithful to God, yet God stays with him regardless. It's quite profound actually and thematically fits with Judges.
The honey thing was actually against the nazarite vow but it symbolizes Sampson's steps from God.
"With a donkey's jawbone I have made donkeys of them. With a donkey's jawbone I have killed a thousand men."

Our son knows this story for what it is. When you look at historical accounts like this portrayed in the Bible, of course you're going to see sin. God doesn't sugar coat history, He explains the details of a nation He had to continuously call back to Himself to bring forth the Messiah from that line. Kids should learn this so that they can understand the consequences that result from a disobedient heart, and the lengths God took to bring Jesus Who can restore people to Him. All of these judges were "types" or representatives of the Messiah to come. The point of this account is God is merciful and faitfhul, and will keep His promises of restoration to His people.

It's a disclaimer as well as a little linguistic thing too, as "Myth" comes from Greek "Muthos", which means "story" or "word", and even the Ancient Greeks may have perfectly understood that those stories weren't _necessarily_ completely true, but allegorical, theoretical, etc., etc.

I'll admit when I saw this in my feed from you guys, I clicked on the link with a certain amount of trepidation. Yes, I'd noticed the disclaimer at the start of the last few episodes, and I couldn't help but wonder if that was appearing because you were planning on tackling some of the Biblical narrative - and I’m very pleased that you did.
I’m actually part of a group that does Biblical Storytelling in Australia - we did a fair chunk of the Book of Judges many years ago, and our goal is always to get people to engage with the text anew. Sometimes people need to be given permission to laugh, cry and connect with these stories, and Biblical Storytelling has been an effective tool to do so. And those parts which were funny (the foxes and torches part is a personal favourite) we presented in a way that highlighted how crazy the whole situation was, and you guys did likewise. In both cases, (yours and ours) I think we managed to be respectful to the source material.
Thanks for your refreshing approach to this, as this is more than just a crazy story for me but part of the history of God’s people and hence part of my faith story. Looking forward to the next episode!

@@shadowsrose4978 God only hardens hearts when they've already decided against Him. Exodus 3:19 for reference. He doesn't take sick pleasure in turning people against Him if they want to obey Him. 1 Samuel 15:22. The Bible is actually cohesive when you study it.

@@mullerpotgieter Yes that too. It's all laid out clearly in 1 Chronicles. Do I deny that there was inbreeding? No: there were only 8 people and so that's how it happened. Was that necessary to continue the human race? Yes: had to be.
Yeah, Samson's story is of what not to do with the gifts that God gives. Contrast this with Joseph who was gifted with dream interpretation and who unlike Samson did not fall into temptation. I remember one of my favorite sermons growing up was one that compared Samson and Joseph and how Joseph proved to be the better man.

Petition to make Samson the new Kratos, because both are insanely strong and frankly equally well-adjusted
Well I mean kratos was better honestly before being a servant or ares he was a regular (well extraordinary) Spartan general with a family. Then ares had him kill that family, then the rest of the gods betrayed him. Then on a quest of revenge (the one he needed to take as a prequel or between story) he needed to remove a vow he made and the keeper of them ended up dying. After he started liking the guy and empathised with him. Then his brother got killed. Yea let's just say he at least has a reason better then Samsons. And was way stronger.

He killed his family... because he went into a temple to murder innocent women and children. At sword point.
And he was only a servant of Ares because his lust for victory made him make a devil's bargain...after getting his men slaughtered.
Then...after the gods asked him to stop, y'know, wholesale murdering people, kratos "entitlement issues" Spartan, proceeds to wreak until havoc of all and sundry because he can't own up to how "well adjusted" he is. 😄
@@fedupN true I didn't say kratos was good just that he had better reason then Samson. I mean conquering and empire are better reasons then " I don't want to pay for my actions" to kill a thousand soldiers. Plus I said he was a Spartan general. As in he was a soldier in Greece they sacked cities and killed people by the hundreds. I get that by modern sensibilities what he did was a bad thing but in context it was pretty normal. Now the gods telling him to stop yea and betraying him there. that's on him.

Ya gotta take criticism with a grain of salt. Just one grain. I didn’t see it as bashing, nearly that understanding the cause and effect in human interaction can be predicted so if you follow these simple 10 rules then you might even find happiness. But beware in the long span of life it’s harder than you’d think.

Dude I get it. This is probably going to sound trite, but God is real, and he loves everyone in a way that you'd never suspect given how awful this world is. He walks with you, he grieves with you. But I gotta be honest as his imperfect servant, I really wish he wouldn't play hide and seek and make us think we're all alone in this.
I struggle with depression too. Everything's going to be OK in the end. I was promised that. But....we're so far from the end. I wish you peace that surpasses all understanding.

There is a horrific narrative in some Christian circles that Christians shouldn't get depressed/that it's a sin. I'm sorry if that is what you have encountered. What I will say is that you are loved by God, and He loves you even if you don't feel it.
I'm doing pretty alright guys. I've been going to therapy regularly (except for this last week, which is why I was feeling down). I've also got a solid anti depressant regimen I take.
You guys are awesome though!

This was pretty accurately done! A few like things: him getting the honey from the dead lion was, in fact, breaking the vow not to touch a corpse. The point of the story is that even though Samson repeatedly broke the vows and the laws, God was merciful in allowing him how strength. It was only when he broke the final vow that God took his strength from him.
I like how the voting system in place gives some variance to the Myth videos. Great choice guys! Keep up the hard work.

The book of Judges is akin to the Age of Heroes in Game of Thrones. It was the period that gave us legendary heroes like Gideon and Samson. However, if you read the book as a whole, you realize that the main theme is deterioration. The people continuously disobey God while the heroes themselves are progressively corrupt, eventually culminating in the genocidal Benjamite War. Samson, as the last Judge before said war, is in fact the most morally-corrupt Judge in the book. Most of the better known Judges were actually horrible people.
The whole book was written to validate the need for a united kingdom. "In those days there was no king in Israel, everyone did what was right in his own eyes."

I love the disclaimer at the beginning. Understanding the Old Testament as mythological allows for a greater reading of it. I read the Old Testament on its entirety with the widespread conception that it happened literally, and oh boy, it gave much more questions than answers.
Understanding it as mythical makes you curious about the culture it was written in, makes you do research, and gives you a richer perspective in my opinion.
A literal reading ends up in denial of evolution and skepticism of science, but a contextualized reading allows more knowledge of audience, authorial intent, genre, and so on! (With the added bonus of increased respect for other cultures and their myths).
As a Christian and Latter Day Saint I'm thrilled to see you are doing Old Testament stories! I think the Samson stories are especially good at illustrating just how Weird and culturally dissonant they can get. (I mean if you think this bloodbath is weird you guys should see what Jacobs 12 sons get up too). I'd also be interested in hearing about other religous stories from the likes of hinduism and Islam and the like as well. I'm sure they have some doozies.
