It happens more often than you'd think! Mozart himself would import new music into a revival of an opera (ex. Dalla sua pace and Mi Tradi Quell'alma Ingrata added to the Vienna version of Don Giovanni.) In Peter Sellar's production of Cosi Fan Tutte, the tone of the opera was darker and Dorabella's "E amore un ladroncello" was deemed to be too upbeat. Sellars rather ingeniously imported a Mozart concert aria, "Vado, ma dove," in its place and it works beautifully! It's available on TH-cam, I would suggest searching it out.

I don't recall ever hearing any other musical composition, not even by Mozart himself, inserted in this opera. Why was this done?
