It's a very touching scene. Thanks for sharing this video clip with us.
+VelvetGal5 Merrick was treated badly by many ignorant, mean-spirited people, I once read in a library. The article went on to say that nonetheless, he did not become a misanthrope, for if anyone had reason to, it would be him. A gentle soul trapped in a deformed, suffering body. Anyway, my goodness, sorry to hear about your sufferings. You sound like a gentle soul, too...not that I'm inferring you are being treated badly by mean people, of course. Take care.
This made me feel so sick the first time. Dying after the best day of his life. If it was intentional, and I can’t help but believe it was, he must have thought that there couldn’t possibly be any day better than that, and ended it all in peace and happiness.
the music played in the scene was written decades earlier, the director had simply heard the piece and thought it fit for this scene. but i agree that it fits perfectly!
That is "Adagio for Strings", by Samuel Barber, a great American composer. There's also a choral version title. "Agnus Dei". One of the most powerfully moving pieces of music ever written.
Masterpiece. I was 18 when leaving the theatre and totally blown away. For weeks this movie haunted me. Performance, music, cinematography and direction at its best.
I watched this movie so many times and at the end least he died peacefully in his bed trying to sleep like other people without any suffer and doesn't feel any pain 💔 at all 😢
Tis true my form is something odd. But blaming me is blaming God; Could I create myself anew, I would not fail in pleasing you. If I could reach from pole to pole, Or grasp the ocean with a span, I would be measured by the soul, The mind's the standard of the man.
Joseph Merrick was one of the few in a billion human beings with a genuine pure heart with absolutely no shred of hate for anyone in this world, despite the fact that he was mistreated so much.
I would love to have a time machine just so I could go back to when Joseph was around. I’d be he’s friend!!! What a wonderful man. He walked through fire and came out unscathed. So gentle and kind even to those who looked upon him as a monster.
God I cry everytime I see this ending, I know wherever Mr. Merrick is at he is happy and safe. I don't think there are that many beautiful souls out there in the world like John's.
Barber's Adagio for Strings being used for this scene will crush your soul, move you to tears, yet in the most beautiful way. One of, if not the saddest pieces of music ever written. You can feel the emotion run through you.
One of the saddest film scenes ever made.. I remember watching this film as a child and it taught me a lot about empathy, especially with people who are born differently. I am a grown man of 50yr old now and it still brings a tear to my eye watching this scene. We think we have it bad sometimes, but just imagine what people like this have suffered in their existence on earth.. poor soul.
I watched this for the first time in my film appreciation class (I'm a Telemedia major) and wow. I hope one day I can make someone feel the way this movie made me feel. Enlightened, sad, and dumbfounded at the same time. Such a beautiful film.
dear orlandobabe, thanx for writing. I just want to add that Joseph has the most lovely eyes. Im sure everything would just melt away.I am always ''struck'' by their expression (I'm not talking about the film.) How could aqnyone not love this man? I hope he is at peace now. I wish it were possible to tell him how much he really is loved by so many people all around the world.
I’ve told people this MANY times. “The outside NEVER counts!!! It’s what’s on the inside that mattered!! Joseph Merrick proved that no matter how different you may look than others, you can still be the sweetest human ever. I saw this movie and it made me feel so sad how he was viewed by the other people. He could’ve lived a better life😩😩😩😩.
To me I find this sad is because when you watch the movie u want to see John get the peace he so much deserves but due to how cruel us humans can be we denied him that so when he does die to me he finally found that peace he so much deserved.
I am crying as I write this. I cannot watch this without shedding tears, he removed the pillows and slept like everyone else just to feel “normal” once at least despite the fact that it would end his life. I am sure we can all associate our own struggles in life which is one of the true great aspects of this masterpiece.
Saw this yesterday for the first time and I was a blubbering mess at this scene. The music, Adagio for strings was absolutely perfect for this. This film is a masterpiece yet so heartbreaking 💔
I watched this movie last night for the first time and I have to say I have never felt such sorrow and compassion for a character in a movie as I did for Joseph Merrick, to see his happiness when he received his gift box of toiletries, and to see his joy when he went to the theatre, its such a beautiful and achingly sad movie.
I remember a scene earlier in the film when he shows Mrs Treves his mother's portrait. She was beautiful and he said he must have been a great disappointment to her. My heart broke at that point, and then again when I saw this scene. I just can't bear it.
Merrick was something special and he was more human then anyone else he was called a freak and looked at but he reminds us that no matter how you walk or talk what colour your skin or hair is no matter how you looked or how you were born.....you will always be human.........may the elephant man Rest In Peace and always be remembered by humanity and god
His only dream was to lay down. He might not me the same, but he knew that he would die. R.I.P Joseph Carry Merrick. Made me cry. This movie has been so good and sad.
Barbers Adagio for strings is frankly THE most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. I want it played at my funeral, it makes people - I think - ponder, reminisce and contemplate the tragedy and majesty of life. Sublime music
I'm so sorry to hear that. My Mum died recently. My friend, take courage in the life Joseph Merrick lived. Read the novel. Importantly, your Mum is in your heart my friend
This scene always has and still does till this day, makes me cry for John Merrick, I especially love the mother's poem. I looked up on it and it is my fav now.
Watched this as a kid - heart breaking. I grew up in Bethnal Green - less than a mile from The London Hospital where this took place. Anthony Hopkins character was a very nice/kind person who I instantly liked as a 10 yr old. Great acting all round. Masterpiece.
Way beyond just sad and touching. A kind and intelligent man like that went to the advanced level in Heaven I am certain. The number of times he must have forgiven those that persecuted him must be unimaginable. The reaction one has to watching this film says a lot about the level of compassion the viewer has or lacks. I was a two tissue box cry. The girl I was with who saw this movie with me did not cry or show any emotion at all. God Bless you John Merrick. You were (are) a most beautiful spirit. I love you.

It's a very touching scene. Thanks for sharing this video clip with us.
+sunny westfall. im am 9 and I cried alot too it made me so sad
Take care.
VelvetGal5 If reincarnation exists, that would've happened to Joseph Merrick a long time ago. He died in 1890.
VelvetGal5 I wish for the best for you
VelvetGal5 whoaaaa you talk waaaayyy to much
This made me feel so sick the first time. Dying after the best day of his life. If it was intentional, and I can’t help but believe it was, he must have thought that there couldn’t possibly be any day better than that, and ended it all in peace and happiness.
Was it implied that he died right after this?
@@Jackp2003 Yes, he died while laying down, which either suffocated him or snapped his neck.
In real life, he lived a couple years longer in comfort, before trying to lie down in his bed in 1890.
Movies like this no longer exist. Packs he huge emotional blow. If you don't cry then you are not human.
Whoever wrote the music for this is an absolute genius. It perfectly sets the tone and it makes the scene!
the music played in the scene was written decades earlier, the director had simply heard the piece and thought it fit for this scene. but i agree that it fits perfectly!
It's the platoon music as well which makes me think it had already been around
David Lynch is a genius.
That is "Adagio for Strings", by Samuel Barber, a great American composer. There's also a choral version title. "Agnus Dei". One
of the most powerfully moving pieces of music ever written.
Samuel Barbara's Adaigo for Strings. To underline the end of the film/his death.
Just when I thought I had run out of tears this scene happens and I am a mess. This music is just perfect for this movie.
Barber's "Adagio for Strings."
Masterpiece. I was 18 when leaving the theatre and totally blown away. For weeks this movie haunted me. Performance, music, cinematography and direction at its best.
I watched this movie so many times and at the end least he died peacefully in his bed trying to sleep like other people without any suffer and doesn't feel any pain 💔 at all 😢
John Hurt just exuded humanity in his performance. He was an extraordinary performer with a beautiful voice.
I am unable to watch this film, it’s sickening how he was treated and it makes me cry so hard it’s unbearable.
Sleep well John Merrick 😢
Tis true my form is something odd.
But blaming me is blaming God;
Could I create myself anew,
I would not fail in pleasing you.
If I could reach from pole to pole,
Or grasp the ocean with a span,
I would be measured by the soul,
The mind's the standard of the man.
That was his favorite psalm... 😔
This brought me to tears. It's sad to know that he tried only trying to be like everyone else.
ugh, i am utterly disgusted by most of the comments on here, this movie was a masterpiece.
Agreed, at least some people think around here.
Andy Burt well it seems like you don't think really at all
It's a TH-cam comment section. Next to- I think Tumblr, or Reddit, I'm not too sure, TH-cam has to be one of the worst sites for comments.
MarchingArts my ass hurts
@@crazymangamin2546 who's Andy burt?
Joseph Merrick was one of the few in a billion human beings with a genuine pure heart with absolutely no shred of hate for anyone in this world, despite the fact that he was mistreated so much.
Just watched this movie for the first time fully and I cried my eyes out. I’ve heard John’s story before but this was hard hitting.
I'm a 15 year old teen in the UK. I never normally cry in films, but this bit made me cry. RIP John
Time goes fast doesn't it
Man, you're 28 now... 🥺
Time flies, doesn't it?
@@chris_k02 Wow, thanks for reminding me that I'm now feeling old! Haha. My original comment hasn't aged well as I've cried at lots of films since!
@@MikeSparrow that's insane bro
@@MikeSparrow glad your still here 👍👍👍👍
What a pure soul, he was mistreated severely yet showed nothing but kindness to people.
We all hold greatness in each of us and here we are demonstrated the true strength of humanity
Never, oh! never, nothing will die;
The stream flows,
The wind blows,
The cloud fleets,
The heart beats,
Nothing will die.
one of the most beautiful and saddest endings ever. this scene and platoon both used this music brilliantly.
my heart cried for this man, so damn sad. RIP John
RIP and long live Sir John Hurt (January 22, 1940 - January 25, 2017), aged 77
You will always be remembered as a legend.
One of the most wonderful movies of my life ❤
One of the saddest film scenes ever made..
10/10 for this classic film.
I weep uncontrolably when I watch this scene
dear orlandobabe, thanx for writing.
Parts of this film made me cry.It touches your soul.
To me I find this sad is because when you watch the movie u want to see John get the peace he so much deserves but due to how cruel us humans can be we denied him that so when he does die to me he finally found that peace he so much deserved.
Great score!!! elevates the whole scene.
This scene is a heartbreaking and make me to cry
Incredible human being.
One of the greatest people
to ever live I think.
I couldn't help remembering this when I read that Carl Weathers died in his sleep... I hope passing away will be this cosmic and serene
This movie changed my life, love is king, treat everyone with love and respect, love you
poor guy 😯 he was a kind person I don't want him to die
He suffered way too long.
You are over 100 years to late for that.
what a performance john hurt gave as joseph merrick
Ohhh, how do I loved this movie. It broke the barriers of my heart and humanized it
Another sad 11th of April.
RIP Joseph Merrick. Gone 134 years
The combination of images and the brilliant Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber is just overwhelming.
What makes this sad is that Joseph got what he wanted when he died: To sleep in bed like a normal human. 😢😢😢
The things we take for granted every day like being able to lie on our backs in bed at night...
yes,I had a bronchial disease.I could not lay down for 6 months
Saddest end to any film ever, truly a masterpiece in every way, thank you.
Thanks for making a masterpiece, David Lynch.
Rest in peace brother. Humanity didn't love you, but God always loved you.
I remember a scene earlier in the film when he shows Mrs Treves his mother's portrait. She was beautiful and he said he must have been a great disappointment to her. My heart broke at that point, and then again when I saw this scene. I just can't bear it.
R.I.P Joseph Merrick
Merrick was something special and he was more human then anyone else he was called a freak and looked at but he reminds us that no matter how you walk or talk what colour your skin or hair is no matter how you looked or how you were born.....you will always be human.........may the elephant man Rest In Peace and always be remembered by humanity and god
I respect Joseph for everything he stood for
what the hell does that even mean?!
R.I.P Joseph Merrick
You had more humanity in you than any other man
One of the best films ever made 😢
His only dream was to lay down.
One of the most touching and simply beautiful endings and scenes ever. Poetry in the motion picture.
Goodbye mr merrick. A friend i never got to know but value all the same.
This movie broke my heart years ago when I first saw it. And nowadays the ending makes me break inside after my mother died.
I'm so sorry to hear that. My Mum died recently. My friend, take courage in the life Joseph Merrick lived. Read the novel. Importantly, your Mum is in your heart my friend
🌹
When your mother dies, seeing this scene takes on a far deeper response. I miss my mother so much and she’s gone 30 years in September.
One of the most beautiful scenes (and movies) ever made.
This scene always has and still does till this day, makes me cry for John Merrick, I especially love the mother's poem. I looked up on it and it is my fav now.
Love this movie so much. Don't hold back the tears. Let them flow. We all have to let go sometimes.
Watched this as a kid - heart breaking. I grew up in Bethnal Green - less than a mile from The London Hospital where this took place. Anthony Hopkins character was a very nice/kind person who I instantly liked as a 10 yr old. Great acting all round. Masterpiece.
Now he in heaven wit his mama god bless u
this movie is a game changer. it opens the gate to life
Way beyond just sad and touching. I love you.
R.I.P. Joseph Merrick you were more human than any of us
