Thank you Mr. Thompson for your compliment. In a world of craziness, being thought of as “level headed” is a true compliment.

Thank you for your extensive work with these calibers. It's good to see them in action! I need to hit that clear ballistics gel block once my rifle comes back from getting K-hornet'ed!
Two things. First, this test goes to show that while energy numbers have importance, we don't spend enough time characterizing the way that said energy does its work. Bullet design and application matter more than kinetic energy!
Secondly, the other thing that's tricky with these hornet (i.e. short and/or stubby) projectiles, is that you need a program with bracketed ballistic coefficients. These stubby projectiles actually increase their B.C. as the speed drops. Also, the 45gr Hornady "hornet" soft point has a B.C. of .202, better than the other hornet specific soft points.

What I like about my 17 Hornet, using 9.7 grains of lil gun, Federal 205M primer, pushing a 15.5 Hornady NTX bullet on ground squirrels. It’s zeroed at 100 yards. At 225 yards I can put a ground squirrel in the crosshairs and take it out. No adjustments needed!

I honestly thought that the Bullets with more energy at a hundred yards would have done more damage.

Buy one, and leave all the rimfire calibers behind. Since i`ve bought my CZ527 22 Hornet, and reload for it, i`ve haven`t looked at another rimfire again.
The best thing about reloading for the Hornet is, you can tailor your reloads to suit your needs. Doesnt get any better than that for a small round as the 22 Hornet.

Looking for a rifle barrel to finish off a light drilling. This video has sold me on the rifle to be paired up with a set of light 20g side by each.
    Wonderful video, thankyou.

I have a 410 Hatfield single shot with a 9mm barrel insert as my other survival rifle combined with my M6, and think you might be on the right track with a 20ga/ 22 Hornet set up. My 9mm insert is a 9 3/4 inch barrel insert made by a guy in Georgia USA. I drilled out the stock to carry the insert in the Hatfield stock and 4 9mm rounds in a separate hole behind the swivel buttplate. There is an Aistrailian movie called `Young Ones` that has what looks like a British Enfield mated too a 12 ga I found interestimg. I too enjoyed the video showing the comparisons between the 17 & 22 Hornets.

Interesting! Been thinking my 22 Hornet M6 survival rifle might not be enough firepower in a survival situation. But I think I can go ahead and keep it in my Expedition Rig. Especially since it has the 410 under barrel that I keep 24 mixed rounds of slugs and bird shot slung on the sling with it. This convinces me I sure dont want to get shot with one.

I have a combination gun with a close to obsolete rifle calibre. The decision is whether to convert to .177 or .22 hornet. It is counter intuitive that the ,177 hits harder. Thanks for the detail

Hornet shooters should look into Calhoon bullets out of havare Montana. Their explosiveness take the hornet to a whole new level. 30 grain double hollow point is super accurate and destructive!

The Taylor Knockout formula was a calculation created to compare large African game calibers by John Taylor. He was interested in brain shots on elephants and was concerned with what affect a bullet would have if, in fact, the brain was missed. He wanted to know if there was enough energy to deliver concussive force to "knockout" the elephant so that a killing follow up shot could be made and also to stop the/a charge. You made an interesting video in the fact of observation as to damage or results of shooting the clay blocks. Be aware the TKO numbers were not meant for rapid expanding bullets as you used in your testing. Your results would have been just as interesting had you left out the TKO comparison and just given cartridge/bullet weight/velocity and type of bullet. In comparison of the TKO, the formula has a .45 ACP round besting the .243 Winchester. Would you hunt deer with a .45 ACP (I might, given range and conditions) but I certainly would prefer the .243 Winchester in general. Nice video...would like to have seen those blocks close up and in slow motion. js

Thank you for taking the time to write and for doing your homework on the TKO. As far as the slow mo goes, if the video is being viewed on a laptop, or "desk top" version, there is a speed option that the user can select to speed up or slow down the desired scenes. It can be found by looking in the lower right hand corner of the vid, and selecting the "settings" option... :)

Need to try the 22 k hornet in this test with lilgun and 40 grain bullet. It will push it into the 3500 fps range.

I wish you could have tested the same as in your other video. 100,200,300yds. However I understand those clay blocks were not free. As in the other video the 17 hornet out performed the 22 hornet beyond 100yds I think in the clay block test g he 17 would have out performed against the 22 hornet again.
I have only shot 2 chipmunks with my 17 hornet between 180 to 190yds with the Hornady 20
Grain V-max. Let's just say there
I found it difficult to load 22 hornet without the shoulder failing and the case neck getting shoveling the case. Now the 17 hornet is a breeze to load.

Thé last round is thé only one usefull for hunting. You do not want an explosive bullet to spoil your dîner.

    • @brettjones9326
      @brettjones9326 ปีที่แล้ว

No you don't but if you are predator hunter that sells fur you want your bullet to punch fur an dump all it's energy inside chest cavity not leaving an exit for devaluing the fur such as a red fox or tough coyote pros and cons to every kind of projectile one thing i don't like about ballistic tip in any caliber from experience the Hornady v max is so explosive out of .223 22-250 if your target had a freaking peice of hey infront of it the projectile will explode no a fan of ballistic tip projectiles they work with a super clean shot but in predator hunting in the northeast you take the shot they give you
