It was just adjusted to 31.25% Flames retain Markstrom’s contract. So Devils carry $4.125 Mil for the next 2 years. Not only that, Calgary also avoids Markstrom’s July 1st signing bonus.
Seems like a win-win. NJ gets their starter for the next couple seasons, instantly making them better, and likely springing them right back into contender status. The Flames get a young full time NHL defenseman that can spring into the lineup with more opportunity to develop in Calgary, they also get a first (likely late) but still a first nonetheless. I'd say pretty solid deal for both.
as a flames fan, i think we handled the whole markstom situation poorly. this is a guy who came here expecting to win, and not locking up key players like johnny and chucky really is where it started. markstrom came to calgary to win because he saw a good group of guys infront of him. since those guys left everything has just collapsed. our defence looks entirely different now, which is hard as a goaltender. i hope he wins with the devils. i loved seeing him in our net, and wish him the best. very similar to how i feel about coleman, coming because you believe in a team, then everyone leaving. as for the return, i hope bahl becomes similar to a taney style of play with a zadorov style of strength. excited to see him and who he plays with. and having a first is always great for our future. love your videos!
I think its a fantastic trade for the devils, no real need for a mid 1st (most likely) with the prospect pool they have, and Kevin Bahl is good but he takes so many penalties and does not use his size at all. Plus the retention gives us both Markstrom and Allen at 6 Mill ish and more room for another D man move.
Devils fan. really hyped we didn't have to give up our 10th pick and honestly, bahl didn't seem to have much more to contribute to the team here so I wish him the best in calgary. love markstrom, watched his career break out cause i played tendy myself, was kinda hoping for ullmark or saros but i think this is the safer deal with him having more term even if he is a few years older, still excited as hell for next season with a couple of solid goalies for the first time in years.
Looking at it from a 3rd person view since I’m not a fan of either team. It feels like New Jersey overpaid. But not by a ton. Considering goaltending was their biggest need it should be easier to swallow. For Calgary having Dustin wolf makes it easier to lose Markstrom and get a decent return. Honestly it’s more than I thought Calgary would get.
I agree! Markstrom is 34 (!) and inconsistent from season to season. It's a clear overpayment but the Devils really needed a goalie so I guess they're fine with it.
as a devils fan i’m so excited for the 24-25 season to start and see the potential of markstrom. i’m gonna miss the bahler but i think the trade was worth it. hopefully we can do better this season since we have been doing great in the offseason and we make the playoffs and become the team that we were in 22-23 season.
Like this comment if you miss Markstrom in Calgary, he was like the best player that’s sad. I hope they can get like pretty good player in the draft first round or whatever that guys name is for March. Damn, I think New Jersey got
Ima devils fan and the main thing I’m nervous about is how much older he is in comparison to the rest of the roster. I’m glad we finally solved the goalie issue tho. It was frustrating to watch the devils go down 1-0 in like 70% of games or something like that. Sad to see Bahl go especially bc the defense struggled this year but with Dougie back in the lineup and a depth piece outta free agency or the farm will help fill that role. Glad to see fat frank stop screaming about Bahl’s balls all the time he was on the ice.
As a flames fan this feels pretty underwhelming considering most of us were expecting Jersey's #10 pick to be the deal. Just goes to show that we as fans don't know anything about the market lol. Although, if Bahl plays well for us and becomes a second pairing dman and we keep him long term then we could definitely see the deal as a win.
And Tom Fitz rightfully told y'all to kick rocks if you were looking for the #10 pick for a goaltender in his mid 30s. You'll take a late 1st and like it, and be nice to Bahler too.
I thought this was a really good trade and I'm happy the flames got a 1st round pick and a roster player. Goalie trades generally have lower returns than everyone expects. I'll gladly take that deal for a guy that's in his mid 30s. Devils are my 2nd favorite team (behind flames) and I'd compare what Bahl brings to Gudbranson
You'll get our top 10 pick next season because Markstrom sucks. As a Devils fan I couldn't be more unhappy with trade. You got way too much for a washed up goalie.
And the flood gate have opened a waiver claim and three trade including this on today, kinda feels like gms are telling the league that playoffs should be over as normally Gms wait till the cups is given out
Flames fan, I like the trade, my initial thought was maybe Markstrom and CGY’s 28th overall pick for NJ 10th, but I still think there is good value here for the flames
As a devils fan I’m worried that he won’t be as good as he was this past season and in 2 years we are once again looking for a big name goalie to replace him all over again
As a flames fan, I am not happy with this. This was a team that was desperate for starting goaltender and that’s all we got. not only do we fail to get a top 10 pick or Holtz. It comes with retained salary on his contract.
Great Video, as usual, Nyquist - it's not a surprise, especially a low return, given that he had wanted out Calgary, leaving them with not that much of a leverage. Let me know what you think
Any trade where we don’t give up holtz and the 10OA is a win for us. Bahl is good but easily can be replaced by a better player (tanev comes to mind. big, defensive defenseman. he’d be top 4 and casey would play the 7th D role bahl played.)
Devils are making the second round with this move...unless Marky gets injured. Leaf's really messed the bed not getting this trade done...4 million is cheap for a number 1.
As a Flames fine, I think it’s an alright return. It’s honestly more than any goalie has got in a trade for quite some time. Markstrom had a full NMC so the team was sort of strapped for options. I just hope NJ sucks next season so the flames get an unprotected 1st in 2026 and the Flames have three shots at McKenna.
@@KashDarby 34 yr old goaltender at 6M aav who has a tedency to be drastically inconsistent from season to season but sure buddy you're a master hockey analyst 😂😂😂
As a devils fan I’m happy, but if you think this solves all of our problems then you’re delusional. People are always so quick to judge the goaltending (rightfully so) but their defense was abysmal as well after the losses of graves and severson. They now definitely need to target defenseman that play defense, now especially after losing Bahl. Good trade nonetheless.
This won’t solve the Devils’ problems. Their blue line is so offense focused they’re going to hang any goalie they have out to dry. I think Markstrom is overrated tbh and he’s on the wrong side of his 30’s. They’re going to be right back in this situation real quick They’ll be better, I just don’t think much better
I like that side of the argument, but I think the expectations for saros were very high. I’d lean to: Instead of helping his value, it may help to get a deal done as one door of the hallway has closed. It’s still a long hallway: Binner, Elvis, Gibson, Vejmelka I feel are all out there. Saros now undisputed top of heap.
Most of us in NJ think we gave up too much for 2 years worth of markstrom We would’ve preferred and 2nd and 4th round picks with 2 or 3 prospects as a more fair return but if he carries us in the playoffs next year it will be worth it. If we are a 1st round exit or less it will suck Similar to the Toffoli trade last year with giving up sharangovich. If the team has success we won’t mind but if all hell breaks loose again this trade will be ugly.
you would have rather given up 2 or 3 prospects along with a 2nd and 4th instead of giving up what will likely be a late 1st (20-32 aka a prospect) and a 3rd pairing defensive prospect?
And now, after this, I don't think New Jersey is going to be in the Ullmark sweepstakes. But they could still trade for Ullmark to have a Markstrom and Ullmark tandem
on the most recent bold predictions i said "the devils won't trade for a goalie" well whoops
Yeah, the one team that has most other pieces except goaltending won't trade for a goalie that makes sense 🤔 🙄

Breaking news keep up the great work huge move for Jersey
As a Devils fan, im pretty happy. To get a good goalie with out having to give up pick 10 or Holtz is a win in my book.
Seems like a steal for the Devils at first, but then you realize that Calgary couldnt really do too much navigating that NMC. Pretty fair
NMC are only good for players, never an organization’s benefit. They really screwed the pooch on that one.
