  • Part 5 of my Horse Chestnut bonsai, which I started from a conker seed. It is a pretty terrible tree for bonsai, but its still fun to grow.

    Love this little tree, looks so healthy. The curve in the trunk might look too sharp, but I suspect it might smooth out as the trunk grows thicker. Might be worth contemplating planting the tree at an angle next time you repot, and try to grow the branches horizontally from there. Certainly a difficult material, but I think it has potential, if only for the challenge of showing it can be done. Keep up the great vids.

      cheers, yeah its far from perfect, but its a lot of fun, i dont really care if it looks freaky, its just interesting to see what can be done,, or not.

    Nice trunk!
    Haha we just had a conker germinate by accident in the grass, so I dug it up and potted it. Was never planning to do a horse chestnut bonsai... but nature took its course...

    Splendid 🤗 💚 Lovely trees, underestimated bonsai material. I have a nice big one, with a 4.5 inch thick trunk and 7 inch nebari, I'm not sure whether to chop it shorter, it would get rid of a straight bit of trunk, but it would also loose some nice branching further up which makes it more tree like and unbroom style.
    It's about 1.5m at the moment. Let's see 🙂
    I love your videos, straight forward, great info and very well edited, I'd love to see more content from you, perhaps a video walking us through all the trees you have and ideas for them would be lovely 👍

    those leaf sizes will reduce id bet. just need to leaf prune them all and let the 2nd flush push out smaller ones. look funky but cool. i like the funky trees best. thanks for sharing

      cheers. yeah they are certainly smaller than full size trees, and probbaly will go a little smaller... but they are still bigboys

    I've got a few of these and the way I deal with them is to cut them back hard in winter. There are normally a lot of dormant buds.

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BackGardenBonsai if you're really going for it you should look at bud peeling as they do with Japanese maples. I learnt this from Kimi a friend of BonsaiQ

    Glad you are working this as a bonsai. I love sycamore as Mame - using two leaves for each pad structure. Great video

    Love this Ian and the leaves are definitely smaller than the ones on my local tree, bigger than my hand most of them! I may have to get myself one of these too. I now have 2 sycamores thanks to watching your video's. Thanks for the update 😀

      yea i would say the bigger the better. as soon as i have more room i will try and beef this one up a lot more as its weird at its current size

    I get a tonne of these in the garden each year, you can shrink the leaf size by making sure the tree is pot bound

    What’s the deal with your feline friend making a cameo?

      haha he was just near by, then when he seen me put the pot down to film it, he came over for a sniff ... i think he thought it was food and was sadly mistaken and why he swiftly left
