It just occurred to me that this has the exact plot as The Neverending Story. Outcast tormented by bullies goes to a creepy store run by a weirdo, steals the one item they are warned away from, and gets stuck in it.
For the first episode they honestly did really well with bringing the book to life, I really hope the new Goosebumps show does some justice for this one

Edit: Props to R.L./the episode writers for having Carly Beth tell Chuck and Steve that picking on her so much just because they liked her is no excuse! I feel like the 90's were still very much in the mindset of "Oh, if a boy is treating you badly (speaking to a young girl) it means he has a crush on you." Carly Beth was having none of that "abuse is love" mindset 🙅♀
I’ve always loved when RL Stine did the intros, legend. Also the idea of this, the mask being her face, is terrifying. 10/10

The nostalgia is hitting pretty hard right now. I had the videotape of this and I wore the tape down and had to buy a new one. I was literally obsessed. Haunted Mask 2 is really good as well.
The first time I tried to watch this as a kid I had to turn it off during the scene when the masks started chasing Cary Beth because I was too freaked out, but the real scary part is is wondering what would have happened if the masks had actually caught her at the end.
We really need like a full prequel backstory of the mask maker and what happened and what he really looks like. And I wouldn’t mind if they made an episode or even a movie where someone put the mask on and actually Embraced the haunted mask and loved how it changes them. I want to own this mask so bad cause this was my favorite episode.

If I remember correctly, Ms. Kathryn Long (Carly Beth) is now a Dance Instructor, and she mentioned she was able to keep the bust. She said it still creeped her out lol
As for recs, I recommend the sequel, Werewolf of Fever Swamp, Welcome to Dead House, and Night in Terror Tower (Sabrina's actress returns for this one)

My mom got me the haunted mask VHS for Easter ( yes I got presents for on Easter & Valentines day too) and I was so scared of it she returned to the store 😂
To me, the mask looks like the creeper from Jeepers Creepers...maybe inspiration was drawn from each other 🤷♀️

Fun(?) fact: Carly Beth’s actress actually chewed a worm and insisted that she did so the scene would authentic
fr and she did it more than once... i think in a video she had to do the take 5 times to make it look as real as possible... shes braver then she looks like that took serious guts to do eat a real worm!!

Excited to see what u guys think of Haunted Mask 2. Story & acting wise, I think the first episode is stronger for how emotional it is. But as someone that loves Halloween atmosphere and more intense stakes, I think Haunted Mask 2 is spectacular.

Personally speaking, I don't think Sabrina was involved with Chuck & Steve in scaring Carly Beth.
For one, she didn't seem to get any humor out of their prank & came off as more confused than anything. She may have scared Carly before, but it wasn't the same as Chuck & Steve's prank. Sabrina's prank was more a playful moment between friends because the joke was between them, brief, and not meant to humiliate or insult Carly.
The way Chuck & Steve prank Carly is much more embarrassing. Since they go to such absurd lengths to scare her, and their scares are in front of an audience. Which I personally feel is infinitely worse to be humiliated by.
That theme song still slaps 😅😅😅 Sabrina 100% was gaslighting and should've got that mink mink 💥✊🏾

That's so funny you said that this episode was your gateway into horror. Mine was actually in 1980 when I was 8 years old, "Cannibal Holocaust". At a drive inn theater with shitty speakers.
Carly Beth is also a human being, with feelings of anger and revenge. The mask only gives her the courage to do bad things.
The old version of The Haunted Mask obviously showed the Carly’s gradual arousal of evil thoughts and her fear when the mask couldn't be taken off.
The new version simply shows the heroine wearing the mask and going drunk and crazy.
I’m guessing the mask was made for the episode, either by the studio’s artists or commissioned.
The haunted mask is the best goosebumps episode, such a masterpiece and always my favourite. Carly Beth is so iconic
R.L. Stine did in fact attempted more books focusing the Haunted Mask. However,they did'nt see the light of day due to scholastic.

@@PettyPumpkins That would be awesome if this actually happened! What's weird is that the series has been released as a complete set for Region 2 only but not for Region 1! Doesn't make sense! For now, I guess we have to keep dreaming that we'll eventually get our full release of this series.
