That's like my Sears table saw from the 70s. I've had mine for 50 years and it's still the same everything (except the belt). It's a pain the the ass to adjust the rip fence and the tilt is crap, but it's solid. I took it apart and grinded the slots and it tilts much better. Thanks for the video
Yes, that's exactly what it is. This one was given to me just last year, but the one I bought in the 70's is identical except it has the flex shaft drive. Its on the other end of the shed. My real good one is a 10 year old Rigid I got from my SIL over in the other shed with another radial arm saw. Then I have yet another old Sears, same vintage, with a 2 hp Marathon motor on it. It is on a shelf as a spare to the spare. LOL. I was driving by a guys house as he was struggling to lift it into a 40 yard trash hopper. I stopped as him what he was doing and he said throwing stuff away !! So I backed up my truck and brought it home along with a whole pile of materials and machinery.
Good morning Wendell, love you written comments !!! and what a beautiful piece of steel art that your creat !!! For my birds feeders, I use round dock pipes about 5 feets long and 6 inches wide so then can't climb on it !!! Cheers !!!
Aw heck Dave, down here the squirrels are so big, they'd probably drag my welder over and install steps or something.... LOL. That's a really good idea with the 6" pipe sir. Thats something they can't get a grip on for sure. Thanks for the compliment sir !!
Good morning T! So funny and so timely. We have the same trouble. Mrs. GP was just going off about the same thing yesterday. The bird feeder sits in the garden and there is a tree above. Those pesky squirrels now actually drop from the tree above and hang upside down from the iron and eat away at the bottom of the feeder. LOL. You have to admire their creative thinking. I think I would need one of those above the feeder and one below now. LOL. Great simple project that anyone could make given your fine directions and step by step in the video. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful Sunday!
My suggestion, that is if the post with the feeder is such that one can be put on top, is to make another with a much steeper angle above. That way there's no way to stop when they jump !!! Reminds me of our outdoor kitty that climbed the ladder to the roof when we were installing 24 gage standing seam roofing panels. She meowed and I turned around to see her at my feet. Now this one was only a 4-12 pitch and not really steep but she slipped a bit and started sliding, sliding, sliding and when she slid 12' or 14' to the edge with no gutters she just... ploop !! Dropped right off to the ground .... all in slooooow motion. Didn't even bat an eye. Darn cat.
Hi Tractorman, yes, my saw table I've used many a time as an anvil and it doesn't hurt a thing. I don't use a 2lb hammer on it but tapping stuff flat it's perfect. I've had the saw since the early 70s, an old Atlas saw and there ain't a mark on it. I do parse wax the table once or twice a year which makes the wood I cut a breeze,,,,with a sharp blade of course. For our bird feeder guards I used those big clear plastic bowls people bring salads to a picnic or event. Drill a hole in the top and a bolt and a few washers, they shed rain and snow and keep the critters out. Those old clip on light shades work good too and already have a hole in the center. But yours is a fine piece of farm art plus. So Thanks again TM44! Would like a video of you dancing around your spring grass in a tu tu! You'd probably get thousands of hits and it would world travel fer ser! DaveyJO in Pa.
Hahahaha... a tutu...!! Well now that would be a bit of change from the normal Tractorman video wouoldn't it ??!! My grand daughters have tutu's I could get...but I don't know where the dance steps would come from. The last time I danced it was with the devil....and I ain't recouperated yet !! The salad dishes are a good idea and I bet one of those throw away round aluminum vegetable trays would work as well. Thanks for the compliment on my farm art...LOL. Be safe today with the crew getting that big ol door up the side of your house. Looking for an update tonight sir.
Tractorman44 The job has taken place Tractorman44! I had seven guys here and bringing it up the ten feet on my ramp went well! Four guys pushing up and holding while some blocked we're screwed down to hold it while another came up. With four guys and later six we turned it around, propped it up and this after we removed the old door and lowered the frame and doors down, which I will put on my greenhouse under the deck. I made that up with a bunch of old storm windows I got at the restore for $6-7 a piece, built a frame, put on a storm door and a single pane glass sliding door. So now I replace that single pane door with the old double pain that was a pain for my wife. Of course being worried a bit that the opening would be too small it was too big. Running to the shop back and forth a nimbler of times, about a hundred yards away, I got a good work out, the door is in minus some moldings I'll do tomorrow. And the rain came along as predicted, 2:00 as we were putting tools away. So from 8-9 am till two the job is done. Do need to put some caulk around and some great stuff on the inside and reattach the old moldings on the deck. I never did build a stairs up there but I just might. Don't really need it but it would be handy at times. There are two sliding doors to it from the studio and a bedroom. A Great bunch of friends and I made lots of JO and we had a dozen doughnuts and lots of fun. I actually had one friend stop for JO and one with a bum ankle. A political discussing broke out between the last two and this is when the rest of us went back to work. A hour later they were still going at it. I keep religion and politics out of conversations for a while now. I've seen good friends not talk to eachother because of their opposite parties. My parents always voted for the person they felt best and parties weren't A big deal, nor were they whenI was growing up. Sure it was discussed at times but no hard feelings, as it should be. I believe everyone has their opinion and their right to have it. I'd never hold someone's different opinion against them. I see people for their hearts,,,,,,and great old tractors of course. And I think a camo tutu might suit you best and besides, people couldn't see it anyway, right? I tell ya Tractorman, you'd get a million hits. Just shake you're boody a little while you're working on a tractor or sawing some wood or something. Hell, you might like it in the hot summer. Looks like you're back far enough from the road that they wouldn't take you to the funny farm too, for a while anyway. You made that nice farm art squirrel baffle so make one that fits around your waist or use a tractor tire. So you can tell I have many ideas,eh? Good or bad, at least I have some. So that was my day and to wind it up my friend used my band saw to rough out a hickory handle for his adze. It was a piece I gave him from a 121 year old tree that came down three or four years ago. I took it to theAmish saw mill, an eight foot log, and he cut it for ten bucks. This tree was only about 14" across at three feet upandall those121 years to grow that slow. So the grain is tight and close, tough as nails too. It's air dried and I had it cut in 1 1/2- 2" thicknesses just for tool handles. The Amishman has a band saw mill and is always busy. I built a woodshed 4-5 years ago with 1" spaces between the boards and it works very well, except I should have made it a tad bit bigger. Holds nearly three cords but I have three stoves not the house too. Anyway, I used all the scrap wood to do it but did buy treated 2x8 for the floor,is on blocks by the way, and bought 18 1x4 x 8 for the back. Green they screwed in easily, unlike cured oak, and he charged my $25 for all of them. See, I went off again. I think you andI could tell eachother stories for a goodly while Tractorman44. So TH-cam limits us enough to eat ands, eep and do some work. Have a Great Weekend and Love, Light and Peace to Yoy and all your Clan and kiss the dog for me too! DaveyJO in Pa.
@@daveyjoweaver5183 Hot Doggies !! I'm glad to hear the report of such a fine job coming to fruition. Good help is hard to get these days but it sounds like you had lots of it !! We didn't have stairs up to our deck for a number of years either. But we turned the back porch into a cedar lined four seasons room a few years back so we built steps up to the new deck that comes into two sides of the room. Now I can handle all the JO and donuts you throw my way, but just like you I leave the religion and politics to others. I'd rather talk about rotting hog guts than politicians anyway. There ain't a spits difference between the two and that's about as far as I need to go...LOL I just checked Amazon for a camo tutu and they said they was fresh out...so there still won't be no viral video coming anytime soon. (-: I seriously am glad your job went safely and as well as it did. Having a well laid plan come together makes for a great day !! So you have a wonderful weekend as well but I still ain't gonna kiss my old dog.... See you later and thanks for the update, I appreciate it sir.
Here it is 11:45 PM, and I have another chance to watch Tractorman44,...yeah I'm retired, so I can stay up and watch this. I'm laughing here and chuckling to myself, as you were tapping away on the saw table, I thought just exactly what you said,...and then when you were cutting out the squirrel deflector, you mentioned " it's good enough for who it's for", a couple of times, an old carpenter friend of mine used to say that all the time. Anyway, this is a great and simple deterrent and I like it when the squirrels get pissed off because of things like this! Good night for now Wendell.
Good Morning Reg and thank you for the reflective comments. I think all of us pick up the things we hear from old timers over the years and they just kinda pop out sometimes without us even being aware of it...LOL. And then BAM !!! Before we know it WE are the old timers. Ain't that something. Thank you sir for the comment and staying up so late to watch it...and....I HATE squirrels too !!!
@@tractorman4461 This is me smiling, because you are right of course.. in a few minutes, I am going out for a coffee,..I wish you could be here so I can buy you a cup, and have a chat,...like 'old timers do. Cheers!
@@regsparkes6507 If I were near, I would accept your invitation with honor. It would be a fun time to share experiences from days long past. I have a couple fellows I meet with sporadically at the local McDonalds over coffee. I make it once sometimes twice a week, but they like clockwork, go in daily. You'll meet one in a video soon. Who knows...we may one day have the opportunity ourselves. Thank you Reg, for the kind words as always and as well for the invitation....but I would argue over who would pay for the coffee. (-:
@@regsparkes6507 Now that I think about it and being the cheapskate I am....I'm guessing I'd let you buy after all. (-: LOL Have a nice weekend as well my friend....
Hahahaha....I'm glad to see you picked up on the humor...BUT, ya gotta agree they are the devil in disguise and will go to wild extremes to fill their furry little tummies !! Btw, I love your emojis !!!
Omg... thank you! This is the best and easiest way of making a cone and the wire idea is quite clever. 👍 Cutting notches is very helpful when dealing with rounded edges of all sorts (I cut notches when I'm sewing circular seams). 😀 I have been awfully defeated lately by my THIEVING little tree rats (aka squirrels) who literally stole my suet cage off my shepherds hook leaving nothing behind but the chain and the cage was nowhere to be found!😡 Fyi, my squirrels figured out the slinky elevator on Day 1 AND THEN ENJOYED the spicy CAYENNE PEPPER seeds I put in the feeder. I watched one squirrel gorge himself on peppered seeds for 2 hours until he was so fat I finally decided to chase him away. So yeah... I definitely need to make a baffle and hope it works. Thanks for sharing a simple way of making one! 👍😀 Cheers!😊
Well, I am glad to know the little video was of help to you. I did another one last year using an old trash can lid I found on the road. That one works just as good as the cone in this video. If you'd like to see it, here it is: th-cam.com/video/JWTtl1rwAT0/w-d-xo.html Its much easier than making the cone and the good thing is I can spread seed on TOP of the fairly flat lid and the squirrels still have not gotten past this one yet either !!
We have the same problem only we have coons as well. I did what you did and it worked awhile. Them squirrels got all day to figure out the next move lol and the coons can reach over and sit and eat. So I took my 20 in round top just like yours and added a 12 in collar beneath it. Now it warms the heart to hear those squirrels clime up under there and jump. The dong noise it makes will make you smile as they hit the ground. 😜😜😝 I also swapped out the typical round stock and replaced it with galv fence top rail. Cut the decorative hangers off saved the rest for other projects and slid it in the pole crimped pipe around that and wire gunned it water tight. Coons are heavy but they ant pulling it down no more. It’s been 6 months no issues so far with squirrels or coons but the dang deer will occasionally lick one empty ha. It kinda fun tryin to out smart nature always a challenge. Good vid brother I chuckled the hole time. Sleep with one eye open them squirrels are always thinkin.
Hahahahaha....what a cool and comprehensive comment about the little furry critters Anthony. I loved every word !! You came up with a very creative solution too. We havent' had a coon problem for a long time, but now we are fighting armadillos that have moved into the territory. They dig under virtually anything and drives the dogs crazy !! But THEY don't climb the feeders. LOL. Squirrels are quite crafty ain't they. Dadgum tree-rats. But they taste pretty good. Actually I really like squirrel when its cooked right. Broiled...mmmmMMMMmmm....jus' sayin' LOL And yeah...I watch my back all the time. I think they HATE guys like me and you !! (-;
❓... When you say you put a 12 inch "collar" beneath the cone, are you referring to a 12-inch pipe or some sort of tubular metal structure you made from sheet metal? Maybe a stove pipe could serve as a collar? Thanks for sharing your ideas. 👍🙂 I'm being defeated by squirrels and I think raccoons have also been coming at night for a birdseed buffet because the slinky I put on the pole became severely stretched out as if something much heavier than a squirrel climbed on the pole not to mention my flowers got destroyed AND something ran off with the suet AND entire suet cage! LOL! I've been searching for a remedy for my critter invasion so thanks again for sharing your ideas. 👍🙂
For last few years I use round plastic dish buy from Dollar tree, sometimes bigger tray you can get from thrift store and fix with the clamps. And I tied 6' umbrella with bird feeder station so protect from rain, sun and squirrels too if you have tree near bird feeder station. It looks beautiful too.
Perfect just what I was looking for. Thank you. I just made one up but I have my feeder hanging from a tree with a wire so I put it on top of the feeder. Time will tell if they can figure out how not to slide off it and grab onto the feeder on the way down
Thank you Susan for the comment. The trick is not giving them anything to catch even one claw on. But if they do manage to breach the security, remember you can always remake it with a steeper incline. They ARE sneaky little boogers are they not. LOL.
Yes ma'am it is. I sliced the tendon on my left hand index finger sliding a cap on a flu pipe. I lost the use of the last joint on that finger as a result. It just stays straight. So people don't fully realize just how sharp this metal really is. Thank you Lisa for watching and making the comment.
Hi Wendell! Nice metal working skills! That ought to dissuade those fury varmints from getting to your feeders. Thanks for another fine video and good idea!
Thank you Martin for the compliment sir. It really does do the trick...and the best thing is that it was nothing but scrap metal !! Some of the squirrels have been looking kinda mad of late..... (-:
I don't remember how long ago this was, but I have yet to see a squirrel on the feeders yet !! It worked so good, I made another one out of a metal trash can lid I picked up on the road ditch. It too does an excellent job and its' something everyone can do too !! Here it is for comparison: th-cam.com/video/JWTtl1rwAT0/w-d-xo.html Thank you for watching and showing such excitment...You MUST have a squirrel problem. (-;
Thanks for the video. I will be building one of these using your design. Also I love your voice, you remind me of the painter, Bob Ross. Have a good day
Thank you for the compliment...Bob Ross...LOL. Hope it works well for you. Mine is still performing perfectly...One tip though, don't locate it where they can jump down from low tree branches or off of a fence. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for the compliment Teresa. It DOES work quite well and so far it has been tremendously successful. However, I did see one leap from a low hanging branch and almost succeed....so I relocated it further from the branches. It can be made any diameter too but I chose this dimension because of the size of the scrap piece that was convenient. I've not managed to record one yet in their incessant attempts, but one good thing they do is keep my little dog in good shape chasing them to the nearest tree after yet another repeated failure !! Thank you for commenting ma'am.
Teresa, I can assure you it works. I've made four of them now and it's hard to say which I derive more enjoyment from: the birds feeding or the squirrels trying to and failing.
That should work good Wendel. I've been thinking of doing something to keep those buggers out of our bird feeder. We never had a problem until this winter. It started with one and my wife thought he was cute, but he brought his friends and we now have four of em that keep filling their bellies with sunflower seeds and running off with suet cakes. I don't mind feeding them a little, but it's getting to be too much.
I feel your pain !!! That's where I was with the little critters. They were driving our little mutt crazy taunting him all the time and running just a little faster than he can. They'd leap to a tree trunk and safety with only inches to spare. The only difference is that we have as many as a dozen at any given time attacking the feeder !! They messed with the wrong guy this time though..LOL.
I can't see any description of the edge notching tool you used around the circumference of the sheet metal circle. Can you help with how to find this tool? Maybe a name or model #. Thanks.
There's no information on the scribe Kenneth, because its just one I made from a piece of scrap stainless steel. I've made a few out of galvanized, but they wear down the tip pretty quickly. But the stainless holds an edge for many years. I just cut the 4 mostly used dimensions on the 4 corners and cut them off at an angle to create the point. The 3/4 dimension is not used too often, so it was just cut into the middle of one side. Does that help?... I may need to do a quick short video on it after all because you are about the 20th guy to ask about it.
Thank you John for the comment. It actually took almost twice as long to edit it down from a 32 minute video to 8 minutes than it did to make the little guard !! I think from start to finish was about 45 minutes. Be cool and be safe and have a great weekend as well sir !
I need a bunch of squirrel guards but I think they'd figure out how to build a ladder! But I love watching again TM44 and I Thank You and raise me cup! DaveyJO
If there is a tree nearby they will just jump from above. I use a small electric fence unit sold to keep rabbits out of a garden. One terminal to the feeder one to the poll. safe for the birds they can't touch both but the squirrels jump when they reach from the pool to the feeder.
Hahahahaha...I like it... whatever works to keep the destruction to a minimum is the best !! Thanks for watching and commenting, it is appreciated for sure.
You are quite welcome Juanita. Just a few basic tools and you should not have too much of a problem adapting it to your situation. Good luck and I can report that it is still functioning as well today as the first day I installed it !! Thank you for the kind comment.
Just remember to place it where they can't jump from a fence or low tree branch. All the squirrels should be able to get is what the birds flip out onto the ground. Good Luck and don't let the sheet metal slice your finger !! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
Thank you, and it does work quite well. It does have to be installed away from low hanging branches though. Squirrels ARE creative in their attempts to breach security. Thanks for the comment. It is appreciated !!
Good idea. I use pop rivits in many projects as well. I was going to use a radiator hose clamp underneath to hold it up, but screwed it to the pole instead. Thanks for the comment !
Jake The Snake it’s a 30 degree V-notcher. This one has a 3/4” throat but you can find them up to a 1 1/4” throat. Google HVAC sheet metal notching tool. They should range from $35 to $60 depending on your area. A local HVAC supply house or WWGrainger will stock them. Thanks for commenting with a question Jake, it is certainly appreciated. Amazon should have them as well.
@@tractorman4461 Thanks a million Tractorman44, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. I've seen & use the red, green and yellow Wiss tin snips back when I did commercial drywall (late 60's thru mid 70s), also when around the AC guys back in late 60's to 70's when they made all their duct-work on the job, but I don't recall ever seeing the V-notching snips. Once again, thank you.
Pete Eastman at around 8:00 you can see another tiny ‘Chinamans hat’ that has a couple of tabs bent up out of the center. Those tabs are screwed into the black iron pipe pole with self tapping screws. The two components are riveted together with pop rivets. Hope that helps. Be safe and take care sir.
How do you keep it from sliding down the pole? Sorry if that seems like a stupid question, but I am a female who has never done any kind of work like that in my life but I wanna try, LOL
Aw heck, that's a GOOD question. I just used self tapping screws and used a scrap piece of metal to clip it to the iron pipe pole and to the round guard. Self tapping screws can be bought in small packs at Home Depot or Lowes. They will also have the magnetic 'bit drivers' that chuck up like a drill bit into a battery drill to hold the self tapping screws. Side note....my youngest daughter helped me on every project doing a total house remodel job for her. I'm talking wiring, plumbing, flooring, drywalling, duct working, painting, roofing and excavating !! She even ran my old Case loader/backhoe industrial tractor, dump truck AND skidloader while landscaping !! So I LIKE the fact that you're female and willing to tackle a project that you may think is outside your grasp !! Good Luck to you, young lady. Thank you so much for the nice smile this evening.
Tractorman44 Thank you very much for the detailed info. I’m certainly not afraid to get dirty and have tackled many projects most ladies I know wouldn’t dare but that’s because you gotta do what you gotta do if you want something done and can’t afford to hire someone else to do it 😉. I admit tho, with these types of projects, I need step by step directions (which you did a great job giving) and I need to get familiar with the names of all this stuff haha!! Thanks again for taking the time to respond and help me out...heading to Lowes tomorrow 😊 I love my squirrels but they need to stay out of my bird feeders and stick with what I offer them🐿🥜
That's a 30* V-notch made by Malco. Klein makes them too. Here's a link to a pair: www.amazon.com/Malco-N2R-MALCO-Notcher/dp/B002JAWJRQ I have yet to have a single squirrel get over this guard. Not counting the one I caught jumping from a low branch....Moving it eliminated that issue. Here's one I made from a trash can lid. It too has worked wonderfully: th-cam.com/video/JWTtl1rwAT0/w-d-xo.html
Hello Wendell .. We have a lot squirrels here.. We have black ones....they are not so bad. but the red ones are the most destructive creatures around . If I see a red one I go get my 22 and do a bit of target practise ... Great video. Take care
We have red squirrels and gray squirrels here. The grays multiply like hairy roaches I think. One of my buddies a couple years ago said he had 162 cleaned and in his freezer !! Thank you John for the comment and compliment sir.
We do have grey ones too! Not so sure I would eat one! Growing up on the farm...the black ones would chew the strings on some of the hay bales. Not so nice . Take care
I had no idea you guys had red and black squirrels - since we imported your greys across the pond and they displaced our reds (not the same apparently), I thought that was the American squirrel. Nice to look at, but all too clever by half!
Cats can be awesome to watch while on the hunt....the way they move is incredible. And the HEIGHT they can jump after something to eat is almost unbelievable. Thanks Nicole for the comment. I liked it !!
Hot Dang, those blasted squirrels can be a bother. I just fixed another of the Missus' feeders today. My dog keeps them away during the day, except when she's not out there...then they run crazy...but you know what..??!! They have yet to get to the feeder with this guard on it. Well, one time they jumped off a lower branch so I had to relocate it a little away from the tree....
Thanks! This was EXACTLY what I was looking for! I have a squirrel feeder, in a diff section of the yard that I put peanuts in each day. But, they’re never satisfied w/their daily ration. Lol. I can’t believe how far they can jump! I’ve tried moving the feeders, hanging them on taller shepherd hooks etc but inevitably they’ve managed to reach the feeders. Because of the number of feeders I have, I didn’t want to buy baffles & have a large sheet of aluminum I could use. I bought it @ Home Depot but it was over $20-any suggestion for cheaper option of metal in sheets? Type of metal or source/store? Thanks again for the video. I enjoyed it & hearing your voice. Reminded me of home, where I grew up in Oklahoma.
Thank you Mary for the kind comments. Metal of all kinds, unfortunately has just about gone crazy expensive. I buy it by the sheets at local HVAC supply houses, usually in 24x96, 36x96 or 48x96 sheets. I have the good fortune to still have a fair quantity of scraps left over from small sheet metal projects. It may sound silly, but if you have a local air conditioning service company near you, you may look behind their business and be able to salvage a fair size piece of old duct work that would work for your project. Of course it might be a good idea to ask them first. LOL. You may be able to adapt cheap metal trash can lids into something similar too....just a thought. As you progress with your efforts, please feel free to stop by and let me know just what you end up doing. And the Missus just brought home another feeder, so I might be making yet another squirrel guard real soon. Thank you again for the comment...and BTW, Mary is my favorite name for a lady.....That's my wife's name too. LOL.
Hahahaha...good one..... I can't even begin to spell that one. LOL. I can report that it still has yet to be breached by the innovative squirrels. But I did have to move it away from the low branches because they tried to attack it from above and would have succeeded if they'd just caught one of the metal springs. But I moved it before that happened. Thanks Paul, for the smile inducing comment sir !!
The most effective way to to dispose of grey squirrels IN MY YARD is the Havahart model # 1083 EZ-set, 1 door trap. I don't have the time or energy to be making home made traps by hand. I have used the Havahart EZ-set # 1083 to dispose of 360 grey squirrels since June 2014. The 1-door EZ-set traps save me time in 3 different ways: 1) They are much easier and faster to set than 2 door traps. 2) they are also much easier to bait because you just put the bait behind the trigger plate, instead of trying to balance the bait on top of the trigger plate. I have had the 1030 go off in my hand from the motion while walking with it. Very annoying. 3) I don't have any false alarms any more because the 1083 is NEVER set off by small birds. It takes a 1 pound animal to set off the 1083 and almost all grey squirrels weigh at least 1 pound. That is important if you are not home to keep checking your traps. You will never catch a squirrel, if the trap is closed for hours with a small bird inside. I used to use a 1030 for grey squirrels but since I bought 2 of the EZ set traps I stopped using the older model trap. Every squirrel that I dispose of is 1 less squirrel that will ravage my garden of tomatoes and my bird feeders. I take them all to the exact same spot in the nearby woods and allow scavengers like possums to have the carcass. Win-Win Possums are unfairly maligned by many people simply because of the way they look Home Depot and Lowes do not stock the 1083 but I was able to get them online for about $35 via Amazon WRZ 2020-08-14 Chester County, PA
Thanks Bill, for some really good information on the Havahart. I absolutely HATE the damage they do to my garden. They will even wait until my sweet corn gets about 4'' - 6'' high, then dig up the roots and eat the split and softening seed kernel. Its infuriating !! The sheer number of tomatoes they destroy is incredible too. A good place for them is on my plate after a few minutes browning in the skillet then 15 minutes in a pressure cooker with a little salt and pepper. They look even better with some cooked carrots and potatoes sharing space on the plate..... LOL. I think you've got me beat tallying out at 360 so far. Keep up the good fight !!
@@tractorman4461 Yeah my nephew has been pestering me about killing grey squirrels for a couple of years. Last week a squirrel got into the hood of his car and chewed up enough wires to cause over a grand in damage. His wife made the mistake of telling my wife but he doesn't know, I know about it, yet. The next time he mentions squirrels to me again, I'm going to have a lot of funny insults for him. Now I have an inventor looking at modifying the 1083, so that it can be set off by remote control and I can begin ridding my bird feeders of starlings. I like Starlings even less than I like grey squirrels.
@@tractorman4461 I keep a close watch on our tomato garden and pick them when they are still orange, a day or two before I would normally pick them, just to save them from being half eaten by grey squirrels. I also save the plastic, zip top bags that we get sliced deli meats and cheese in. Then I use them in the summer to zip them around the tomatoes I want to protect from squirrels and cat birds. I also slice grapes for the catbirds and put them in a separate platform bird feeder to distract the catbirds from our tomatoes. I like catbirds but I it's a relief when they fly south early and I don't have to worry about them in the garden.
Hahahahaha....gotta keep 'em in shape don't you?! I go some time between projects now as well and yes...you can feel the burn pretty good. LOL. Thanks for stopping in for a visit John Doe. Sorry I missed your comment for a month.
Thank you RRR. Except for the one time a squirrel leapt from a branch, I have yet to have one get to the feeders past this shield. Oh yeah, I relocated it immediately...away from the branch.
Thank you Peter for taking the time to watch and for commenting so favorably sir. I enjoy these quick and little project from time to time...and the best thing is its just scrap material AND it does the trick as well.
Nice work putting a wire bead around the shield. I used my table saw as my workbench for a few years before I built the benches along yhevwalls. Did everything on it from assembling windows to rebuilding engines. Ended up giving it to my son after we moved. He was going to buy one and it was just taking up valuable space in the garage. Since then I bought a 1950's model with a tilting arbor. It's bout half the size.
I had a fellow two weeks ago asked me to stop by and take a look at an Atlas (?) tilt arbor he bought in '62 because he'd cut several fingers off a few years back and wasn't doing as much work anymore. I haven't had time yet, but I will soon as I get the chance to go down his way. That wire does a good job of stabilizing the perimeter as well as rounding it off to minimize the chance of getting cut. Thanks for taking the time to watch sir !!
Hi Wendell. I hope everything is okay at your place. Looks like todays storm rolled over you first. I took a while off to kick this. Knew It was coming because I watched Lydia go through it. She went back to work Wednesday and I started coughing. Bad sinus infection that rolled into a chest cold. I'll survive. I just won't enjoy it for another day or two. 😡 I closed up the shed and covered the tractor with a tarp yesterday because it was going to snow this morning. Old Man Winter never gives up easy. 😆 Haven't posted since Wednesday. Edited Mondays last night. Real close to finishing.
@@OldSneelock Well good...I was thinking maybe you'd broken an arm or something. I've been a bit under the weather myself with a bit of a cough but not too awful bad. Heck we had 78 degrees last Thursday and this morning the rain turned to huge snowflakes for an hour or two and its 38 F right now. I think Old Man Winter would mellow out a bit if he'd just stop by and visit Old Mother Nature every now and then... In the FWIW department....I'm so far behind on editing it ain't even funny. LOL
nice design - how's it working? I wonder if it's more effective without the wire reinforcement, so no possibility of squirrels finding a purchace? only thing is - I've never even seen that notching tool, let alone have one! back to the pipe method!
S Roberts Happy Thanksgiving !! It works wonderfully well. I can report after all this time not one single event has occurred where they beat the system. The wire is just for reinforcement of the perimeter of the thin metal. With it turned under like it is here the top surface remains slick and gives nothing for them to grab. Thanks for showing an interest. Those 30 degree notches available at sheet metal supply houses. Or probably on line.
@@tractorman4461 Oh lord, Happy Thanksgiving to you - we've become a bit vague about that across the pond... have a great one! Well I think your design beats the commercial ones aesthetically, and sounds like it does a great job too. The notcher would be expensive for me though - thinking cap on!
S Roberts yes now I’m laughing. What’s funny is a fellow never knows just who he’s talking to. There’s no accents in the printed word. LOL. I suspect Thanksgiving is kinda an odd concept to our foreign brothers. Of course I know it’s US that have the accent ...right ?? LOL. Thank you again for the comments !! It is greatly appreciated as well as the compliment on the design. Take care and please, don’t be a stranger.

They sure can be a destructive force if you let 'em. At least they give my dog his exercise. She'll chase them to a tree and they go just out of reach then turn around facing down and dare her to try and get them. It's a riot !! Thanks Tom for reminding me to check the feeders today. Hahahahah....by golly, if you lived close enough, I just happen to have a piece of metal big enough for another one....LOL. We have a TON of squirrels this year once again. Every time the front door is popped open, they scurry for the trees because they know the little dog is close behind that noise !! Thank you so much Cynthia for the smile this evening....
keepers well we must have really got some dumb squirrels in my yard because my feeders have not yet been compromised. Well once one leaped from a low branch and I moved it. It has been and remains totally unbroached by the critters so far and I’ve watched countless attempts. Can’t reach around. Can’t grip on the sheet metal. Can’t jump out and grab on. I’ve had good luck. But that’s not to say they may be able to one of these days. Hey man thanks for the comment.
You obviously haven't tried it keepers. They've never climbed over any of mine. They've been a 100% deterrent and I spent decades trying to thwart those things.
Well by golly Gus, you caught me !! LOL. However, I would never do this to my super sweet Rigid in the other shed, but these old Craftsman saws are pretty much all over the place. I've picked up quite a few for free and gave them to others that need them. I think this one here was like 20 bucks at a farm auction. One of the ladies I worked with gave me a one year old Craftsman 12'' that I gave to my nephew. I also just got another 10'' belt drive retro fitted with a Marathon 2 hp single phase motor when a guy asked me to help him toss it into a roll-off hopper behind his shop. But I DO agree it is a NO-NO to treat them as badly as I do this one....
Hahaha. Yes I do have a tendency to clutter up a workspace. My normal layout table is 4’x8’ and in the old workshop. So yes, it has disappeared right there in plain sight !! Thank you Charlie for watching and commenting sir.
How's she goin'? Squirrels are poison for sure. They'll eat anything and everything. BTW, what's with the short sleeves? Man it was -5 here this morning and we had more snow. And what the heck happened to you chin? LOLNice job on the China man's hat. That should do the trick, but squirrels will be squirrels!!!. Take care!!!
Mike, its been in the upper 70's F for at least three days and supposed to be 68F today. But I'll let you in on a little secret....the old chin is still sporting the whiskers and through the majic of computers, this is an archival video I didn't have time to edit last summer. LOL But I have been in tee shirts for a few days though. And boy the squirrels are all over the place already. A car smooshed two at the same time literally twenty feet from my driveway yesterday. They may have been trying to make little squirrels for all I know..... Dang !!
@@tractorman4461 Glad to hear you still have your face jacket!!! As for the squirrels ... some years they are very plentiful. One year I shot 22 of them around the camp and I swear it didn't make a dent in the numbers at all. I think they make as many as the area will support. So if one or two go missing for whatever the reason, they make one or two more to replace them!!! Enjoy the warm weather buddy. Here this morning it's +5 and sunny. It's coming!!!
By logic it should work but in real life it does not, squirrels can pass that by jumping over it after climbing up to 10 inches before reaching the pole blocker,I made one 32 inches wide and they still got to pass it after 2 days of trying they became professionals in doing it in a blink of an eye. Squirrels won...SMH
Hahahahaha....Houdini must live in his afterlife. My squirrels must be a bit mentally delayed, because so far I've had no Houdini Squirrels breach the design as evidenced by the condition of the feeders daily. My pole is 3/4'' black iron pipe and they climb to just under the hood, stretch out to grab the slick metal edge and fall to the ground....then repeat until they give up. I've watched them jump from branches from above but hit the hood and slip directly to the ground. However they have since partnered with the local deer and occasionally reap the bounties easily from the ground as the deer nuzzle the feeders sideways to get at the grain. The deep hooks of the hangers keep the deer from knocking them off. A light coating of bar soap or lard or gun grease around the perimeter of the ring and they can't possibly get a grip. Hey man, thanks for the comment and keep at it, you'll eventually beat them !! One day though, they'll make it over this one too.
Tractorman, this a very nice simple tutorial that works. I've made four since I found your video and they're infallible. My only admonition is your use of the terms "chinaman's hat" and "cotton picker" in reference to the squirrels........ both of which are derogatory and racist.
I am glad to see you are enjoying success at deterring the little destructive thieves. I understand these times call for a more kinder and gentler use of descriptive terminology Ren Robb, so consider me duly admonished. The future will bear no such references. However it is interesting to note that while I was stationed at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii with the Marines in the early 70's there was a little island famously referred to as 'Chinaman's Hat'. Though it may not be called that any longer. Also with 42+ years under my belt in commercial HVAC, it is also a common term in reference to a peaked flu cap...of which I've fabricated and installed literally hundreds...factory made or hand made. picclick.co.uk/Roof-cowl-chinamans-hat-galvanised-steel-chimney-cover-401747290406.html My Dad, born in 1909, when greeting old friends weekly at church, at funerals or any social gathering would clasp their hands with the standard greeting..."How ya doin', you old cottonpicker'' !! And like wise an old cow or hog that wouldn't do what he wanted or a chicken killing dog would be referred to as 'you old cottonpicker'.... So on one hand it was certainly an endearing term reserved for conveying friendship and camaraderie and on the other hand an admonishment for an animal not doing the things it should do...or in some cases doing things it shouldn't do. But like I said, times are a changing. Mind you I'm not making excuses, I just thought I'd clarify another side to the offending terminology that needed a little light shed on it. Again, I'm glad to hear how well the device works. I have yet to have one breach mine, except one I watched leap off a low branch from above. So I moved it out of reach quickly.
I think they're funny Ren. Only an SJW like you would get so offended by this, and you're neither black nor asian. Looking for a problem where there ain't one, are you? Is there a derogatory term I could sincerely use on you perhaps? Give you a real problem.
Yeah, you're probably right. But after being in the industry close to 45 years now and never having them referred to as anything else...it'll be a bit tough to catch my tongue. If you google the term and add 'sheet metal' to it, I think you'll find many many avenues to investigate. It's not intended to be derogatory or demeaning in any way no matter how it may sound to those not associated with the sheet metal trade. I thank you Angela for pointing that out though. On a side note, I can't begin to estimate how may of them I have made for a wide variety of projects in the last 40 years, from tiny 3'' diameter ones to others several feet in diameter.

@@RCAFpolarexpress hahahahaha !!
There ain't a spits difference between the two and that's about as far as I need to go...LOL

Hahahahaha....what a cool and comprehensive comment about the little furry critters Anthony. I loved every word !! You came up with a very creative solution too. We havent' had a coon problem for a long time, but now we are fighting armadillos that have moved into the territory. They dig under virtually anything and drives the dogs crazy !! But THEY don't climb the feeders. LOL. Squirrels are quite crafty ain't they. Dadgum tree-rats. But they taste pretty good. Actually I really like squirrel when its cooked right. Broiled...mmmmMMMMmmm....jus' sayin' LOL And yeah...I watch my back all the time. I think they HATE guys like me and you !! (-;
Love your style of narration!!! LOL
Heather Throne thank you for a wonderful comment !! Thank you also for watching AND taking the time to comment.
I sliced my fingers open 14 times just watching this 😁
Hahahahaha.... I'm thinking of the last piece of metal at Steve's house...... (-:
For last few years I use round plastic dish buy from Dollar tree, sometimes bigger tray you can get from thrift store and fix with the clamps. And I tied 6' umbrella with bird feeder station so protect from rain, sun and squirrels too if you have tree near bird feeder station. It looks beautiful too.
That's certainly a good idea. Whatever works for you is the way to go. I just like playing with metal. Blasted squirrels.
LOL.
@SB I have same problem
Will be doing the same
That flashing is sharper that Gillette ever thought of 😉
Yes ma'am it is.
😀👍
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME SIR! CHEERS!
I don't remember how long ago this was, but I have yet to see a squirrel on the feeders yet !! It worked so good, I made another one out of a metal trash can lid I picked up on the road ditch. It too does an excellent job and its' something everyone can do too !! Here it is for comparison: th-cam.com/video/JWTtl1rwAT0/w-d-xo.html Thank you for watching and showing such excitment...You MUST have a squirrel problem. (-;
That's a great idea and a lot less expensive that most others things I've seen. I was hoping to see it repel a squirrel!
@@renrobb978 I agree. I'd enjoy watching both!
Good job I'm making one soon oh ha I made one using old wheel cover worked but yours looks better...
What a great idea. Thanks man.
No problem sir. And with basic tools from Home Depot, its not beyond most peoples ability to form. Thanks for the comment Scott.
That's cool T44! It didn't take you long! Have a great weekend!
Wow thank you so much for this video that is a great idea I will try to make one for my bird feeding Excelente 💕💕💕💕
You are quite welcome Juanita. Just a few basic tools and you should not have too much of a problem adapting it to your situation. Good luck and I can report that it is still functioning as well today as the first day I installed it !! Thank you for the kind comment.
Thank you for the tutorial. It’s a great idea. I’ll give it a try. 🙏
Just remember to place it where they can't jump from a fence or low tree branch. All the squirrels should be able to get is what the birds flip out onto the ground. Good Luck and don't let the sheet metal slice your finger !! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
Very Clever!!!
Thank you, and it does work quite well. It does have to be installed away from low hanging branches though. Squirrels ARE creative in their attempts to breach security. Thanks for the comment. It is appreciated !!
I made one some what like that it works good pop rivits works real good put a zip tie above and a zip tie under side it keeps it in place on the pole
Good idea. I use pop rivits in many projects as well. I was going to use a radiator hose clamp underneath to hold it up, but screwed it to the pole instead. Thanks for the comment !
Tractorman 44, what is the name of the tool used for notching around the circumference?
How did you mount it?
Pete Eastman at around 8:00 you can see another tiny ‘Chinamans hat’ that has a couple of tabs bent up out of the center. Those tabs are screwed into the black iron pipe pole with self tapping screws. The two components are riveted together with pop rivets. Hope that helps. Be safe and take care sir.
Tractorman44 thank you TM
Pete Eastman no problem at all Pete. Anytime. Thanks for showing interest sir.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond and help me out...heading to Lowes tomorrow 😊 I love my squirrels but they need to stay out of my bird feeders and stick with what I offer them🐿🥜
@@stuff2047 you are welcome and good luck !!
Tractorman44 Thank you!
Beautiful!
Thanks Rick, so far I've had great luck with keeping them off the feeders with it. Thanks for watching and commenting !!
Very useful vid. Your squirrel guard looks a lot better than other DIY cone shaped guards I've seen on YT. What brand notcher did you use?
We had a Big Tabby Tom , that kept the Vermin in CHECK ! Yup it was Brutal at times .
Cats can be awesome to watch while on the hunt....the way they move is incredible. And the HEIGHT they can jump after something to eat is almost unbelievable. Thanks Nicole for the comment. I liked it !!
I laugh every day as my wife curses the squirrels as they have raided her feeders once again.
LOL.
Anyone want a bird-guard for a squirrel feeder?!?
Yeah! Now yer talkin'!... - waw -
Now that one made me laugh...... OUT LOUD !! LOL. Funny stuff.
Just found the TT44, good job, just what I was looking for...Well-made by hand, that would keep a Pterodactyl away...
The most effective way to to dispose of grey squirrels IN MY YARD is the Havahart
model # 1083 EZ-set, 1 door trap. I don't have the time or energy to be making
home made traps by hand.
I have used the Havahart EZ-set # 1083 to dispose of 360 grey squirrels since
June 2014. The 1-door EZ-set traps save me time in 3 different ways:
1) They are much easier and faster to set than 2 door traps.
2) they are also much easier to bait because you just put the bait behind the
trigger plate, instead of trying to balance the bait on top of the trigger plate.
I have had the 1030 go off in my hand from the motion while walking with it. Very annoying.
3) I don't have any false alarms any more because the 1083 is NEVER set off
by small birds. It takes a 1 pound animal to set off the 1083 and almost all
grey squirrels weigh at least 1 pound. That is important if you are not home
to keep checking your traps. You will never catch a squirrel, if the trap is closed
for hours with a small bird inside.
I used to use a 1030 for grey squirrels but since I bought 2 of the EZ set traps
I stopped using the older model trap. Every squirrel that I dispose of is 1 less squirrel
that will ravage my garden of tomatoes and my bird feeders. I take them all
to the exact same spot in the nearby woods and allow scavengers like possums
to have the carcass. Win-Win
Possums are unfairly maligned by many people simply because of the way they look
Home Depot and Lowes do not stock the 1083 but I was able to get them
online for about $35 via Amazon

Yeah my nephew has been pestering me about killing grey squirrels for a couple of years.
Now I have an inventor looking at modifying the 1083, so that it can be set off by remote control
and I can begin ridding my bird feeders of starlings. I like Starlings even less than I like grey squirrels.
@@tractorman4461 I keep a close watch on our tomato garden and pick them when they
are still orange, a day or two before I would normally pick them, just to save them from being
half eaten by grey squirrels. I also save the plastic, zip top bags that we get sliced deli meats
and cheese in. Then I use them in the summer to zip them around the tomatoes I want to protect
from squirrels and cat birds. I also slice grapes for the catbirds and put them in a separate
platform bird feeder to distract the catbirds from our tomatoes. I like catbirds but I it's a relief
when they fly south early and I don't have to worry about them in the garden.

Thanks for taking the time to watch sir !!

nice design - how's it working?
@@tractorman4461 Oh lord, Happy Thanksgiving to you - we've become a bit vague about that across the pond... have a great one!

keepers well we must have really got some dumb squirrels in my yard because my feeders have not yet been compromised.
I’m gonna be one of those woodworking guys and holler at you,That’s a big NO NO.
I'm gonna guess u have a nice bench. But it just collected items and now it has disappeared .😉
Hahaha. Yes I do have a tendency to clutter up a workspace. My normal layout table is 4’x8’ and in the old workshop. So yes, it has disappeared right there in plain sight !! Thank you Charlie for watching and commenting sir.
I hear people call those things bird poop catchers
Hahahaha....it certainly does that quite well. But what it does best is confound those blasted squirrels !! LOL.
And, if it ever rains where you are, they get rinsed off quite well.
Also with 42+ years under my belt in commercial HVAC, it is also a common term in reference to a peaked flu cap...of which I've fabricated and installed literally hundreds...factory made or hand made. picclick.co.uk/Roof-cowl-chinamans-hat-galvanised-steel-chimney-cover-401747290406.html
My Dad, born in 1909, when greeting old friends weekly at church, at funerals or any social gathering would clasp their hands with the standard greeting..."How ya doin', you old cottonpicker'' !!
Too many steps. Just feed the squrriel
Well, the little boogers would eat me out of house and home I'm afraid. Their appetite is insatiable ! LOL
He needs to stop saying “chinamen” hat.
