  • Peter Holcombe explores Texas in his Winnebago Revel Sprinter 4x4 adventure van. The Big Bend region is rich with wonderful options for backcountry vehicle-based camping around Big Bend Ranch and in Big Bend National Park, including a North-to-South tour of the Old Ore Road. This area is rich with winter Overlanding options and is one of the best options to escape the cold that January and February bring to North America.

Peter, I think you made a wise choice to evaluate your options when the road got tough. Something I have learned from watching Matt’s Off Road Recovery and Trailmater that when by yourself with only one vehicle and it gets too rough, beat to be conservative.

Thanks. I always reserve the right to reverse. No shame it that. Thanks for watching!

I’ve done old ore before and I had someone to spot me. Props on doing it alone!

There were a few places where I was in and out spotting myself and making rock piles to get up/down ledges. It was a fun your.

I hope you do more “travel/adventure” type videos about Vanlife. This is one of the best videos I have seen. This video definitely beats all the TH-camrs trying to do this well. Congrats 🎉

Thanks so much for the encouragement Jupiter! I do plan to create more videos like this in 2022. Keep an eye for the second episode from the Big Bend region going live on Tues.

Really enjoyed this video Peter! We’ve stumbled upon your videos a few times previously and just now subscribed to your channel. Hubby and I just got our new Revel a few weeks ago. So excited to be going on our first real trip (other than driving it from San Diego back home to Reno) . . . Heading out for a 10 day trip to Utah and possibly Idaho for some skiing. Definitely will check out the places you highlighted in this video on future trips. Keep up the good work!

PS . . . I was chuckling at how often you said “we” made it and “our” camp etc and then you were questioning yourself because you aren’t with your family in this video . . . Well my thinking is it’s because the Revel has its own personality and you were referring to you and the Revel 😄 we named ours Miss Sophie 😄

Yes, I felt silly when I realized I was saying that. It's a hard habit to break as I'm not used to traveling solo. Thanks for watching!!!

need some salsa fresca for that burrito ... Nice trip . I'm planning a trip down Texas way but Boca Chica and South Padre Island is where I'm headed but I might spend a day or two elsewhere in the state when I'm there in March . I have a 4Runner with a RTT and all the other stuff .

Sounds like a great time. Your RRT 4Runner will love the Big Bend area too. Thats a perfect setup for exploring that region.

I would appreciate your help to find summit product Revel roof rack accessories. I could not find any options with my internet search. Needs raised cross bars and fairing for my Winnebago BOLDT.

I haven't watched you for awhile. I was wondering if you are now solo. I hope this isn't to personal.

Nope, I'm still traveling with my family. But we do have to go different directions occasionally with an internationaly competitive kayaking daughter and me doing my photography assignments all over the place. But even when we had a house I cherished these solo trips exploring the west. Really great for personal development and pushing my creative vision. I also cherish the times we explore as a family on a regular basis.
