Kids telly nowadays cannot compare to the brilliance of Postgate. Way before the tinerweb and youtube let you watch stuff like this, I asked for a Bagpuss compilation video for my 21st birthday, I love it so much.
My entire childhood is stored on a 60-minute VHS of Bagpuss. It's almost become a habit to watch this intro every month or so - It's just so good, and so nostalgic. It gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside.
Even to this day I still like to say 'heave, heave' in a squeaky voice when I have to lift/drag heavy objects. Thank you, Oliver, for fond childhood memories of Bagpuss and the church mice.
British stop-motion animations and cartoons are one of the keys to comfort. Grab a cup of tea, bang this on, and not even the end of the world could stop you from being at peace.
R.I.P OLIVER. you will be sadly missed. you were apart of my childhod and helped me to grow up. you brought smiles to millions and millions of children in the 70's. my heart goes out to his family.
For anyone interested in all things Smallfilms (Bagpuss, Clangers, Ivor the Engine...) there's an exhibition opening at the V&A Museum of Childhood, London in March 2016 - October 2016. Find out more here: www.vam.ac.uk/moc/exhibitions-and-displays/the-clangers,-bagpuss-and-co/
It was a wonderful show on many levels. Others have pointed to the compassion, kindness, simplicity and love demonstrated within the show, but I will point to something else. It also concerned intelligence and wisdom, where neither were alienated from any of the other qualities listed. Fictional characters who are smart are too often distant, and fictional characters who are simple and compassionate are often also represented as stupid.
I am a 37 year old Englishman that now lives in Australia. Judging by all the comments i guess Oliver has passed away, i looked it up and it's true. I feel that Oliver was a part of my childhood, i as you all have lost someone dear to me. A little more of more childhood slips into the ether as i age, how sad. RIP, you were a wonderful person and i'll miss you so much.
Wonderful, I love the picture at 1.10 . If more programs where put back on tv like this instead of action packed stuff with guns and fighting etc, then children could venture back into the world of innocent imagination.
@petesapwell Hahaha!!! I agree. My son is ten, when he was little I bought all the old stuff I liked on DVD to watch with him. Pipkins, The Flumps, Charlton and the Wheelies and Mr Ben. Jamie and the Magic Torch was my favorite by far! Brings back such happy memories!
Poshswagger, It's sad, things like this arent on anymore, and most of the programmes now are modernised. I was born in 1986 but the programmes bring back lots of memories and pleasure. If there was a way to bring those happy times back it would be great, but sadly there isnt
i baught the pagpuss dvds the other day for me mum i watched them with her and there well fun and inoccent! now we have some right rubbish stuff on cbbc. im 19 by the way! RIP Oliver
I remember growing up watching this, when the six week holidays where full of summer fun, summer was summer and winter was winter, golden days i wonder where they all went.
Sad news, Oliver Postgate died aged 83 this week. Oliver was the creator of Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine, The Clangers & Noggin the Nog. Spare a thought for him, cos when Oliver goes to sleep all these great programmes go to sleep. And all because Emily loved him...
Those pictures of the houses at 0:21 seconds and the ones at 0:26 (of the little children); can anyone tell me whether they're famous photographs of some sort ? And if possible, where were they taken ?
And the ending....... " but emily loved him " brings tears to my eyes and I'm a builder aged 39. My daughter is called Emily by the way... and now I'm filling up just writing this!! Wuss eh ?
dis reminds me of my nana (rip) nd grandpa (still alive) but wen me nd ma sis wer little we used 2 go 2 derr house nd dey had dis on video, ino dis wz b4 our time, but dis is a classic nd awl of ma mates av seen bagpuss, so i fink dis is gna b 1 of dem known nd membarrd tv shows!! like blue peter, but bagpuss is like 10 times betaa

Hello all Bagpuss lovers. Edam3000, the pictures are of Peter Firmin's house... I have to admit to all of you I have painted Bagpuss on my bathroom wall, why? because the wall was there and now my Grandchildren go to the Bagpussbathroom every time they come to see NannySal and Grumpy, I love BAGPUSS and I'm 46 now, I first saw BP when I was about 6.
The little girl Emily was actually co-producer /creator Peter Firmin's daughter, and it used to really piss her off having to dress like a Victorian girl!
@MALCBAGGIE yup and it was Peter Firmin's (Co-creator) daughter Emily who was 'Emily' The incantation to awaken Bagpuss was: Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss Old Fat Furry Catpuss Wake up and look at this thing that I bring Wake up, be bright, be golden and light Bagpuss, oh hear what I sing Only 13 epsisodes made that originally ran from February-May 1974 A true classic :o)
@keith4291 Because it brings back your memories of when you were a child, a time of innocence, being safe with your family, no bills, no work, and now those days are gone.
Takes me right back to childhood memories. BAGPUSS! Now aged 53, it seems like a different planet!
Kids telly nowadays cannot compare to the brilliance of Postgate.

Once upon a time, not so long ago....I remember watching Bagpuss, and I still love him now even though I'm nearly 40. Thanks for this.

British stop-motion animations and cartoons are one of the keys to comfort. Grab a cup of tea, bang this on, and not even the end of the world could stop you from being at peace.
No guns, no fast music, no shouting, screaming, swearing.
Pure magical innocense. Thank goodness you can buy it on DVD.
It was great seeing this again on BBC Four tonight!
R.I.P OLIVER.

Opening credits filmed in Horrabridge, Plymouth/Devon. I loved this as a young girl. Never thought I would end up living near there.

Yes, it's at the end and it IS "but Emily loved him".
bagpuss is the shane warne of kids telly.
unique - brilliant - unconventional - and slightly weird.
and funny, too, as well as compelling...
Luv Bagpuss and da Toad with banjo ( John Faulkner :-D )
I've just watched the full titles elsewhere and they don't say "but Emily still loved him". It must be at the end.
Omg, memories.....
Did you know the little girl Emily was actually co-producer Peter Firmin's daughter?
