Convection Current Demonstration

  • Convection currents are the result of uneven heating of water or air. These currents create some of our wind, weather, and ocean currents.
In order to demonstrate convection currents I first froze blue water into ice cubes. I next used red food coloring to create red water and then heated this water. When I place these objects in water you can see how the different temperatures of water flow.
The hot water flows upward and the cold blue water flows downward.
Materials for this convection current demonstration
    Red and blue food coloring
    Ice cube tray
    Bottle for the hot water
Fish tank or any large clear container

This is the best example of convection current and very easy to understand

Convection currents also happen underground in the mantle.

How does the blue water gain heat after it has fallen to the bottom of the ocean (tank)?
I understand hot water rises, and as it cools, it falls back down, but how does the cool water get warm again to creat the cycle?

As it falls, the cold water get closer to the heat source (the bottle).

Brian Andrews in reality the sun would heat the ground then the air nearest to the ground would heat up. These are called thermals the hot air rises cools off then sinks. If you ever see a small puffy cloud it’s because of this. After that hot air full of moisture get up to the cold region it cools and releases all of its moisture in the forum of a cloud ☁️

Because as the the warm air rises it leaves a space for the cold water to flow into like draft in a fireplace.

One of the 4 'Laws of thermodynamics' says 'heat always flows toward cold'
      Look up those laws. 🤓

You just had to cool the blue water dye. By icing it, you are making it difficult to observe convection currents.
