The applause was provoked by the producers to try and get the band to stop. You can tell that the drummer knows exactly what's going on from that smirk at 5:30! As Jools introduces Elbow, they were STILL going, right up until Elbow start their song. The show overran, and Newsnight began a few minutes late.
