    My first ever community show was Bye Bye Birdie during the summer between my junior and senior years of high school a town away from where I lived.. I was teen ensemble and a shriner, my theatre teacher was Mr. MacAfee, Conrad used to go to my school and I knew his brother, and one of our adult ensemble members was the brother of our school's social studies teacher and taught music in another school. I made a lot of friends in that show and have a lot of fond memories.

    At least the previous version had Ann Margaret and the the antics of Paul Lynde as her irascible dad. 'Kids I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!' My mom had the soundtrack to that version of 'Bye Bye Birdie'. The studio version of Birdie's songs 'Sincere' and 'One Last Kiss' were really good. The latter was cut down on film. Looks like they made the soundtrack with the intent to sell records but it was another one of those WTF moments.

    I just think Dick Van Dike's Albert is a lot more likeable, and I see how the writers of the 1963 movie had to change a lot of stuff about him in order to make him more sympathetic (both taking a lot of stuff out and adding a lot of stuff).

  • @dmnemaine
    @dmnemaine 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I thought this adaptation was better than the 1963 film adaptation only because it sticks closer to the original Broadway production; but both adaptations have their problems. One of the major problems is that the show's book is flawed, and you brought out that flaw -- not enough time is spent on the Albert/Rosie relationship to make them getting together at the end believable enough.

    I did know the movie existed before I watched this video (not before this video was made, but I hadn't watched it or seen it . . . watched the movie before it_) Y'all make me want to watch musicals or films with you,. I live down in Lake Charles, Louisiana, though. I'd totally do a live stream with y'all if possible, though. It'd probably get hilarious.

    I found this on DVD a few years back and impulse bought it, despite my never having heard of this adaptation before, and was surprised by how solid it is. I have to agree-- this seemed like a worse idea than it turned out to be in the end, and it doesn't have some of the problems of the Dick Van Dyke version.

    After the hit CBS had with "Gypsy" ABC decided to get in the game with this and it was not the ratings success they had hoped! There were 3 new songs written for this film. Alexander, Williams, & Daly each got a new song, On Bway and the original film Mrs Peterson didn't have a song, "A Mother Doesn't matter" was added specifically for Tyne Daly. This movie is on Hallmark Channel quite often. I'm surprised you weren't more knowledgeable as you are usually more trivia heavy in other videos.

    This is very different then the version I have on DVD, probably because this one is actually the stage version (oooh! Burn)
    Also, generally in High School they just cast someone vaguely Spanish looking for Rosie, but you're right, it's weird for the movie if she's not actually Spanish because you know, as a movie they have the power to actually find a Hispanic actress.

    • @benjaminwambeke9458
      @benjaminwambeke9458 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ugh, One Boy killed me in this version. I'm playing Hugo right now, and this film took this really sweet song and just made it creepy with it's weirdly miscast Hugo and Kim and the weird faces they make and it's just uncomfortable, like "I can't say no" in the film version of Oklahoma
