Recently, I keep hearing people comparing Grand Seiko to Rolex, but I feel like the 2 are very different beasts. In this video we explore 4 reasons why we should stop making this comparison.

The thing I like best about GS is how they tend to stick with an overall very clean, elegant design, which allows their amazing dials to take center stage. They aren’t overly flashy or gauche. There’s an understated elegance to them that you can almost miss at first glance, and they need to be examined before you can appreciate how truly impressive they are.

@@WatchCrunchOfficial An honest assessment. What you're getting is more viewing time, which allows you to see planned effects as they become clear.
If you visit a Japanese garden you find such planned effects everywhere. The same applies to their architecture. See enough of that and you'll become sensitized to that kind of thing. So, it becomes very important when the underside of one watch hand is reflected on a lower watch hand with no distortion but with less light. The endless ways the hands and indexes reflect light become a source of pleasure, as does the interaction between dial texture, amount of light, and warmth or coldness of that light.
These effects are very important to the aesthetic. GS uses certain hands repeatedly because all the effects are understood to the artist-designers. Also, every change in hand design will likely change their weight. The GS movements are optimized for very specific weights of hands.
In my view, GS is as much a precision engineering and industrial design company as a watchmaker. That's why a Spring Drive movement can exist in watches actually available to the public. It's not just the movement. For this moment to drive a watch, there must be extreme precision in the functioning of the other components. This watch sips barely any power. Mine was exactly on time over a five-day period, based on an atomic clock.

Yes I feel the same way Bubba I want to agree so bad with Dario but cannot afford to spend 5500 on a GS and see it depreciate 35%. Besides a Rolex Explorer, Submariner or Seadweller are considered classics. A Spring Drive GS is a great addition to any collection plus they are fun to have. But the questions is if you could only own one luxury watch under 9K (Retail) which one will it be. The answer most likely will be Rolex Explorer or Submariner. And let's not forget Omega Speedster or Aquaterra. However without talking availability Rolex is #1 Omega #2 GS Close 3rd. Own all if you can.

I wouldn't describe Grand Seiko as a "new kid on the block." Grand Seiko have been taking the Swiss to the Alpine woodshed for a long time. I think the problem is that we create this conception of Grand Seiko as comparable at all with the watches produced by Rolex (or other Swiss watch companies) in terms of brand image and popularity. The Grand Seikos from the 1960s to 1970s defeated the Swiss watch industry in movement accuracy, case design, and case finishing. But Grand Seiko has never had the brand cache that Swiss watch companies (like Rolex) have had, and that's why we can't compare them......at least not yet! Take popular branding out of the equation and Grand Seiko watches are far superior than ANY watch produced by Rolex.

    • @WatchCrunchOfficial

It's made of titanium (important for repeated dive use) with a black dial. Given that a real dive watch must be designed to withstand huge pressures, this kind of watch is generally heavy. Titanium reduces the weight needed. It's a very GS approach to the problem. And it's not a case of just adding a bezel and calling it a dive watch.

I had a watch fanatic get excited when he saw my 413. He didn't know what it was, at first, because he'd not seen the model, but its shimmering and color changes in different light obviously got his attention. He wears a graduation Rolex every day for sentimental reasons and also for its readability during surgery.
I showed the same watch to someone who was not in to watches and he just didn't get it.
I showed it to a jeweler who carries only a few Swiss lines (mostly selling diamonds), and he said he didn't get into Seikos, but the color was nice.
There you have it. Virtually no watch snob would dismiss this watch (the 415 is also superb), but others just don't seem to get it, unless they are given some viewing time. Am I upset? Not really. I'm happy to fly under the radar. But if you are not, this brand is not for you.

The Rolex is a mass produced robot production line million plus per year fashion watch whereas the GS is a work of artistic endeavour. Six months ago I would have agreed with you concerning Spring Drive. That’s still the first thing that comes to mind when I think GS. Problem is, I’m not crazy about the proportions of those watches, they simply don’t resonate for me as maybe they should.
After reading and looking, I would consider one of their quartz models, but for myself, it’s their manual wind watches form the Elegance collection that interest me most. That partly comes from developing an interest in slightly smaller watches. They are a bit more reserved, simply better proportions.
That doesn’t mean I couldn’t change my mind concerning a Spring drive watch, maybe if I found one at a great price, I’m not sure what it would take, but my mantra has become fit first, if that’s not where I want it, it’s simply something I admire from a distance for what it is and look for those components to resurface elsewhere. Otherwise, I’m buying impulsively.

OK had to drop this extra in. Let's unpick some of your points. By the way full disclosure I'm a Seiko fan boy. Not necessarily GS though I love it as a brand.
    1. History
Fact is Seiko predates Rolex, and by the time seiko (as GS) were making award winning movements Rolex was still casing movements from others. I love the way you said "introduced men's wristwatches" made me chuckle because of course no one can claim to have INVENTED men's wristwatches as that's nonsense. Blaise Pascal is rumoured to have worn his watch on his wrist. And indeed men's wristwatches increased in popularity from the mid 19th century when soldiers found it easier. Seikos place in history, with quartz and spring drive on the other hand is assured.
    2. Design
Another interesting one. Up until probably early 80s most Rolex watches used one case Design.. the oyster case. And yes they did "slap on a bezel" and call it a diver. They also increased water resistance as you need to. There is more Design innovation in the Seiko 5 series than all of Rolex lineup (which even now is essentially 2 case designs).
    3. Cache
I'm not sure when the proletariat became appropriate arbiters of haute horology. Ask any of your non-watch friends about FP or ALS. Go on 😃

If you have a link to the strap or some of your preferred straps, please share! Thanks and congrats on the piece!

Going through back catalog videos and find this. Yes Rolex has a fantastic history but so do many other Swiss brands, I have some vintage Omegas. My wonderful wife recently gave me a GS Hotaka Peaks GMT and I absolutely love it, the spring drive is a marvel and is what all watch brands should be aspiring to do, push horological development instead of just resting on what sells. To me GS is always pushing and exploring what can be done for dials, cases and movements, yes clasps could be better but I would rather see time/resources spent on dials and movements.

I'm a big Seiko fan but the shared design language amongst spring drive models just doesn't do it for me, and unfortunately like Max mentioned would only really go for a spring drive movement as I have a one watch per brand rule. Though I really do like the SBGM221, just wished it was a spring drive void of the power reserve indicator and had at least 100m WR, would snatch that forsure.

  • @ShiroKage009
    @ShiroKage009 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Rolex's design hasn't changed since the last time they came up with the Oyster case. It has been so stagnant for decades. It's an amazing design, but it's the same. Praising them for tiny adjustments to the lugs when they were already great is something I don't understand. I need to see some innovation, some new case shapes, more variety to their dial finishes, more complications, things like that. They don't even bother to try and finish their movements to show them with an exhibition case-back, whereas GS learned to showcase the movement by removing the big print for a couple of years now.
Comparing the two brands is inevitable when they have similar price brackets. GS wins hands down if the watch is on a strap. If it's on a bracelet, it'll come down to the bracelet because, if we're being honest, GS's bracelets are crap. The last few releases actually have decent bracelets, but that needs to be all their watches and not just a few before this becomes a non-issue.

Thank you! Most GS sports watches remind me a lot more of an Aqua Terra than any Rolex model. I prefer Rolex (like I can afford either lol) because they prioritize case thinness and bracelet execution where Seiko and GS do not. If a watch doesn't have 200m of water resistance and isn't a Chrono, it shouldnt be taller than 12mm, even better if it was less than 11.

I think it’s fair to compare the two companies, in fact everyone does it all the time and while the two brands are very different they’re both luxury watch makers. Is one better than the other? Not really, because that answer will vary from person to person, but Rolex is the most recognized watch brand in the world, so people who are spending thousands on a watch want to know that their money is being well spent, and how better to know this than by buying a brand that everyone knows. Design wise, and the culture of the two companies, are like night and day, and for me, I’d like to think that my watch is an extension of my personality, and to that effect I picture myself to be elegant, but humble and low-key. Needless to say, you can imagine which brand I prefer.
