@@RobertDIY What should I do I have a 2013 dodge charger police 5.7 v8 with only 53k miles I replaced the #5 coil. they changed the spark plugs at 48k according to carfax and looks like the replaced #5 injecto newer looking compared to the rest. They probably couldn't figure out the problem or didnt want to dump more money into it and that's probably why it got auctioned off. Any advice or suggestions? Should I get extended warranty and try getting them to fix something like that?
Hello! I’m trying to fix my own Mr2 that is misfiring. Check engine light is flashing... this looks like it is so very clear even to a girl like me that’s never tried to fix my own car can handle it maybe.. lol . I’m not giving up! I’m grateful! Ty
I’m a Mechanic, with over 27 years experience. Now I have a 2008 Chevy Impala LS 3.5 Flex fuel model. Now this thing has been kicking my but from day one. I checked the Coil pack, it was faulty. Replaced. It ran great for a day then again...the same code popped up again.checked spark plugs and replaced them just to be safe. I also checked the wires and they are also new. Before that I switched the spark plugs and wires just to make sure they are working properly. I also did a compression test and leak down test. Passed no issues. I checked the injector and it was given me a low signal reading. Replaced all the injectors cause with over 150,000 miles I figure it was time. Ran great for another day next day. Same code. Cylinder number 5. Now I have gone thru the entire check list including checking the fuel pressure. 49-50 PSI with out a drop. I’m out of options and am stuck. The only thing ai have not replaced is the spark plug wires but they seem to work perfect and look brand new. I’m at a lost...I also checked the plugs etc. Did I or am I missing something here??? This is so frustcause I know what I’m doing and have worked on cars for years...but this one is kicking my but for sure.
I have a new version of this video that has more show and tell: Trouble shooting a misfire, Code P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308
This guy is a great teacher. so simple but super educational. I've never heard such simple complete explanations of the entire engine operations and common problems throuout the motors fuel air and spark operations. Simple tricks to to make shot work of diagnosing common misfire related problems.
Thanks for the tips! I had a P0302 Misfire on Cylinder #2 on my 2003 Ford F150.My truck was shaking at 45mph and blew a service engine soon light on a big hill. I changed the spark plug and the coil pack. That was it, upon further inspection the old coil pack had a crack in it. I saved alot by doing alittle troubleshooting, also wanted to suggest to others that if you dont have a code reader to go to Autozone, they would be happy to read the code for you!
This was the most lucid explanation of misfire codes and means of troubleshooting them that I have come across. Thank you for taking the time to do this video.
Robert ! I have a 2002 ford Taurus I got for free im pulling a P0301 P0302 and a P0316 code could these misfires be fuel injectors I do smell fuel in my engine compartment sometimes
Thank you for explaining to the point and not skipping over an obvious a mechanic wouldn’t think to relay to someone trying to learn this stuff. Great video!!
Man so cool you replied. I am having an issue with my cylinder #3 misfire. Had it checked with autozones tool, more specific, telling me that it is the valve spring needed replacement. BUT they had the wrong mileage information so I'm thinkin cuz of that, the diagnosis was off? (crazy as it sounds) lol cuz I am actually sitting here right now cleaning the head valve cover and my coils all look perfectly fine. Of course, there could be a problem with the compression or release of the spring while motor running. I skipped the spark plug check because I have recently replaced them all within the last couple months. So, upon unmounting the fuel injector wire harness, I noticed that my fuel injectors slightly twist to the left and right. Is this normal? From your video I saw that the misfire could be the seals on the injectors. If that is normal, then my next test is compression I suppose. Any thoughts? 😁
Robert, Very informative and clear video. I just bought a used 2017 Ford Edge 2.0L turbo with 114,00 miles on it. It was running great... could not even feel or hear the engine running. Then just the other night I was taking it out and it was running fine until I had to give it the gas to merge onto the highway and it just started shaking and sputtering and running Very rough the check engine light came on and went off and came on again. I went to Auto Zone right then and there, a Very short distance from where this started happening, they put the check on and it came up with: PO332, knock sensor 2 circuit low input (Bank 2), Secondary DTCs, PO300: Random Misfire Detected, PO302: Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected, PO: Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected. I do not have a reputable mechanic that I can go to. What does all these codes mean.? The check engine light keeps going on and off. This was so sudden. I just got this car in Oct. Hoping you can help me.
Thanks, robert. i have a misfire on cyl #1 on my volvo 850 non turbo 1997, so this is very helpful. i've ordered parts for an ignition tuneup, but i'm not sure because i lose power, and run rough, and get eh light coming on with the p0301 code, and a flashing check engine light, but the problem only happens when the car is hot, after running for a while. seems weird. runs great cold. for the first hour around town. then starts to run rough, etc. it gave me codes for most of the cylinders first, not sure how long they had been there, but they have not come back. the one that keeps coming back is the p0301. anyway, thanks for the great video.
I think i have a bad coil. it's got white marks on both sides, and i can see a blue glow on the sides as well in the dark, so i'll replace its, and oem plugs, wires, cap and rotor while i'm at it, but i 'm pretty sure the coil is the problem. thanks so much for your vids. they have been a great help, and i'll let you know how it works out!
so. i replaced the coil, and i see no sparks in the dark, but the car runs the same, so i replaced the distributor cap and rotor, and still the same. i then swapped the spark plugs that were autolite platinums for bosch platinums, and bingo, problem gone! amazing how sensitive the motor is to the plug type. .. a function if high compression engine? don't know, but the cylinders average about 200lbs, so i guess that's pretty high for a gasser. still have more issues with the car, but wanted to thank you again for your help, robert! you are a real benefit to everyone with one of these cars!
I have a 2003 Nissan Maxima and I keep getting the PO300 code I changed the intake gasket, I changed the O2 sensor that is in the front of the car connected to the cat closest to the oil pan, I have changed the crank sensor and I put in new plugs twice and all three plugs on the fire wall side are black again so I'm lost, first I was thinking it was a ground of some sort but I can't find that, the car was running just fine then coming home from work it just would not perform it was like it just lost power under acceleration Oh and I forgot I changed the #3 coil that was the first thing I did as I got a code telling me the misfire was #3 coil, any help you can give I would love. Thanks Charles
I had did all those changes it ran great for a week then boom on the way home it just lost power under acceleration I was still able to drive it back home it had been sitting now going on 2 weeks I just can't figure it out, I did once have the PO420 code so I changed the sensors mentioned in the original description all the plugs on the firewall side were black and they were new not even a week old so I got new ones same result and they never seen the road only missing when I press the Gas about 3k on the engine
Robert, I have give you a very big thanks for making this video cuz without you I wouldn't have been able to pinpoint exactly what my car was having issues with. I knew cylinder one was misfiring but beyond that I wouldn't have figured out that it was just a coil. Excellent video. Subscribed & liked! Again, THANK YOU. Saved me a ton of money
So I called the Mazda dealership (putting it off because I know how much they charge $$$) and just to hook up the code reader they wanted $99.99 and of course told me that this would go to the fixing of the car. Like that would appease me in some way ?? Anyhow I am on google or youtube all the time whether it be doctor related or car related as DIY pays off sometimes. I am so very thankful that you put this video together as I am still reluctant to take my car to the dealership and charge me mass amounts of money to fix something I can do myself. Anyhow, I thank you Mr. Robert I really appreciate this video and I hope to get my 2005 Mazda 3 running great again as I have 220K miles on her but I have taken good care of her and will continue to. God Bless you and yours. Be well.
Excellent thorough video. I wonder if there are any statistics that show the probability of what specific problem causes a P0301/2/3/4/5/6/7/8 type code? For example: spark plug causes this code 20% of the time, or possibly 60% of the time. Likewise for the coil, and other possibilities. I know this would likely be different for different vehicles, but a general probability over all vehicles would be nice to have.
This is one of the best well explained videos I have seen so far. Love the way you went step by step. At 100k the Ford Sports track 6 cylinder started running rough. So I put new wires plugs and changed the oil air gas filter. Ran much better. Except at take off. It would sputter and shake. Sometimes completely stall out. After 10 to 15 min of sitting she would start up and run fine. Took it to a auto parts store and they put it on the machine and found nothing. No engine light or anything. After appox. 5k miles the engine light came on. So I took it back. This time they got a trouble code p0303. And gave me a two page list of things that it could wrong. When I get some time I will try what you suggested. Thank You for posting. Thumbs up ! 10 starts ! Awesome video.
How your car knows that there is a misfire is that when a misfire occurs, engine speed will fluctuate. If the engine speed fluctuates enough to cause the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor signal to vary, the Engine Control Module (ECM) can determine that a misfire is occurring. Thanks for the straight-to-the-point video ;)
Sir, Just wanted to say a sincere thank you for taking the time out to educate us out here. Very well explained. Tomorrow will try these tips to diagnose Code P0302- Cylinder #2,o my son's 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer. HOOAH!
Thanks for the reply Robert. I added the bottle at the gas station. I had about 4 gallons of gas already when I added the bottle of injector cleaner then I added another 13 gallons to fill up my tank. The bottle said it works up to 15 gallons of fuel. I have a lexus is300 2001
Robert, the videos are informative, thank you. I have a 2003 Toyota Highlander(V6) with 145k miles. Past year the engine light has been on and the diagnostic trouble code report shows P0171/P0300/P0301/P0303/P0305.My mechanic had couple of tries to fix the misfire but the light comes back on.
Man this is awesome. I’m chasing a misfire on startup on cylinder 1 (occasionally #5) on my Land Rover LR3 and you did an awesome job explaining. Thanks!
Thanks for the input Robert, I added some lucas injector cleaner yesterday and filled up the tank and it idles weird when I accelerate and now I get codes p0300 and p0306.
Excellent you tube. My car in shop now for P0303. Lexus 300ES. Because it takes a ton of work to get to the coil for the 3 Cylinder I’m changing all 3 in the back.
tried everything that you said on my Dodge caliber which had a misfire cylinder 1 and I felt shake, loose of power, and smelling. I didn't use the compression gage just the swapping of the coils and that completely fixed the problem
Thank you Robert that was very informative post about a misfiring engine. It was a thorough diagnosis that can usually be missed even by a seasoned mechanic. I have subscribed to your channel. Great day
Good video. 1998 chevy S10, It's been missing and finally gave a misfire code for number 2. Doing the broom handle to the ear thing a very noticeable tick can be heard. I suspect a stuck valve. Any way the broom handle test it pretty good determining whether it's inside the engine or something outside. Hold the wooden stick to your ear and touch non-moving parts of the motor to narrow your search!
I have to really say this video is fantastic. You really know how to explain things. I'm not a complete noob when it comes to cars and stuff but there's still things I could learn and this is one of them. From a semi-pro stand point I can honestly say this is by far the best video on this subject. As I said b4 my 99 chevy s10 is throwing this code. I JUST bought the truck a few days ago and it does hesitate to start SOMETIMES and those times it does is prob when its misfiring. It does shake during idle but only when warming up from a cold start. I asked the previous owner when he had the plugs changed and he said 1 year ago but who knows if it was done properly or had a completw tune up. I'm wondering if a complete tune-up will solve this issue. It's not throwing 301-306 so not sure which cylinder it is as 3000 means random / multiple so I hope I dont have more than 1 misfiring. What do you think?
+Muilisx How many miles on the truck? I would probably do a full tune up and replace the fuel filter. Coil packs are probably due replacement. Also, it may have the wrong plugs in there. Sometimes people get sold high dollar iridium plugs and the vehicle has trouble running on them.
William C, I could NOT reply to your post. You must have some kind of setting permitting that. The short answer is no. It can cause the spark plug wire to malfunction but not effect compression. The spark plug treads seal the cylinder area and the oil leak would be above the threads. What kind of car do you have?
Robert, I have a volvo 2004 s40 t5 2.5 turbo. I'm have intermittent miss fire that isnt trip the cel. I took it to autozone and attached it to there scanner and got the p0303 code. I notice the problem most when I first run the car prior to halfway on my temp gauge. I'm going to look at the spark plug and coil but just thought I would pick your brain. I love your videos and thanks for helping us out.
How the he computer identifies a misfire is the signals from the crank angle sensor and/or cam sensor pick up the very slight slowing of the crankshaft when the misfire occurs (no power is produced from the misfiring cylinder). The ECU knows the crankshaft position and which cylinder was supposed to fire at that exact time and registers the error code and flashes the MIL if the misfire occurs a set number of times in a given period of time.
You are very thorough. I have a 2014 Ford Fusion. It quit while driving after 100 miles of driving. This shop put a high pressure fuel pump on it & new plugs after diagnostic. It started & ran for 6-9 seconds. He shut it off. I sent it to the place where I got the car. They found contaminated gas. They dropped tank & cleaned lines. It's running but when I accelerate rapidly, I get engine light p0301 code. I told them to check gasket for leaks b4 it left shop. What would you recommend? Just broke & disputed at this point. Sorry so long of explanation !!!
I pulled code & it said misfire cylinder 1... With the fresh plugs from beginning would it have fouled out that quickly? I get no engine code at all until I get on it & then I start to get the hesitation/hickup!
Very good video you done a great job. I have a 97 corolla 1.8 code P0304. I replaced plugs and wires still misfiring. Im thinking dirty or bad injector. Can U give me some help. Thanks
Check compression before you start tearing into the injectors. This new video shows it better. Trouble shooting a misfire, Code P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308
Very informative and solid video presentation. I never seen anyway so intellectually captivating. You are a teacher for sure. You that said I would like for you to help me with a big problem. Jeep liberty 2008 130k miles. Within a week I changed due to failure Fuel pump in tank Water pump. Been getting for 1 years check engine light for p0302 misfire. Changed out 3 times coil, plug. Still getting fault code. Changed crankshaft position sensor didn't help. Add injector cleaner no help. Did compression test all 6 cylinder good 130psi. Did spark test all good.. I am frustrated beyond belief. About to order fuel injector
Chunky Father You can purchase a fuel injector pulse tester to see if the injector is firing properly. I would actually swap the injector with another location before replacing it. Are you running OEM plugs?
Shake a little than stops, shakes again so forth.. gas mileage went from 310mpt to 230mpt. I 'll try the swap on Monday or Tuesday when AutoZone has them in stock. If figured if bad I could replace it there. This truck has given me so much heartache. Transmission went, right head gasket, fuel pump. Crack window. Ac compressor, heater core blew. Brake caliber froze shut. You name it
been getting a low oil pressure light when idle. I have checked oil level and it's good. Change oil regularly. Last week I changed oil pressure switch. No help
Hi Robert, great video, easy to understand!!! I have a question about my 2000 300M Chrysler. Seems to overheat at higher speeds and when I slow down engine recovers to a normal temp...Also, heat only ever comes out at a luke warm temp. Thanks so much, Jack Higgins
you mention at 05:30 your car on a tilted road causing misfires, I've been parking my car for several months on a hill, hardly using the car, and now I am getting multiple mis-fire codes, 300 through 304, could it be simply not parking on a flat surface and not regularly using teh car causing this? THANK YOU so much for this video, SO helpful..!
I have a 1997 chevy venture with a misfire on number 2. I have replaced plugs and wires and even checked the coil packs and even check the ignition module. Can a certain brand of plugs be the culprit?? Heard Bosch plug weren't very good.
Hi loved the video,I have a 2003 jeep liberty 3.7litre V6 its missing on the #1,3,6 cylinder,it idles rough .the compression has been checked thats good .but its still not running right . going to check the spark plugs next.if that doesn,t work should the next thing we check be the injectors. and could the 02 sensor be causing this as well.
What is "GOOD". You should have the numbers. People always say that but don't have the numbers. If it has over 100,000 miles, it likely needs the coil pack assembly. Those go out after a while.
Hi Robert. My 1994 2.3L t5 Volvo estate does not have an OBD port....I took the panel off by the cigarette lighter.... but no luck there. Looked up under the dash found nothing. In the e go e bay there is nothing. Would it have a different port?
Hi, Robert. Great video as always! Quick question: do you have to do anything special when connecting the OBD-II scanner? When I connect to mine (2000 Volvo S70 GLT) it trips the immobilizer, preventing me from being able to turn on the engine. I have to pull the fuse (#4) to get it to start again. Thanks!
Ok...I have a 2007 Ford Taurus that has a misfire on cylinders 4, 5 and 6 AND a random misfire. Changed plugs, wires, and ignition coil...so would this be the fuel pressure regulator or the MAF sensor??
hi. question i have a 03 suburban. i put flex fuel in it the other day and all of a sudden i am getting error po308 and it flashes.. my truck is driving rough. also not sure if related but my air seems to only want to work good now only when driving /giving gas. is that code the reason more than likely
ethanol sucks up water like a _________. Get some gasoline water remover that pours in the gas tank. The auto parts boys will know what you are asking for. Ethanol sucks because it sucks water out of the air. A lot of it. Ethanol has done billions of dollars in damage to out gasoline engines.
Hi..I have a 2013 Fusion that disengages the A/c circuit if the engine misfires enough to lose Acceleration mainly on uphill grades. Soon as the demand for power decreases the a/c clutch engages and normal cooling follows shortly after. God bless
If i have a misfire in cylinder 3 is it most likely a spark plug?? I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima and getting to anything requires a lot of work so getting a precise answer would be nice
LOL, it's called trouble shooting. I can't help that Nissan decided to make it impossible to get to the plugs. I know what you mean, I helped one of my neighbors pull plugs on his '99 Maxi. You have to check things to figure out what is bad. Those motors are very strong, my neighbor has about 350,000 on his. When he was having misfire issues it was because his wire was bad at that plug because oil was leaking past the valve cover into the spark plug well.
Not very dangerous, it can do more damage to the car. Have you tried to check anything to see what the problem is? Have you gotten the code reset to see if the problem comes back? Lots of people drive with a misfire. The best thing to do is try to figure out if it is still missing. If so, disconnect the fuel injector so the raw unburnt fuel doesn't damage the catalytic converter. It's a 6 cylinder, not sure how long it will run on 5 cylinders but some people drive for months like that with burnt valves, etc.
I just don't have the money right now to bring it to a mechanic so thanks for you input I really appreciate it.........I do know the problem disappeared for awhile but did come back eventually where my car was shaky......hopefully it can run a few more months
You mentioned to pour a little oil down the spark plug hole to test if the compression increases, are you referring to regular motor oil? Or what kind of oil? My cylinder two is misifiring
Wow! I was so impress on this gentle man's knowledge and explanation. Thank you Sir I have appreciate all your knowledge I sent it to my Fiance after hours of my explanation. :)
I have a 2005 lincln ls and I'm getting po300 & p0302 code when I lift the Hood i can hear air coming from one of the hoses I'm trying to find any help that can help me diagnosis the problem to avoid costly repairs so any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
Marvin Holmes This video is "show and tell". Not sure I can do any more than that. - Trouble shooting a misfire, Code P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308
Hi Robert I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra we went to auto zone and they gave us a read out for the codes on my car. The two codes were P0304 and P0174. We replaced the all four of the spark plugs and cleaned the air-intake valves and the MAF sensor. My problem is that the car still is running rough. The RPM's on the car are running faster than the MPH's. It wont accelerate over 30 MPH and the RPM gauge goes well over 4000 or more when I give it gas. I don't know what else to check for on my car as far as it goes for making the car accelerate.
Terry King Check the codes again. Sounds like a transmission problem which will not show up on most scanners. You could also have a clogged catalysis converter.
Can I rely on OBD data to find out the right time to change spark plugs? If I change "old" spark plugs based on the Toyota maintenance sheet, they look like new.
Very good video! I have issues with my Ram 1500 having a #4 cylinder misfire. I took out plug, cleaned it, put it back in, and test drove. The idiot light did not come back on, but my truck chugged intensely between 40-45 mph. Once past that speed or before that speed, the truck runs fine. Your thoughts on this to help my limited mechanical experience would be super helpful. Thanks!
+wannabeangler What year is the truck? It can be anything. The light will tell you. Have the codes read and see if any are pending (not giving the light yet).
I didn't figure I had to mention the codes since the video pertained to the misfire codes. My mistake. Curious about one other thing, do happen to be in the Tidewater area? Your accent sounds a local good ole boy from York Co.!
Hey ive been watching your shows you have posted on youtube and they are very easy steps to follow I have a 2000 volvo s40 im trying to install new conecters that plug into the coil pack the old conecters keeps sliding out and the wire keeps coming out a lil do u have any videos for that
I would really appreciate if you can send me your email address that way I can send you a picture of the wires . Im not a real mechanic I been taking care of mycar just by watching your videos. Thank you
awesome i found out my wire on my fuel injector is bad on cylinder 1 but i wish i watched your video a long time ago because i have changed my wires, plugs, fuel injectors, coil and pcv valves lol thanks for the video
Hey Robert, thanks so much for your videos! They are awesome. I just bought a 850 AWD, worked great but now a have a misfire and smoke coming out of the tailpipe, i ordered the PCV kit and new spark plugs beforehand, is that going to fix the issue? I was wondering where you got your little code reader, i can’t seem to find it anywhere. Thanks so much in advance Bests
+RobertDIY Just to clarify, when you say to "clear the code" after replacing the spark plugs you mean to turn the check engine light off and wait to see if it reappears?
Good video Robert I have a 06 Malibu with a p0300 multiple random misfire. It's also sluggish under load such as going up hill I've changed plugs, plug wires and coil pack ( it's a single coil assembly for all 6 cylinders) fuel pressure is within spec. Replaced a clogged cat on the front bank .. Rear bank cat reads good on my obd2 reader. I doubt it's a burnt valve since its multiple and random. Any ideas on a potential cause?? I'm a decent wrench monkey but diagnosing modern cars is my kryptonite
P0303 code seems to appear Alot. I have great compression, new coils and NGk plugs. Had a coolant sensor failure, replaced it. Car still shakes at idl. Only when in reverse does the car lose power while backing....??? Idle sensor?
I have a dodge charger 2008 and it feels like there is a miss fire with everything you said about the shaking when in idle. P306 was the code. Question is what should i be paying or estimate of this type job being done and should i have to replace all coils or injectors depending on the problem? I would appreciate it a bunch.
Cmarv BlacChe How many miles are on it? Has the spark plug ever been replaced? That code says that #6 cylinder is missing. So, I'd start with changing that plug, where ever it may be. Shops generally charge $90 per hour, even when changing 1 $8 spark plug. That may due it but if not, they have to progress down the troubleshooting trail. If you have a valve problem, it could cost you a LOT more than $98. - th-cam.com/video/Sg7iFytxfzQ/w-d-xo.html
I'm hoping my problem is the ignition coil But its hard to test the one on my 2011 Chevy Aveo since its all one piece over the spark plugs,.. mine doesnt have wires except to the computer box. Diagnostics came up cylinder 2 misfire. Car only has 51k miles, changed the plugs however the old ones seemed fine, no oils or anything on em, compression was fine. check light came on today and rpm gauge ran high at higher speeds, car runs on half speed and sputters rough now after today, getting an ignition coil tomorrow hoping it fixes the problem. Over the years had some of the same issues, car wouldnt start time to time on rare occasions and lights tend to dim going uphills and idle a little rough.
Yeah only ended up being the ignition coil as far as i could tell,.. pretty simple fix since its one piece, checked the diagnostics twice, no other errors came up.
i have a land rover freelander with 85 k mille and i have chrck light engine p0304 and p1300 and p0301 and when i accelerate it hesitate what you think i should start with
1999 Altima , first it was like the clutch was slipping, then I cranked it up and it started running rough and the service engine soon like came on. went to autozone and the hooked the computer to it . code p03302,p0325,p0302,p0744 came up. where do I begin?
Hey Robert I have a question, my 96 Ford Escort has two misfire codes, p0302 and p0303, I want to know what are the things that might be wrong? ie the fuel pump. Its helpful so that I can show it to my dad who doesn't speak an inch of English so we can both work on it. Thank you for your time.
The video tells what to look for. This video is more show and tell: Trouble shooting a misfire, Code P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308
Hi, Robert! You are a wonderful teacher... I am hoping you can help me... I have a 2003 Ford Taurus, with 190,3++ miles. Service engine light was flashing along with rough idle, and discovered from AutoZone's scan that I had a P0304. With basic tools, did a complete tune up, and went back to AutoZone for another scan. Results were P0304, still, along with the cam sensor. Replaced cam sensor, disconnected, then reconnected battery. Service engine light went off: however, the car is running more rough than before, along with a difficult acceleration. Any advice??? Thank you for your time...
You need to go through the steps in the video, one of which I believe is the compression test. The compression test is quick and easy, takes about 10 minutes or less once you have the gauge. Pull the plug, disconnect the fuel source, disconnect the ignition source, and crank the motor. If compression in that cylinder is good, move on to other test, like checking fuel injectors, etc.
99 acura tl has misfires in 5 cylinders and multiple misfires. also car starts shaking when I turn it on but 20 seconds later it runs fine. ive changed the fuel pump twice but the fuel pumps were from the junk yard. could it be the fuel pumps cause they are from the junk yard?
Yea I watched the video. I changed the spark plugs, the main relay. It's been a work in progress but I haven't changed the ignition coils. I doubt all ignition coils could be bad and cause misfires in nearly all cylinders, and multiple of random misfires. Also, I was driving back from school on the freeway and it jerked and the check engine light came on. I got a p1259 code which is the vtec malfunction but idk if I should the whole solenoid or what is cause the malfunction. Any tips to see if the ignition coils are still good?
Great Video, my problem is I get P0302, on cold start car runs good after going 60 mph or more 'something' cause misfiring and when I slow down can feel vibrations. However if I stop the car and restart the vibrations are gone and feels like engine running smooth. All breather hoses were replaced and also relay that is used for 2nd cylinder, however still same problem. Dont understand why the problem is cleared on immediate restart?
The rough idle started a few months ago, i replaced all spark plugs. I had a vacuum leak in the intake manifold, and fixed that as well with a new one. Wires were also replaced. I had this same issue on a 01 Deville, never resolved the problem and had to sell it.

I'm a disabled 64 yr old female..do I need to let garage put ,y truck on machine? to diagnose why I have a code p0302? Will their machine be able to narrow it down the cause without too much expense? Auto Zone put their small tester on my 2006 Dode Ram.it has 92,000 miles on it.
Hey Robert I have a 01 lexus is300 and had code p0306 mifire cylinder 6 and when I added some injector cleaner it went away but now I get code p0300. What could it be?
Mrlakers0834 P0300 is a general misfire code that the car has not determined which cylinder is misfiring. I would recommend running injector cleaner through the tank for the next 2 fill ups, run the tank down low between. How old are the spark plugs? - th-cam.com/video/Sg7iFytxfzQ/w-d-xo.html

i have one kia sorento 2004 an i have 3 code p0300 p0302 and p0305, i change the bobbin, the wire`s the spark plug, clean the injector, check the pressure of the fuel pump and is ok what more can check....
need help with an evaporative issues. Check engine light is on I believe there is a clog somewhere it happened after fuel pump was replaced and now the fuel gauge is not accurate.
Robert, your computer picks up misfire by monitoring crankshaft speed. As engine misfires, crankshaft speed changes. Your CKP picks up speed change and correlates speed change to position indicating which cylinder is malfunctioning
My 2000 honda accord has a P0302 misfire. I swapped spark plugs, injectors change the distributor, cap and wires but the code didn't move, same cylinder. Please help me.
How many miles on the car? (and engine?) You should do a compression check. That'll check the condition of the rings and valves; my guess is you'll find #2 below limits and the others low. # 2 was just the first one to wear out but the others may not be far behind.
dude i never heard someone talk so clear and to the point . extremely informational.

ECU, ECM, Whatever they call it for that vehicle is probably bad.

Ignition parts is likely what you need.
Glad you got it sorted out.
Thanks
Charles
Charles McGowan Jr. Hi Charles. Is the car hard to start hot or cold? How many miles does the car have?
8th miles, it starts right up no issues hot or cold it just has no power under acceleration it will move but misses like crazy
Are you running 91+ octane? How many miles does the car have?
The car has 81k, it always gets 93 octane never had anything less than the 93 octane
I love how he keeps every little detail in perspective for advances to novice. Following now for 5 yrs.
Thank you very much for watching.
Robert, I have give you a very big thanks for making this video cuz without you I wouldn't have been able to pinpoint exactly what my car was having issues with. Be well.

+The TRUTH Thanks for watching and for your kind words.
I know this would likely be different for different vehicles, but a general probability over all vehicles would be nice to have.
owners neglecting maintenance.

Excellent description of trouble codes (random misfires) in question along with excellent diction...I'll be back for more diagnostic tips...
Thanks for watching
How your car knows that there is a misfire is that when a misfire occurs, engine speed will fluctuate. If the engine speed fluctuates enough to cause the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor signal to vary, the Engine Control Module (ECM) can determine that a misfire is occurring. Thanks for the straight-to-the-point video ;)
Thank you for sharing.

Excellent you tube. My car in shop now for P0303. Lexus 300ES. Because it takes a ton of work to get to the coil for the 3 Cylinder I’m changing all 3 in the back.
Good call.
tried everything that you said on my Dodge caliber which had a misfire cylinder 1 and I felt shake, loose of power, and smelling. I didn't use the compression gage just the swapping of the coils and that completely fixed the problem

300*
+Muilisx How many miles on the truck? I would probably do a full tune up and replace the fuel filter. Coil packs are probably due replacement. Also, it may have the wrong plugs in there. Sometimes people get sold high dollar iridium plugs and the vehicle has trouble running on them.
+Muilisx th-cam.com/video/gkQxcP0yfEc/w-d-xo.html
+Muilisx th-cam.com/video/HM-WdfwKhZQ/w-d-xo.html
The truck has 90,000 miles but on the new engine. The original engine had close to 200k.
William C, I could NOT reply to your post. You must have some kind of setting permitting that.
The short answer is no. It can cause the spark plug wire to malfunction but not effect compression. The spark plug treads seal the cylinder area and the oil leak would be above the threads.
What kind of car do you have?
Robert DIY hey rob i have a p0302 misfire code on my 96 ford aerostar van i need help
Robert,
I have a volvo 2004 s40 t5 2.5 turbo.
Michael hamilton I would check plug and coil first. Maybe swap them with #5.
Thanks for sharing.
Could be a bad / fouled plug.
I pulled code & it said misfire cylinder 1... With the fresh plugs from beginning would it have fouled out that quickly? I get no engine code at all until I get on it & then I start to get the hesitation/hickup!

Water pump.
Yes
Good. Try the injector swap. Does the misfire happen randomly or continual? Does the car shake at idle?
Shake a little than stops, shakes again so forth.. gas mileage went from 310mpt to 230mpt. I 'll try the swap on Monday or Tuesday when AutoZone has them in stock. If figured if bad I could replace it there.
This truck has given me so much heartache. Transmission went, right head gasket, fuel pump. Crack window. Ac compressor, heater core blew. Brake caliber froze shut.

you mention at 05:30 your car on a tilted road causing misfires, I've been parking my car for several months on a hill, hardly using the car, and now I am getting multiple mis-fire codes, 300 through 304, could it be simply not parking on a flat surface and not regularly using teh car causing this?

Those go out after a while.
the compression test was 130 .and the coil pack was tested and every thing was good with that also.
Fuel, air, compression and spark. Not sure what those numbers are suppose to be but in my car 156 is the low end. How old are the plugs?
Extremely thorough! Thank you for the in depth explanation!
You are welcome.
Hi Robert. My 1994 2.3L t5 Volvo estate does not have an OBD port....I took the panel off by the cigarette lighter.... but no luck there. Looked up under the dash found nothing. In the e go e bay there is nothing. Would it have a different port?

moises clara Cool, still the same process.
Sounds like an electrical problem. If you have a 6 cylinder, 1/2 of the motor is knocked out. Check for a loose ground wire or something like that.
thanks for all those tips! Its really easy to follow step by step even for a french guy :)
Good, thanks for watching.
hi. question i have a 03 suburban. i put flex fuel in it the other day and all of a sudden i am getting error po308 and it flashes.. my truck is driving rough. also not sure if related but my air seems to only want to work good now only when driving /giving gas. is that code the reason more than likely
+HurricaneMelissa25 I doubt that the AC problem is related to the misfire.

Acceleration mainly on uphill grades. Soon as the demand for power decreases the a/c clutch engages and normal cooling follows shortly after.

That is normal.
When he was having misfire issues it was because his wire was bad at that plug because oil was leaking past the valve cover into the spark plug well.
how dangerous is it to drive the vehicle with this condition Robert?
Tools and new spark plugs should cost less than $60.
You mentioned to pour a little oil down the spark plug hole to test if the compression increases, are you referring to regular motor oil? Or what kind of oil?
My cylinder two is misifiring
Regular motor oil.

Wow! I was so impress on this gentle man's knowledge and explanation. Thank you Sir I have appreciate all your knowledge I sent it to my Fiance after hours of my explanation. :)
Thanks for watching and sharing.
Maintenance schedule.
I will when the weather gets better here, I'll post when i do! Thanks!

Hey ive been watching your shows you have posted on youtube and they are very easy steps to follow I have a 2000 volvo s40 im trying to install new conecters that plug into the coil pack the old conecters keeps sliding out and the wire keeps coming out a lil do u have any videos for that
No I don't. is something pulling on the harness? Can you add a little wire to the ones that are backing out?
I would really appreciate if you can send me your email address that way I can send you a picture of the wires . Im not a real mechanic I been taking care of mycar just by watching your videos. Thank you
My contact info is on my website which is on the end of all of my videos.
Ok thank u
Hello Rob, I get 2 codes P0102, and P0306 with low compression I hope it's not the valves.
I have a 02 bonneville sle
+89DrFunk how low is the compression? If it's under 60 psi it's likely a bad valve.
Can you fix my car? Excellent video. Easy to understand......no big technical lingo.
+mundl kalli Maybe. Thanks for watching.
awesome i found out my wire on my fuel injector is bad on cylinder 1 but i wish i watched your video a long time ago because i have changed my wires, plugs, fuel injectors, coil and pcv valves lol thanks for the video
Glad you found it and thanks for watching.
Thanks so much in advance

I have no idea what is causing the misfire. If you fix the problem then the misfire will go away.

+RobertDIY Just to clarify, when you say to "clear the code" after replacing the spark plugs you mean to turn the check engine light off and wait to see if it reappears?
+Belladonna_101 Yes.
+Robert DIY Ok, much thanks!
+will rodgers Man, it sounds like you are hitting it. How about the fuel filter? Any other codes? Sounds like a tough one.
sounds like u have a bad icm/ignition control module
+Antonio Pens icm is built into the coil
+Robert DIY the fuel filter is one assembly with the fuel pump
P0303 code seems to appear Alot. I have great compression, new coils and NGk plugs. Had a coolant sensor failure, replaced it. Car still shakes at idl. Only when in reverse does the car lose power while backing....??? Idle sensor?
must be a wiring issue or fuel supply.
Hey Robert diy I still get code p0300 and p0306. When I added the lucas injector cleaner my idle was weird.

You've outdone yourself again! Thanks got simplifying the mistletoes for is!
:) Thanks for watching.
That is low miles and age for a misfire, but it can happen anytime. Hope the coil pack fixes your issue. Shadd henkelman
Yeah only ended up being the ignition coil as far as i could tell,.. pretty simple fix since its one piece, checked the diagnostics twice, no other errors came up.
Very nice.
i have a land rover freelander with 85 k mille and i have chrck light engine p0304 and p1300 and p0301 and when i accelerate it hesitate what you think i should start with
th-cam.com/video/Sg7iFytxfzQ/w-d-xo.html
I have a misfire in 3 after new plugs and coil packs, any suggestions ? Guess I need a compression check
If it wasn't misfiring before, you probably have a issue with one of our new parts.
Robert DIY it was misfiring before too
1999 Altima , first it was like the clutch was slipping, then I cranked it up and it started running rough and the service engine soon like came on. went to autozone and the hooked the computer to it . code p03302,p0325,p0302,p0744 came up. where do I begin?
+illiad dowdy I guess I would start with the misfire codes. Also check the transmission fluid level as outlined in the owners manual.
+tony ramirez I doubt 3 fuel pumps will cause the same issue. What else have you done to solve your problem? Did you watch the video?
Yea I watched the video. I changed the spark plugs, the main relay. It's been a work in progress but I haven't changed the ignition coils. I doubt all ignition coils could be bad and cause misfires in nearly all cylinders, and multiple of random misfires. Also, I was driving back from school on the freeway and it jerked and the check engine light came on. I got a p1259 code which is the vtec malfunction but idk if I should the whole solenoid or what is cause the malfunction. Any tips to see if the ignition coils are still good?
Sounds like it could be that timing valve. Could also be a cam or crank sensor.
Not yet, it doesn't stall or hesitate when I drive it, drives a little rough but has good power when you gun it too!
Good morning
Good morning
Great Video, my problem is I get P0302, on cold start car runs good after going 60 mph or more 'something' cause misfiring and when I slow down can feel vibrations.
However if I stop the car and restart the vibrations are gone and feels like engine running smooth. All breather hoses were replaced and also relay that is used for 2nd cylinder, however still same problem.
Dont understand why the problem is cleared on immediate restart?
+Sanju Dabi Have you gone through all of the troubleshooting steps? - th-cam.com/video/Sg7iFytxfzQ/w-d-xo.html
My 98 Deville has a P0300 code. It doesn't say what cylinder. The idle is erratic as well not stable as it should be
How many miles since the rough idle started? How old are the spark plugs?
The rough idle started a few months ago, i replaced all spark plugs. I had a vacuum leak in the intake manifold, and fixed that as well with a new one. Wires were also replaced. I had this same issue on a 01 Deville, never resolved the problem and had to sell it.
Check compression.

What kind of motor is on it? I have the exact same problem with my mazda, and the general consensus is that its caused by my coil packs being bad.
If you have a general code that doesn't point to a specific cylinder, you may have a common issue problem, like a bad coil or low pressure fuel or something like that. I'm about to update this video to be a little more detailed and shorter. Hopefully it will help.
Huh? Did you watch the video? A machine won't diagnose it, a mechanic will.
I'm watching u n understandable. ? I have a pick Up truck 1994 nessan running nomal i open the distrebute cup there is dirty i cleaned it n put it back on it ran bad n Shaking like it wants 2 die. Please help what 2 do. How did i done wrong?
When was the last time you had it tuned up?
Thanks robert i bouth the truck 3 yrs ago had not done a touch 2 it acept the oil change regulares.
Random misfires codes and bad cat code? do I need a new cat to fix?
Im having the same problem....also the idle aory control valve keeps going bad

1998 toyota Sienna fuel injector misfire. after it reaches 30 to 40 mile/hour is just spotiers and shakes. Also it smells gasoline and at the stoplights is looks like the engine will stop working. Acceleration is bad. Do you think i have bad fuel injector? Which the code states that bad fuel injector.
Maybe P020x. I have no idea. You simply have to troubleshoot the problem.
i have one kia sorento 2004 an i have 3 code p0300 p0302 and p0305, i change the bobbin, the wire`s the spark plug, clean the injector, check the pressure of the fuel pump and is ok what more can check....
Compression.
Thanks i will go to check this
need help with an evaporative issues. Check engine light is on I believe there is a clog somewhere it happened after fuel pump was replaced and now the fuel gauge is not accurate.
+dru Coley What kind of car do you have?
Robert, your computer picks up misfire by monitoring crankshaft speed. As engine misfires, crankshaft speed changes. Your CKP picks up speed change and correlates speed change to position indicating which cylinder is malfunctioning
Interesting.
