This video is focused on writing skills, but what made me fall in love with Chazelle is his directing. He tries do make movies that feel like spectacles and I love that. The ending of La La Land and Whiplash are like watching fireworks for me, there is no dialogue and is just pure cinematic magic, you are only supposed to feel what is on screen. Another thing that he does and completely changed how I watch movies is, like you said in the video, his plots are rather simple. No crazy concepts like Christopher Nolan' movies. I feel like there is a lot of writers trying to come up with the most crazy and complicated plots nowadays, but forgetting to just try to do visual art. Chazelle is my main inspiration nowadays as I aspire to become not a writer or a director, but a true artist like him.

La La Land is about choosing to be true to yourself vs seeking external validation. I don’t think it’s about the cost of greatness. It seems like Mia learns to be her authentic self through her connection with Sebastian. Sebastian learns to care about what others like through Mia. It’s the balancing act of being authentic and being like-able.
Damien Chazelle is easily one of the best filmmakers of our times. All his works are masterpieces in their own ways, and it’s very exciting to see where he goes next

Hey Tyler I've been following you for a while now and I'm almost done with my first feature length screenplay and I was wondering what people thought of how I'm structuring it. I essentially divided it into 4 acts, where the traditional 2nd act is cut in half at the midpoint and then for each act I used Dan Harmon's story circle to drive the plot. I also added the antagonists motivations on each level of the story circle for each act. So I have 4 story circles to build my story. It's really making it very easy for me to visualize and write. Act 2 especially seems a lot easier to come together. I was wondering what people think of this method.

I'm catching up in your podcasts and just listened to episode 16. I have bad inferiority complex, not comparing myself to others, but to what I want it to be. I also have bad impulse control, which is good and bad. I don't do something I want to do to avoid work, but instead something I dont want to do, like a chore. At least that way I am still productive if I don't write haha. I don't think doing other things is bad because it provides inspiration, but when it gets out of control, like mine is, ouch.
Damian’s FIRST MAN, following LA LA Land, is literally the same in its Philosophical Conflict with everything Armstrong was put through mentally. Was perfect in Damian’s storytelling style and he just got to tell a true story with that one and man that ending Moon landing is just AMAZING.
Does your theme of the film and core philosophical question are to be same/similar/supportive? I think not every movie needs the philosophical question. May be its a directorial choice. Please let me know your opinion.
So I want to drop in here just to say, In my opinion this all should be applied only in your second draft of your screenplay but I cold hardly disagree that this is the reason why damien chazelle is successful in terms of story. He is successful because both these movies is based off him and writing the movie he put every emotion everypain to a script and that's why he's successful not because he has good character with "philosophical conflict" it's because he wants to tell a story and does so perfectly. Again just to wrap this shouldn't be what you should be thinking when writing a script its way to formulated and will lead you to a road of nothing. Instead go deep into why you're writing this story and how it can impact people.
