Alginate/polyacrylamide hybrid hydrogel has attracted intense interests in different fields, but the low tensile strength and stiffness limit its comprehensive application. In this hydrogel system, the alginate-cation network plays an important role. Thus, based on the unique structure of alginate and its special interaction with different metal cations, we designed a new method of introducing Calcium (Ca) ions to crosslink the alginate sufficiently, creating a stronger alginate network. As a result, the prepared hybrid hydrogel exhibits enhanced strength and stiffness, which may serve as a new way to develop stronger hydrogel. All these results showed that the resultant dual-cation (Ca+2) crosslinked hydrogel exhibits superior mechanical strength than that of single-cation (Na+) crosslinked hydrogel. This research may expand the scope of practical applications of this strong hybrid hydrogel in the load-bearing field.

Hi. Thank you for your video. I found some papers synthesis double network with acrylamide. They made the reaction under N2 protection. Is it important if we make the reaction without these conditions?
Hi, thanks for making this video.
Can I ask you about why vinylsulfonic acid monmer are used and what if TEMED is not used?
Vinylsulfonic acid is a hydrophilic monomer and increases the swelling capacity of the formed hydrogel. TEMED is a catalyst and enables the polymerization reaction to occur rapidly at low temperature.
Super nice video to explain the protocol! I wonder if the Ca2+ crosslink has any effect on the materials melting point? Have you tried heating the material up? Another question is if the material will degrade in soil / water over time. Cheers thanks!
Thanks. Crosslinking obviously has an effect on thermal properties. Crosslinking and thermal stability are directly proportional. such materials are biocompatible and do not biodegrade for many years.
@@polymerscope6881 appreciate the quick reply!Super useful!
Hi, thanks for making this video.
if you want to make a unified thick gel form as you've made from sodium alginate, is spraying calcium chloride enough or would it make it a gel only on the outer layer with this method?
Thanks. CaCl2 alone is not enough. It is necessary to use chemical crosslinkers.
Is it possible to make diy light Curable chemical or cement just like use for pcb solder mask ?
It is possible to use it as an additive, but the cost will be quite high.
what is the use of sulphonic acid? Heating at 60 degree is required in the initial step?
what is the use of sulphonic acid? Heating at 60 degree is required in the initial step?
During the 24 hr , do you leave it in the air or what?
Is there another material similar to vinylsulfonic acid ?
It would be better if it was closed to the air. any anionic monomer. For example acrylic acid, AMPS etc.
would it be possible to prepare the hybrid hydrogel from the polacrylamide available in diapers? thank you
Of course, they are made from sodium polyacrylate. There are detailed synthesis steps in the literature.
Hi, I want to make a sheet elastic gel with alginate, for example, a 1cm thick elastic gel
Yes u can do like this. th-cam.com/video/_sz0KkT603E/w-d-xo.html
you can help me
Sir will you brief the procedure stepwise
There is a detailed explanation in the video. If you want to search 'acrylamide-based stretchable hydrogels', there are many studies in the literature.
when to add calcium ions to the solution?
we don't add. If you add it, the alginate will gel.
Hello I need some help making hydrogels. Can i please contact you?
Yes of course.
For a better instructional video, wear some safety glasses.
