Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

Though Martin says Belle's in it strictly for the food, she truly seems to like hunting w/him. In fact, she truly seems to like Martin a lot. She appears to show him affection now & then.

My dear husband was a big big man. I did everything to cook properly for him. His arteries were plugged. Had no idea! He had all these tests at Emory University. I love this so much! The red-tailed hawk that I watch did not migrate. I get to watch it year round if i want. Since I broke my ankle in october, I missed a lot. I missed the eagles that come every year. They come to Higgins Point every year for the salmon.

At first, I had no idea what was going on. I thought maybe she was hunting for rabbits for you to take home to feed all the other animals. Now, I am assuming this was to let her do her natural thing.

Nope, they don't recognize it as any threat.
...and you should get a Pop Socket so you can more easily hold your phone. I think it would make your adventures with your phone, less cumbersome.

Absolutely beautiful demonstration of Harris hawk pack hunting behavior. Doesn't hurtat all that Belle is a beautiful healthy bird. I've watched a whole family/pack of 5 hunt a field I was bailing hay in.

As long as there’s internet access you can locate whatever but if you are out in the boondocks no internet access you hope to hear the jingle bells when the bird flies.

Are there any videos of Martin hunting with Scout? I did a quick search and didn't find anything... at least anything recent. I understand that this maybe something that must be filmed by Martin, as Scout doesn't like to hunt with others. Sure would like to see a video of that! Love watching you do what you do! Bought your book and gave it to my father for Christmas! :-) Karin
We don't have any videos of a Scout hunt. It's very difficult to capture as Scout hunts much differently and prefers to be only with Martin.
That looks like difficult terrain to hike. Who wins the battle as to when to stop, you or Belle? Is she frequently successful in a catch? Enjoyed the film. ‘I’m from PA & reminds me how diverse the terrain is in the us. Great job. Carole

I have a heart condition, and because of this I ask you, PLEASE PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!! I have been told too lose 30 lbs. You are way way more valuable to the world than I! Don’t cut your life short due to pork chops, of whatever 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 72 yrs old. You are frightening me to death in that heat!

It all varies, sometimes one sometimes far more
What kind of hawk is she? Coopers? With the exception of falconry, I find it repugnant the keeping of birds that should/could be living in nature. But like equestrian skills, falconry is an awesome ancient practice that bonds man with nature. Thanks for sharing because I know very little about this hobby. Really shows how smart they are.
This kind of feels like a stupid question, but if you were not wearing the glove, what would be the likelihood of you sustaining an injury from the talons? You always see people wearing a glove in falconry 99% of the time but is it really necessary? Predators usually show great control with the devices they use to kill with.
Belle is a Harris Hawk. The glove is for her comfort as it a better perch than a boney arm.
I want to go on record. I wanted to see that spider. I think spiders are incredibly cool. And yes I'm a girl 😏

I was secretly rooting for the wild Hawk to catch a rabbit 😀 Sure I wanted Belle to catch one but it's not so serious with her. She will get her food anyway. The wild Hawk will go hungry 😢

Do the your birds get to that point where they actually guide you for a better hunt? Can they get to that level or is it always based on your training and the lead in the field?

Curious... you say the bird is free to fly away and never come back, but why is there a bell attached to her? What if she decided one day to fly away with the bell attached?

Does she get excited when she realizes she’s going hunting?
I wonder if it would make sense to bring a mobile 3-4 meter high "perch" [the challenge is to make it stable enough at the top for the animal to feel comfortable using it ... while keeping it light enough to be carried around through semi-rough terrain] for the bird to have a better angle on the area AND an easier start for the flight. The "beater" then goes around the perch in a decently sized circle to scare the rabbits into revealing their position.

I’ve always been curious, do you think having the bells on her decreases her chances of catching prey? (Hi guys! I’m Emily’s husband).
The rabbits don't perceive the sound of her bell as any threat. There are plenty of other hawk sounds that alert them of her approach.

Sometimes it's difficult to hear the screams of the rabbits when Bella catches them. Wish Martin could expedite (break there necks) them much faster.
He dispatches them as quickly as possible. They are much better off with him around than when a wild gets them.
Why does Belle have bells attached to her feet? Doesn't that make it harder to hunt? It will warn the prey that the hawk is coming right?
It's to make the bird easier to find and so that you can hear it when it moves if you aren't looking at it. The prey don't make the connection between the bell sound and the bird.
The rabbits don't perceive the sound of her bell as any threat. There are plenty of other hawk sounds that alert them of her approach.

Hurts my heart to see the demise of bunnies. How about fish, snakes or nasty creatures.
