  • When Jackie Cummings Koski was getting a divorce, she learned that she'd saved much less than her husband in her 401(k). That led her on a path to FIRE, and after retiring at 49, she's on a mission to spread financial literacy.

People are hating on her for starting with the settlement from her divorce but it was 65-100k and she retired with more than 1.2 million. Think about that.

    • @AnnC117

I agree. She still had to grind. 65-100 is just a jump start which I'm sure she deserved.

It would suit her if she paid back the 100K to her ex if she's up 1.2 million. But that probably didn't happen.

Anybody hating on her is missing the point… I only got 10,000 out of my divorce in my mid-20s, but it was still a catalyst for me to learn about finance because as women we often expect a man to handle that and we don’t take care of ourselves.... Her point was that her divorce made her look at her finances for the first time and to educate herself, I totally relate and good for her!

This woman is so inspiring. When my dad died suddenly, it left my mom with little financial knowledge. She had investments and savings but she didn't know anything about it because my dad dealt with it. This knocked me into gear so I have spent the last year educating myself and my mom on how to make our money work for us. I'm lucky that I make a good salary but financial education is so important so that I learned not to waste money.

God job! I started saving very late, like when I was 52 years old. I started to buy some stocks and learned as I went. You win some and you lose some. I had hoped to retire early, but my stocks plummeted 2019-2020 so I had to keep working. I had some high risk shares to speed things up and I knew that was dangerous. I'm happy to say that my stocks have gone up like 130% this year and I hope it will continue up for a while :)
What I was going to say was, people would be surprised to know how easy it is to learn about the stock market. There are lots of good books and plenty of pods and TH-cam videos. I am also a member of a group on Facebook with 25 000 women learning about stocks and fonds!

No wonder marriage rates are falling year after year. With all these gold digging women stealing what men have worked and saved for their entire lives, and then claiming that they deserve half or more of the guys Financial portfolio because of a fees years at home, again spending his money.
Get real lady hiring a babysitter would not come anywhere close to the price of a house, and find me one grandparent that doesn't want to babysit their grandson or granddaughter.

My degree was 25 years old and I had not worked in over 25 years due to a serious Autoimmune Condition. I got NO support from him. (I was brainwashed.) I took in renters into my home to pay my bills and cleaned houses for $10.00 an hour. It took me a year but I found a sales job selling cellular phones and making around $21,000 a year but at least I had benefits finally. This is a typical story of a woman and divorce.

I am in a long-term relationship, I see how it holds me back because he doesn't have an education background, isn't trying to think of a better job, or owning a business, or retirement and this is all I think about as I don't have a child yet in my early 30's, plus I am scared to date and move on because I want a child and figured I have invested in this relationship.

She risked her damn life to give birth to THEIR child and meanwhile she had to be a babysitter, nurse, cook and teacher to THEIR child while still working. Imagine her husband having to HIRE a private chef, babysitter, nurse and teacher. 100k is nothing! Women need to start charging for labor around the house because that's where most of their time goes to.
Edit: lets not forget that he would have to pay a surrogate to birth his child!

NAI ANI google invest club for your city. Meetup.com usually has a current list. This is for in person usually but in this time, zoom can connect you with people from all over.

Woow so inspiring!!! I'm trying to retire by 40 become financially free by 35 tops. And I'm on track day trading while investing, buying my first rental property working a few months thanks to everything I've saved thus far. The best since I'm 33 and live with my parents I'm able to play around with 70% of my income and since my lifestyle is extremely cheap a lot can be done without having to make a crazy salary.
A lot of people arent in better situations financially because they choose to be that way I flipped 4 properties while making only 13 an hour 2 years ago and those fund started everything.
What I DO REGRET IS COLLEGE the biggest expense and a complete waste of time! I would had so much money now if it wasnt for paying of all my debt.

So inspirational!!! After decades of oblivion, I'm as of this year on my way to FI and financial literacy. This lady really inspired me. She did it as a single mom. This is superhuman! Thank you so much!!!

The fact that she is in Dayton, Oh! Wow. I spent half my life there and let me tell you, that's the least inspiring place to live. This video is confirmation that I'm on the right track in life.

We do not know how much she got from the divorce. She said she got $60k from his 401k; which was half of the account. I'm sure there were other assets that she received as well.
Also, did she receive alimony and/or child support? Knowing the answers to these items would provide a better understanding of the full financial picture.
However, growing from $575,000 to $1,100,000 in 4.33 years from significant contributions and gains is an accomplishment!

Never been married but in my 20s and teens working in banking I definitely witnessed married couples who have financial issues and the divorced aren't a pretty picture so I learned to keep independent accounts.
