This was shot over the last couple of weeks of Oct 1945. Judy was probably about 22 weeks pregnant (w/Liza) at the time. Being her first pregnancy, she still wasn't showing all that much and they did well to hide what little baby bump she had by then.
Judy was always one to tell great stories and she would laugh about this number for years after -- "Here I was (motioning on her own body), pregnant out to here -- and I'm running around singing 'Who' to all the chorus boys."
her hair was so pretty and her dress goes right along with it.
Her hair is like silky caramel and she looks absolutely fantastic for being pregnant during this scene and of course her singing and dancing is top notch.
Twelve people gave this the thumbs down? Who? Why? What do they know about this kind of entertainment - presumably nothing.
This film was worth watching only for Judy. One reviewer said for twenty minutes, the entire picture is her's. Without Judy, I believe this film would not have been as popular as it is now. Judy in my eyes saved every film she ever did and made them a lot better with her presence and that outstanding voice that nobody else can match

This performance screams Three words: Stunning, perfect and amazing. Judy looks simply beautiful here, and this is a fantastic dance number! The vocals are perfect too! Basically, this is perfection.

I think this is Judy Garland's most charming number in her career,
She truly looks like a truly elegant woman.
That dress does wonders for her image, it was rare that the studios ever gave her something truly glamorous and dream-like to wear (even when she got "woman" roles instead of "girl" ones), so this is so cherish-able.
She was the greatest musical star: great voice, good dancing, superlative acting. A complete natural.

I never realized she was pregnant while filming this scene until I read the comments below and noticed that it was a double who got lifted up at 1:45. And if you look very closely at the area where she enters to get "lifted up", you can just see a bit of Judy's yellow dress while her double is on the platform.

you can see when judy is in profile and a couple of times front on, a few times in the movie that she is 'rounder' than she usually was at this point in her career. I greatly admire her for having done this scene while she was pregnant.
The most clever use of a scarf in movies too. They told her to just keep moving it across her "bump" which was, of course, Liza.

SDKoka.....I beg to differ a little. Garland garnered a reputation at MGM as chronically tardy and a no show for many films in the 1940s. She was actually fired from MGM in September 1950 because she had failed to complete about three films: Annie Get Your Gun, The Barkleys of Broadway and Royal Wedding. In those days if an actor refused or did not complete films, he/she faced suspension or dismissal. In Garland's case, it was the latter. Garland went on to stage and more radio and came to Warner's in '53-54 for A Star Is Born. But the ups and downs of that life and career until her death were heartbreaking. There will never be another one like her.

She was playing the star of 1920's hits Marilyn Miller, who headlined the Ziegfeld Follies and his Sally and Sunny. This and Look for the Silver Lining were her two most famous signature songs. Hence the blonde wig - in a forties fashion rather than twenties, but Judy looks gorgeous so who's complaining!
She looks really good with blonde hair. As usual, her singing and dancing is topnotch! I haven't seen this movie in years. I think Judy was also portraying another famous singer in this movie.
gazebo46....Garland was portraying Marilyn Miller in this film. Marilyn Miller was primarily a dancer. She was in some of the Florenz Ziegfeld stage shows, and she was in a few early talkie film musicals from Warner's. The biopics from Hollywood out of the 1930s, 40s, 50s always tended to deviate from some of the actual truths. Judy Garland as Marilyn Miller is one of those deviations.

Oh, yes, the talent was huge, but media, biographies, fans, etc...have exploited her life so much. That is what stands out above all. Definitely there will never be another one like her.

This was beautiful I got shivers,goosebumps,I cried this was the best 10 minute role cameo brief role anyone ever has in a movie,wow pure class beauty grace elegance,this made me cry I truly wish we had beautiful classy,simple intelligent women like her in this generation that was impeccable ,I think she took a cue or two from Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers but this is magical a cinematic true achievement wow,I am in loss for words the last high note with the heavenly choir made me cry.

Yes. I get nervous watching Judy dance in this because I had a cousin who tore up the dance floor at a wedding when she was 3 months pregnant and she lost her baby. It's a beautiful number, but it was kind of reckless to ask a woman at that stage of pregnancy to do that kind of dance number. But Judy was a trooper and I'm sure she did it in less than 4 takes.

She looked on top of her game here. Just radiant. Shame she didn't delay renewing that contract and took some time off before coming back healthy and stronger than ever.
One thing I'll never get over is the fact she couldn't complete Annie Get Your Gun. If she had been as healthy and happy as this I have no doubt it would've been one of her most popular films besides Oz. At least we have her soundtrack!

Garland garnered a reputation as chronically tardy and a no show for her many films at MGM in the 1940s. Louis B.Mayer, her mother, Minnelli, and al...knew Garland the commodity. That is why she was dismissed from MGM in September 1950. Actually she should have been dismissed years beforehand. Within '49-50 she failed to complete three films: Annie Get Your Gun, The Barkleys of Broadway and Royal Wedding. In those days if an actor refused or did not complete assignments, he/she faced suspension or dismissal. In Garland's case, the latter....but Garland was in desperate need of help as a person. Watch Betty Hutton interview with Robert Osborne from 2000. Betty was right. Judy never found herself. It was all still a facade with her in the 1960s when she was in her 40s.

I've watched this film for years and have only just noticed it isn't Judy who gets hoisted up onto the platform but a body double. Makes sense considering she was pregnant with Liza at the time but funny to see her lingering behind the dancers as the double is lifted in the air.
They did an excellent job. It was so quick and subtle. It took me once or twice to watch closely, and even then, it's not super obvious.

If I could just step on those stairs, I'd buy an expensive yellow dress, gang up a bunch of cardboard cut outs of men in tailcoats, and lip sync to this song, just for a 2 minute clip of me being in a place, singing a song, Judy was. I hope she is my guardian angel.

Thanks for your comment and information. It was a husband's work that got Judy to dance. Her dance is really amazing and beautiful. The orchestra does a great job in playing this number. Few movies would offer us as splendid a scene as what we see in this clip.
That's actually "chartreuse", a color that--along with nutmeg--was all the rage during the 1940s but is scarcely seen today.

You are probably correct about this being her 2nd pregnancy, but I was thinking in terms of successful (to term) pregnancies! I have no idea where that story is repeated or told definitively, but I know that I've read it more than once -- try Gerald Frank's book, "JUDY" or Vincente Minnelli's "I REMEMBER IT WELL."

This actually happened to my mom. Apparently one night my grandpa forced her to do a belly dance for some visiting dignitaries. She was pregnant with me at the time and when I was born one of my legs was twisted and apparently this is because of that dancing she did. So you're right it is dangerous. I've got the let my cat out it's crying.

I read that after a difficult dance number she said she wasn't sure she could do it again bc whoever was in her belly was going to come out of her navel. Liza was dancing in the womb.
All I can say about Judy in this movie is... Pregnant and gorgeous people, Pregnant and gorgeous.
This was performed eons before wireless mics. So all sound was replaced in a separate lip sync recording session. In fact, the preferred way is still to post produce singing rather than do the scene over on the set.

Most of the songs were pre-recorded in musicals. Then the number was filmed with the actor doing lip-sync to the recording. Then if it was necessary, technicians would come back in to synchronize the recording with the filmed mouth of the actor.
This number was longer at first . Judy sang the complete song and the dance was longer. But it was edited before the movie was released.

always loved her! no matter who she is dancing with, somehow your eyes just naturally focus on Judy! wonder if the yellow scarf that she keeps whipping about (esp around her belly) is to distract one from seeing she is pregnant, along w/ ribbon/belt that comes UP over rib cage under her breast leading your eye away again from the belly, and is low in the back just above her butt, pretty fashion yes but I am sure it was well planned, the zoom in ending goes above her belly, and the scarf thing is funny esp at the beginning seems she is laughing at herself trying to remember to keep an arm or scarf in front of her belly, like she was scolded before going out & she keeps forgetting...Judy was know for her great sense of humor & she was a wonderful story teller!! yep she could do it ALL!
Few pregnant women could do what Judy Garland did in this clip. She was pregnant with Liza Minnelli. I wonder how the director convinced her to dance with a pregnant body in high heels. I had not realized her pregnancy until I saw others mention it. Well she was a professional.
Judy Garland was a little, petite woman. With only being 3 or 4 months along, she wasn't going to show that much!!!!!
