  • Let's take a trip to what some consider the evilest place on earth, Dudleytown, CT. This small abandoned village nestled between mountains is creepy and off putting even before you learn about all the cursed stuff that happened there. Legend says that an ancestral Dudley made a shady play for the throne of England in the 16th century and everything went downhill from there. It would appear the curse that was put upon the Dudley family followed them to the New World, because Dudleytown was beleaguered by accidental deaths, insanity, demonic activity and more before being completely deserted. Was the curse real, could it have been an extremely unfortunate string of bad luck, or was Dudleytown merely resting on a nexus of evil? Tune in and find out if We Were Had!
We Were Had is a podcast of Murder, Mystery, and the Unnatural! Your hosts, Comedians Mae Planert, Max Spinelli, and Ben Kirschenbaum dive in each week to bring you the facts.

Dudes, I think you've got a legit horror movie concept here: gentrifying hipsters open coffee shop on a mountain near a spooky old town, with scary results. (double underlined)

Did anyone see between 22:15 and 22:23 something scurried across the base of the door in the background from right to left. I think there studio room is haunted, or they have mice/rats.

I grew up in rural Connecticut, and a group of us went up to check out Dudleytown, maybe around 1989 or so ... And, sort of, stuff happened.
Back then, you *could* still go up there, if you knew where to pick up the old dirt road (trail), up from the base of the mountain.
Anyway, me, my brothers, and my brother's friend Dave went up on afternoon. At first it was cool, poking around, finding old foundations, finding a spot with some strange small mounds reminiscent of maybe-graves, but we couldn't be sure. It was "neat" but that was about it. Only one area of dense trees felt spooky but the rest just felt like going on a light hike on a nice fall New England day.
But because I had read so much about it, I was kind of disappointed. It didn't feel "haunted enough." So, getting kind of bored, me and my brother's friend Dave started cracking jokes about the place ... while we were still there. Not smart.
Anyway, eventually, having explored all that we could, we left. On the way back home, maybe an hour's drive, we stopped midway at a small town McDonald's. My brother was driving and for whatever reason I decided to stay in the car, in the back seat, and wait for them to get the food and come back. As I sat there I played with a rosary I had brought with me. (You can't be too careful.) This was my rosary from my baptism, so I'd had it forever and it being my only religious object, it felt like it was a good insurance policy to bring along. As I sat, I had the rosary rounded out around my knee, the cross facing up at me from its place on my thigh. I was just idly playing with it when the growing sound of voices signaled that the guys were approaching. Yay, food! We all handed the bags around to each other and then continued on our trip back home.
Now, the only rational thing I can think of to explain what happened next is this: at one point we got lost (on backroads) and had to stop once more at a gas station to ask for directions. I hopped out to ask. No big deal.
But when I got home I realized my rosary was missing. Gone. I searched everywhere, all over the car, under mats, in the cracks of the seat cushions. Nothing. The rosary I have had all my life was gone. There was nothing I could do about it, so I kind of shrugged it off.
That night, I went to a movie with a friend. I started to get a headache, which for me back then was very unusual. Then I stayed over his house. As I tried to go to sleep, I realized this was a mistake. I was feeling worse now and wished I were home. This was before I drove, so it would have been a big inconvenient deal to wake people up and get someone to drive me home.
So as I lay there, wishing it were morning, I realized I wasn't going to make it. I was going to be sick. I rushed into the bathroom to throw up. Now I hear commotion and realized I had woken up people in the quiet house. I was utterly embarrassed, especially when I heard my friend's mom asking my friend if I'd been drinking. I didn't even drink back then, so the whole thing felt shameful. I was not home, I felt like death, and I was also being accused of bad behavior.
I think I sweated it out until the morning at which time my friend dropped me home. I crawled into bed and proceeded to be as sick as I have ever been. I had a non-stop pounding headache, sweats, and I could not even take a sip of water, let alone an aspirin, because I would immediately throw it up all over again. This went on for the next three days: not a drop of water, except to wet my mouth, nothing. I was already a skinny late-teen back then, but now with this event I went on to lose 10 pounds in 3 days. It was awful.
Then came the other news: right after we got back, my friend Dave fell or tripped ... he either broke his ankle or twisted it very badly. I don't remember which now.
But the fact is this: only Dave and I made fun of the place. My two brothers did not, and suffered absolutely no consequences.
I have also had people suggest to me that maybe I got food poisoning from the McDonald's. And yet all four of us ate the exact same food at the exact same time, and no one else had a single thing wrong with them.
So ... I do not fuck around with that place. I've never gone back. Wouldn't want to. I now have a very healthy fear and respect for Dudleytown, even if it does just seem like a sleepy old place in the woods.

If you folks think Dudley Town Ct is evil & messed up.....
Cause there's one place that ought'a be in it's own category of evil & messed up.
It's in Russia,. And it's called Nazinsky island.
Now that would be a great narrative subject/content pod cast.
Let alone the history of that place would give just another pod cast all to its own.
That place currently?... No one dares to go there today.

Sounds like the town in the classic horror film, The City of the Dead.
But watched a few vids of people exploring this place, looks very Blair Witch/Sleepy Hollow. Fair few old stone walls of structures and fire places still standing.

It was actually the inspiration for a lot of blair witch!
