Tied on a size 10 streamer hook, this is a pretty small intruder, but you can tie them even smaller with these techniques and materials. And if you don't want to tie your own, we have Jonathan Farmer versions coming very soon. It's time to get out there and swing for trout. When trout take these they do not do it delicately.
MATERIALS:
Hook: streamer, size 10
Thread: 140 Denier, Olive
Eyes: Lead dumbbell eyes, extra small, black
Butt: Fine Shrimp Pink Chenille
Tails: OPST Barred Ostrich, Yellow Green
Rib: Mono thread, 10/0
Body: Lateral Scale, Black
Shoulder: Olive Sculpin Wool, Lady Amherst,
clear barred predator wrap and UV dark olive
Ice Dub
Wings: saddle hackles, orange

I tie these in a multitude of colors and they all work. Lately I have been using a shank I cut down and snell a stinger hook on gives it even better movement .

Thanks, I finally have something to do with all the sculpin wool I bought before the new synthetics came out for tying nice bulky heads on sculpin and baitfish flies. Have you ever tried the Norvise. And if so did you like it ?
The Norvice is very nice! Many of us tie on regal, but our Ops Manager has tried the Norvise and liked it.
Hi again Ben, now I understand more of what the difference is between the soft hackle you tied and this mini intruder. Even the soft hackle's "antennas" or horns as I called them correspond with the hackle wings on the mini intruder, you're just downsizing. Excellent! 👍 Your casting segment was beautiful. I'll have to look into that system, as I fish mostly small streams but I can see how I could fish bigger rivers and confined casting areas. Is Skagit a casting style or method like scandi? Are those tips sinking? Actually it's a shooting head system, correct? Thanks Ben.

OPSkagit Ok, that explains alot. I know the rivers in the NW (if that's where you're fishing) are different than here in NY. I called Kaufman's Streamborn about 15 years ago and the guy that took my call was a NY transplant and that's what he told me, as far as steelhead go. Thanks again, you're a great help.
So are you using a sink tip and dead drifting this fly? That's what I've been trying without much luck. I have an 11'6" 4 weight Redington Hydrogen with a 300 grain OPST Skagit head and a 12' OPST Bucket sink tip. I have a hard time shooting line, a hard time making my drifts last longer than 15 or 20 seconds, and I've only caught one fish in my first two outings.
