How do the muskrats grade when you trap that early? Would be a lot easier for me to get open water rats vs through the ice in march when they are prime
Very nice and great job there. It reminds me of my younger days doing same thing . When I was 15ing to 18ing years old my best year was right at 2000 rats. Its alot work more than what someone thinks. Pretty cool seeing ya do it . My son is now. . Keep videos coming buddy . Stay safe
I only have one 1 muskrat season under my belt and I only ran about 20 traps. This year, I'm going to 150 traps and my goal is to catch 200-300 rats. Which is for before ice up, through the ice muskrat, and spring muskrat. So hopefully I can get my goal. I hope I can be as good as you one year and get 2000 rats.
Great stuff. We use very similar fiberglass pole setups. I do have a question for you: How long does it take for you to set about 200 in your current configuration?
Last time I went out I had 283 footholds and 4 colonies set in roughly 11 hours. That was setting 2 traps per hut and occasionally a third, I did 3 and 4 per hut on the water to run catch percentages. What I found was if I did 2 and occasionally 3 traps, and 1 on really small ones, per hut, I produced the same amount of rats in 2 days as I would with the 3 or 4 traps per hut. The initial catch percentages on the first check were approximately the same but on check #2 the catch percentage was much much less as compared to the less traps per hut. This made me realize that less traps can sometimes produce the same, if not more rats than more traps would. The other issue is with more traps per hut is that setting takes longer, and pulling takes longer. I hope this makes sense, I'd like to make a video detailing my thoughts on this subject.
I skin them fresh and freeze them skinned to be fleshed and stretched at a later date. I try to put up 125 a day in winter when nothing else is going on.
You are a no nonsense honest trapper. Thank you for your videos
Nice haul!
Any idea what the going price for Muskrats in 2022? Good luck for the rest of the season.

very good catch where you located
New trapper here. Do you freeze these rats? What's the timing like for fur handling?

Did the pile of yesterday's rats have green bellies?
