Welcome The Freak!! I met the wonderful Maggie Kirkpatrick last week and it was the most surreal experience. She is a lovely, good-humoured lady and I am utterly privileged to have had the opportunity to meet her. Thank you, Maggie xx
Maggie Kirkpatrick said in an interview later that lots of people commented on how still she seemed when she made the entrance, but it was actually because she was completely terrified.
The way she walked and marched the corridors when she first got there was hallarious I'm glad she gave up that stupid walk with her hands behind her back 😂😂😂👐
I was just thinking the opposite actually Yes KINDA lowkey but in a very considered style…. As if the producers KNEW they were introducing an iconic character The way the camera slowly swoons around her Im watching it closer now. The show has been a total yawnfest
I just finished the series for the first time and came back to this episode. It's like experiencing it all over again for the first time, that camera work when Joan enters the building, you KNOW this character is about to leave a very long lasting impact.
I must say, this particular episode is brilliantly written, the way they introduce Ferguson. I often wonder what it must have been like to watch it in 1982 when it first went to air. These are the episodes that got me hooked on Prisoner when I first watched it in the 90's.
I watched the episode when it went to air in 1982, I was 8 years old and I tell you, it was a hell of a wow factor in those days and I went to bed having nightmares about "Ferguson".
I was there from the beginning as well. People did organise their lives to make sure they were home for Prisoner - no videos or repeats back then. Hated "The Freak" and kept wishing someone would succeed in getting rid of her.
@@karennicholls8532Hi. What time did it used to air in Australia in 1982? It was always on late in UK, LIKE 11:30pm and was always being moved, sometimes 12:45am. As kids we used to try and stay awake to watch it, but always fell asleep.
I saw this in the UK about ten years later and yes Ferguson's entrance made a really big impression - particularly the sequence where she gets Doreen up against the wall and searches her. Black gloves on she lowers herself and cut to Doreen screwing her face up. Yep, this marks a shift in tone for Prisoner. Can you imagine Vinegar or Coleen or Mrs Barrie doing that? I'd been a casual viewer of the show till then but after Ferguson arrived I was hooked. She was the bent screw villain that drew fresh breath to the show. An inspired character inspiredly cast.
This is the first episode I ever watched! 2009...I picked up the "best of" set at a local bookstore (the only dvds available in the United States) and I've been hooked ever since!!! I now own the complete collection boxset from Australia and a savings account that's been wiped clean! Worth every. Bloody. Penny!!!
Maggie doesn't look nervous at all for her first day on the job but the freak sure as hell made me nervous when she caught Doreen and began putting on the black gloves, LOL.
It doesn't show, but Maggie Kirkpatrick says that she was terrified in her first scenes! She makes such an immediate impression. She's not my favorite PCBH character, but I can't deny the impact she had on the show when things were flagging a bit; and her influence created so much drama and intrigue for other characters, and facilitated many memorable Prisoner storylines. Maggie herself is a superb actor, really committing to an incredibly demanding role. About the posh accent - this crops up regularly at different times, often when she's talking to the Governor or when she's looking to impress.
And thus entereth the one, the only, THE FREAK - Joan Ferguson. Credit to the writers: they hit the ground running with establishing her character right at the start. Even her first day at Wenthworth is iconic. You just know the women are in for a unique kind of hell with her and Bea is right in the firing line. Interesting how Meg's"she's a bit masculine" observation quickly gets commented on as "she's a butch lesbian" without specifics in the form of Davo's comments about "whatever she gets up to in her private life is her business." Gosh the early 80's.
i realize you wrote your comment on "Cell Block H/Prisoner" 2 years ago.. but I gotta ask SOMEONE! What DID Happen to That Half-Way House the first season and a half revolved around?? Where one of the "predatory lesbians" was in charge of? - plus shot and maried to the doctor and disappeared whats-her-name... where Doree and Lizzy were paroled into. What Happened To It?: Did I miss it - or did they the writers just forget all about it?? ANYONE With INFO ON THAT Half-Way-House I'd be very grateful for what supposedly happened to/with it. Now a hostel (and that house that house the women were working on during free-day labor?? is the hostel THAT place??) This Clearly uncaring and arrogant prejudiced old woman shouldnt be in charge of anything where people are involved. Did the Half way house blow up in some qic scene i'd forgotten about? or did they just forget all about it? ridiculous. THNKS!
Issues, people and things have a way of disappearing. It is a soap opera. This explains some questions prisonercellblockh.wikia.com/wiki/Sally_Lee_Halfway_House They may have just forgotten about it.
Jack Joseph the first halfway house did dissapear from the show, the second place the women worked on when dor escaped was scrapped coz dor escaped and Driscoll house that Judy manages hasn’t happened yet. The girls home suzie s in isn’t the same place, and I agree the lady running it is a dragon!
I remember Maggie and Val (Lehman) visiting Rotherham back in the early 1980's, to do a bingo hall opening + meet, greet, and press the flesh with PCBH fans. It was weird as such at the time, because here in the UK Joan Ferguson wasn't yet in the episodes that had been shown on UK TV. So a few Rotherham folks got a sneak peek at a future PCBH legend that day. Much respect to both of them for visiting our little town. (Then the underage teenage pregnancy capital of the whole of Western Europe if memory serves me right..)
Maggie Kirkpatrick said afterwards that lots of people commented on how still she seemed when she made her entrance, but it was because she was so terrified with nerves that she could hardly move.
I first watched this show in the early 90s UK as child of strict parents so had to creep downstairs and put tv on really low volume lol because it was on quite late and all I remember is Fergusons character. I remember being simultaneously horrified and fascinated by her and became addicted to the show purely because of her. Tgis is the first time since then I’m watching as an adult in my own home and can’t wait to follow her storylines properly without unexpected interruptions with me running upstairs like a scared rabbit whenever I heard my parent’s bedroom open lol 😅
A warm welcome to the long awaited Miss Joan Fergusan. I was waiting long to see her arrival and I am glad she has finally arrived. She is a super woman!
Joan has a menacing feeling about her right from the beginning. I do wonder how people reacted to her when this originally aired. I may just be feeling that way because I've seen Wentworth and know she's a villain already. Glad she's here finally! I've really missed Vera. Kate kept things interesting for a lot of the interim but she's been gone for a while now too.
I didn't noticed on the original UK showing.. But I was only a kid then! Watching it second time around her entrance is brilliantly sinister! She's the best character the show had.. To film it in such a way the writers must of known how iconic she would become
I'm still only about halfway through the series, but I agree she is possibly their best character yet! And that's saying something in my case because I loved Vera!
22:00 A shadow of someone very sinister, dark, devious, thrilling comes into Wentworth!!. I hear "Ave Satani" , " Oh Fortuna" amongst others as very fitting as Ferguson graces us with her initial appearance 😀😉 .
I have, for the second time, wound back to 287 after 692, the finale. I haven't heard Doreen's voice for a while. She sounds like she's using a pitch shifter, a sort of Munchkin. Old favourites reappear or come back to life. Wayne Jarratt, forever young. Patsy King is in her 90"s now! Why did I wind back to 287....someone is about to arrive, someone called Joan...
Finally, I've reached - 287!!! I damn near died trying to get here. I'm excited to see what 'The Freak' is all about. Hopefully she lives up to all the hype. With Chrissy back and the Joan in the works, hopefully this show is over this *long ass* slump.
What a powerful entrance and powerful first episode for the Freak. I read somewhere she was only due to do 16 eps. Well, from her first you can instantly tell she is not going anywhere. A very clever move in keeping her on if the 16 eps story is true. 12th May 2023.

And at the start of this episode, which supposedly shows what happened in the previous episode. Chrissie's sister-in-law has got a sleeveless nightie on. And isn't wearing the purple dressing gown 😜

Funnily enough, I believe this was the first episode of Prisoner I ever watched, back in about 1991. I distinctly remember Mrs. Beamish "everything in its place", and the pigtailed "muh studies" girl. But most of all, no wonder I was hooked after the Freak's entrance!
Elizabeth Latham's character was played by Lucas Bradley who was the son of producer Ian Bradley and script editor/actress Anne Lucas. Anne Lucas Played Faye Quin
🎉🍾🎉🎈🎉 - Yay The Freak is here - Well worth the long wait. 🙂 One of the best Tv Villains of all time. This will sure spice things up a lot - Things will never be the same again in Wentworth 🎉🎈🎉🍾🎉
Maggie Kirkpatrick walks onset and instantly upstages the entire established cast. Bea, Erica, Meg, Coleen, Judy, Doreen, Lizzie etc all become support acts for The Freak. It's her show from now on. Tremble as you watch...
And it progressively went downhill from there, it became more about her and her evilness than stories about the prisoners, as the weeks went on after she joined the cast I lost interest in the show.
They ruined her character by making her totally unbelievable she was a force and then how she kept getting away from stupid things she became predictable and stale wasn't the actress who made this mistake it was the writing some of the things she got away with were ridiculous and so stupid
I love that iconic meeting of Joan Ferguson. --- 2nd time around. I am a massive fan of Maggie Kirkpatrick. She's played Joan Ferguson very, very well. she's has to be one of the best actresses in this show next to Val. I love the big feud that develops with Queen Bea & Joan. ok Joan's character seems very hard and tough. But some where deep down she has a heart of gold. especially with little shane. I loved how they wrote Joans character. She's hard person to figure out if you like her or hate her. This is my 2nd time around now. to me this is where the show really starts. Maggie Nailed this role and speaking as a fan of the show, There will only ever be one Joan Ferguson , Bea Smith, etc etc. Not seen the remake and l don't plan to either. Tho it would be cool if they brought back the original tv set and the prison. it would be great instead of a remake - they did whole new show where it follows 30 years later and bringing back maggie as Joan Ferguson. No reboots or remakes but a follow on... if l was tv show writer - yes l would bring this show back to life. with the original studio and tv set and the original wentworth would still look the same but with 21st centre vibe. Keeping with what fans would love. I proably would bring back the odd original members from time to time.
I think that is a good idea, and think it would be awesome, don't care what the detractors say, Especially agree that you could bring back some of the younger characters from the late 80s in cameos, maybe one of the late 80s characters went on to become a prison officer, or a journalist or re-offender. Maybe Lexie went on to become a politician, and then gets banged up😂
Episode 287 from PrisonerCellBlockH95 Archives. This episode introduces Maggie Kirkpatrick as Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson. Watch out for the famous leather gloves scene from one of our favourite loved and hated villians.
When the Freak had Doreen up against the wall for a body search I couldn't work out if Collette Mann was about to burst into fits of laughter as Doreen was about to cry!
The first time I saw this episode was in early September 1996 in Gothenburg, Sweden. I was in my element having travelled all day to get to the hotel, climb into bed and turn on the tv to witness this Beautiful little snippet of television history.
@ 23:13 “Why do they keep having these cell searches?” Well Doreen, it’s because Lizzie is a hopeless alcoholic and keeps recklessly leaving her hooch all over the prison to be found.
Welcome The Freak!!

Or " Ave Satani" from the Omen film ? Or " O Fortuna " by Carl Orff lol !! 😀😉
Or that as well lol.
Ride of the Valkyries is Joan's song
Yessssss Joan Ferguson. Love the entrance!!
Now look at the scene. In the last episode, it was still dark outside and Brenda had her house dress on, now it's dawn and she's in just her nightgown.
Well it would seem Susie got released just at the right time. She won't have to endure the tyranny of the meanest screw "The Freak!"
she's not out of the woods yet. she's got some very very hard times ahead
More comments on this episode than any previous one.....I wonder why:)
Here we go!!! The episode everyone waits for !!!!!
iiiiiiiiiiiits Ferguson time!!!!! Let the fun begin!!!!! I waited 287 episodes to see the Joan Ferguson era once again!
woah yeh now the action starts the freak joan ferguson wow
Joan Ferguson should die in Wentworth (2013) show because she killed Bea Smith. 😠😡
When none of them have no idea what has arrived. Boom 💥
Ferguson is such a great tv villain that she gets under my skin in a personal way. that’s a great villain
Joan Ferguson has arrived, Black gloves and all
It is big, it is butch, it is manly and it's handy
HAPPY BELATED CHRISTMAS TO ALL PRISONER FANS AKA " BLOCKMATES" & HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016 . THANKS SO SO MUCH TO LIAM " PrisonerCellBlockH95" our leader and fantastic uploader. We all think you are Bonza Mate , you truly are a star for all the hard work you have done uploading. You bring so much entertainment to us all and I just wanted to say thank you mate. I am sure all my fellow fans / Blockmates will fully agree with me. I have Multiple Sclerosis and juvenile Arthritis in my knees and back ( due to a bad fall off my horse when I was 12 and a botched series of operations, that discovered I had haemophilia) so your uploads keep me entertained when I am ill and bed bound , in pain or during the night when I am in severe pain and can't sleep . Prisoner takes my mind off the pain . Cheers Liam , you are a true blue genuine fantastic person . Warmest wishes , from Alexis-Luca ⭐️👍🏻✌🏻️😀😉🍀🍻
FÜRSTVONSCHWARZENBERG 18/4/17 - Are you really training to be a doctor?
Stephen Povey-jones No longer studying mate. I have am now fully qualified thanks👍
So funny how Lizzie always pops up in the right place at the right time to eavesdrop on some good gossip! LOL
Here she is, so excited,
gotta love the freak.
Love these little bits of trivia thank you.
🎉🍾🎉🎈🎉 - Yay The Freak is here - Well worth the long wait. 🙂 One of the best Tv Villains of all time. This will sure spice things up a lot - Things will never be the same again in Wentworth 🎉🎈🎉🍾🎉
I like tv show
*teases* freak lover, freak lover.
Joan was much more well spoken when she first joined. I like her hair here too.
FERGIE!, FERGIE!, FERGIE!
Now this is where Prisoner REALLY starts!
FERGIE!!!
@@DibbersWorldView Your loss. She was the best thing to ever happen the show.
@@TheJoker27780 Ferguson breathed new life into the show after the lull in 1981, but Ferguson became a farce after a few years
@@Redsleather No she really didn't. She was a force right to the end. Let the show go out with a bang.
They ruined her character by making her totally unbelievable she was a force and then how she kept getting away from stupid things she became predictable and stale wasn't the actress who made this mistake it was the writing some of the things she got away with were ridiculous and so stupid
I'm surprised Driscoll didn't make one last harebrained escape attempt before her release. She could have gotten one in before breakfast.
Haha.
Yeah!!! Here comes MISS JOAN FERGUSON!!
I've only ever watched The Freaks episodes after Bea left, so i am looking forward to seeing how the two are together, i predict fireworks!!
You were really in for something when you watched it 8 years ago!!!!! Whew!
Theres still a lot of life in this show.
Her accent is very different when she starts here
The actors are mostly far too old now! Can't have a load of pensioners and late middle aged women banged up!
I think that is a good idea, and think it would be awesome, don't care what the detractors say, Especially agree that you could bring back some of the younger characters from the late 80s in cameos, maybe one of the late 80s characters went on to become a prison officer, or a journalist or re-offender.
Maybe Lexie went on to become a politician, and then gets banged up😂
I've been waiting,watching,waiting,watching....FINALLY. oh nooooo l forgot the black glove.what a show...love it.
You just know things are about to get good, i started watching originally during the freak era as a kid, looking forward to the next 400 ish episodes👍
I use to watch this with my Grandma❤
Episode 287 from PrisonerCellBlockH95 Archives.
This episode introduces Maggie Kirkpatrick as Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson. Watch out for the famous leather gloves scene from one of our favourite loved and hated villians.
THE BLACK GLOVES ARE ON READY!
The great Lady has arrived. Together, Ferguson and I will rule the World!
Doreen about the horse Chrissy wanted a bet on,"That nag,I 'd do better with Bea on me back"
😂😂,then it wins😂😂😂!!!
When the Freak had Doreen up against the wall for a body search I couldn't work out if Collette Mann was about to burst into fits of laughter as Doreen was about to cry!
"Correction fluid all over the uniform"
Don't ya just love the smutty euphemism :)
22:06 & here is is Joan Ferguson!
Now we await the arrival of ‘Reeeeeta the Beeetah!’😂
Here she comes! Until the very end!
Naturally. Quality like that is rare.
The first time I saw this episode was in early September 1996 in Gothenburg, Sweden. I was in my element having travelled all day to get to the hotel, climb into bed and turn on the tv to witness this Beautiful little snippet of television history.
... and here she comes: the one, the only s&m queen of Wentworth herself... Freaky Fergie! she won't leave any marks, lol
Best screw ever has always been “the freak”
Best top dog has always been Bea. Love Chrissy being back and of course we have lizzy 😂.. perfect episode.
Joan is now on the roll make the episodes more exciting now....
Poppers sniffing episode from Faulkner to the Govener 😄😄
@ 23:13 “Why do they keep having these cell searches?”
Well Doreen, it’s because Lizzie is a hopeless alcoholic and keeps recklessly leaving her hooch all over the prison to be found.
So this is Joan Ferguson, the Freak. I've waited 287 episodes for her!!
Here's were we've been waiting for the freak here we go.
