What Was A 1970s Record Shop Like? | Turn Back Time: The High Street

  • In this episode, it's the end of the journey for the shopkeepers and their customers as they move into the 1970s. There are two new arrivals, the Sandher family take over the general store and David Lashmar has the challenge of selling vinyl to 21st century shoppers from his 1970s record shop.
    Amidst the explosion of popular culture the supermarket reminds everyone of the part the 1970s played in our quest for cheap food and convenient shopping. At the cornershop the Sandher kids find out just how hard their dad worked when his family left India to set up shop in Britain and they are shocked to hear his memories of the 1970s. The record shop treats the town to a Eurovision winning band performance and all the traders prepare for a Silver Jubilee street party. The town has experienced one hundred years of high street history, but will power cuts, the 1970s shopping experience and the Great British weather dampen the community spirit that has built up over the years?

    The most telling moment of the whole series was when a lady accused the grocer of killing the high street and told him she hoped he could sleep at night. The truth is that she could have continued to pay more money at the bakers and butchers to help keep them afloat, but SHE chose to shop at the grocers to spend less money. The grocer wasn't forcing her or anyone else to shop at his store! The lack of awareness of her own part in the downfall of the high street was astonishing!

      Reality TV shows always have to cast someone as the villain. Mr Sergison operates a small business in real life so his attitude towards the other shopkeepers has to have been played up for TV.

      At the end of the day it is policy like deregulation that killed the high street, not individual people, with their limited budgets

    • @eek1759
      @eek1759 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      @@sophiesong8937 Maybe, but the likes of Wal-Mart and Amazon have proved that we all prefer to pay the least amount of money for the most convenience, and are willing to tolerate lower quality in the process. Mom and Pop shops will never be able to compete with that.

    • @sophiesong8937
      @sophiesong8937 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @@eek1759 Economic reality is that many people can only afford what they buy on Amazon because of the price it is offered on Amazon. Bricks and mortar stores have also done their part in reducing quality of service to the extent people don't see a service benefit to shopping locally. The supermarket in my town reduced register staff deliberately so queues were out of control, then solved 'the problem' they had created, by introducing self serve registers. If I am going to be forced to wait in long queues or play cashier myself, then yes I would be better off saving by shopping online. As you can see in the series, service was reduced over generations as laws were changed to benefit bigger businesses, and businesses themselves took on cost saving measures that reduced service. The average customer today isn't choosing between Victorian service and Amazon, and most of us never experienced service like that. I think this series shows there is potential for customers to be lured back to stores, but it would take personalised and sufficient service.

      @@ChakatSandwalker I guess that sort of explains it. I mean, there's the record store down the street, the bakery, the butcher shop, the general store, the tailor shop, the ice cream shop, the coffee shops... all of it. No, its not that. 1: He seemed to be selling old LPs. Where was the new content?, 2: Modern record shops ie. in the last 20 years also sell for the most part some basic equipment.
      The problem that most vinyl shops faced when they started to vanish is they didn't keep up with the times. The music I use to buy loads from even in the 80s was along with selling LPs, cassettes, laser discs, CDs. in the 90s they added mini disc, and started to sell some basic turntables, amps, speakers and headphones. This shop opened in 1960 and today in 2021 is still open and even expanded this year. New releases have always taken 75% of the floor space with used LPs taking up 25%.
      Next big problem is location. In a small town/village. That is not where the buying public is.

    It brought a tear to my eye when the daughter cried after hearing about the racist abuse that her Father experienced during the 70s and then he cried too. It would be upsetting to hear about a loved one having gone through those kinds of experiences.

      @ariannasilva4462 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      It was good for her and her Dad though to talk about it. Going through the grief together can help stop that intergenerational abuse. The racism is not okay at all, it's repulsive. But i've heard from many first and second generation children that sharing the struggles in this therapeutic crying hugging way really helps.

    • @amyrivers4093
      @amyrivers4093 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That really touched my heart too. The saddest thing is that there is still a lot of racism to this day. I was born in New Zealand in 1978. The fact that there is still so much racism means that in general some of us have a lot of hate towards others that may be different to us in any way including our ethnicity. I remember as a child anyone wearing glasses would be called four eyes. We are meant to be intelligent evolved people but the reality is very different. If someone is a different race, from a different place etc it's an opportunity to learn about different cultures, beliefs, thought, feelings and traditions not an opportunity to alienate each other with hate. We need to change this and it can start with a simple 'hello, how are you today' when you shop. Xx

      @@lelleithmurray235 I am so sorry that you have had to go through anything like that. I know that saying sorry doesn't help much but it's my way of saying I've heard you and I care that you have had to experience such hatred that it will always be with you. No one has the right to do that to you. I get so frustrated with people who deny racism is still alive today even though history has taught us what the tragic consequences of racism are. Just because racism looks different to when slavery existed or what happened in the holocaust doesn't mean that it no longer exists in different ways. Some are hidden deeply and others are blatantly obvious. I haven't experienced racism myself so I don't know exactly how soul destroying it is but I have spent a lot of time learning through books, the internet and personal stories, that it can break a person and that we must not let it break anyone's soul. I am yet to understand the psychology behind what makes people think that it's okay to be racist and hateful and how they act on the hate that is in their soul. Sorry I'm not very concise but I want you to know that we need to hear people's experiences, your experiences because one person can sound like a whisper where lots of whispers can shout out. I think that there are many people so caught up in their own world that they actually have no idea the extent of racism and the extent of how racism changes a persons life. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, your whisper will get louder everytime you talk about it. You are in my prayers tonight. Xx

The personal touch, care and knowledge that these shopkeepers provide is so valuable to communities. I know it costs a bit more and everything is so expensive nowadays, but it makes me think that maybe we ought to learn to do with less so that we are supporting the right people and so we can know that our money is going to support actual families who need it to make a living day to day. Well done series, with engaging and interesting volunteer shopkeepers. This episode hits one big nail on the head: local people have to spend a little more time to visit several shops, get to know the merchandise and the shopkeepers. What the series didn't do was talk about the role of landlords and store-front pricing. Shepton Mallet must have let the TV producers have the shops near-to-free, as part of the experiment. But so many small businesses today seem unable to afford the ever-increasing rents from their modest profits. The minute the High Street shop's a success, its rent seems to go up and quickly becomes unaffordable. And the shop closes, and the High Street loses another couple of customers...

      Once the lockdown is over, if they could make this a full time thing, and hire specialist (Butchers, Bakers, ect.) that are out of work, this idea could make serious coin on a regular basis. People love theme events, just look at Renaissance and Midevil fun fairs.

    • @HUNdAntae
      @HUNdAntae 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Highice007 i don't know how do you imagine the whole thing, but the core of the problem lies in the fact that ppl will go for the 59p tesco loaf and a baker needs to price the same loaf £1.50. Not even talking about landlords wanting to milk that sweet real-estate cow well dry.

    • @Highice007
      @Highice007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@HUNdAntae I predict there will be a lot of travel after lockdown. Tourist will pay extra for the bread made in a classic Victorian oven as part of the experience. Same with the other shops. It's a novelty experience, and they will not have to rely on the people of the town who would prefer going to Morrisons or Tesco, though some locals will go to the shops for a more personal experience. But the main profit will come from tourist. Lots of Canadians and Americans love the classic eras of British history and will go for that if they have planed a vacation to England anyway.

      @@HUNdAntae I think landlords are a really big problem and I just can’t understand how it can be more profitable for them to have empty premises for 5 or more years (we have quite a few like that in our town) instead of dropping the rent prices and actually getting some money instead of none at all.

    • @HUNdAntae

      @@Highice007 you can't run a business that provides daily necessities on tourism and novelty. If you make it an attraction, then you're running a bakery museum that has a snack shop with baps made in place. But that's a whole different business.

    When I bought vinyl as a child in the 70s I didn't buy 1970s records but from the fantastic catalogues of reissues from the 20s and 30s. Or classical music (Gould etc) that was also part of the 70s not just pop or punk. I also found it startling they apparently never had a book shop in that town. That was a social focus where I grew up in the 70s and 80s.

    Oh my goodness, they missed an obvious 70s time warp here. The Sergisons' daughter needs to wear Laura Ashley fashions! That was one of the highlights of my much younger days when we went to London. I fondly remember seeing Agatha Christie's "Mousetrap" in my first Laura Ashley dress, and my first pair of higher shoes, with my mother in London in the early 70s. Of course, it was always outdone by the trip to Pollock's Toy Store and Museum.
    My mother was also cool enough to get me a 45 of The Sex Pistols' "God Save the Queen" in 1977 -- and a t-shirt. I live in the USA. She was embarrassed to do it, but she did it!
    I love my mother!

    What I've taken from this is that it's the abolition of the equal pricing law which destroyed the high street. That was when larger shops, or shops with more funding, could bulk buy and undercut all other shops.
    That was when, regardless of service and inter-personal relationships, every single person in Shepton watched the pennies and went to the supermarket. And jobs became sitting at a till.
