- This video is the finest Mary Millar tribute of all. It is a mixture of Geezworld's original video tribute and my tribute video together to make a really good video to remember a lovely,warm hearted woman by the name of Mary Millar who played Rose 2 in a BBC comedy show of the early 1990's called Keeping Up Appearances. And unlike any of the other tribute videos this one has Mary Millar singing a beautiful song by the name of Beauty And The Beast from the london cast recording of the musical version of Beauty And The Beast in 1996/1997. Mary Millar passed away on the 10th of november 1998 of ovarian cancer. Neither Geezworld234 or Adam060756 claim any true ownership of this video content. I was lucky to work with Mary - I was Musical Director when she played 'Mrs Anna' in Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I, in a regional theatre production in the UK. She was fabulous to work with, beautiful and funny and utterly professional.
As an American, I am so missing the stars of Keeping up Appearances and Are You Being Served. They were an important part of my life. The whole USA loved them. Gone but not forgotten.
RIP Mary Miller the performance and entertainment world has lost a beautiful star, a Jem, PBS introduced me to keeping appearances. years ago when they aired it on weekends , my personal 1# British comedy series
What a talent! I don't know if people understand that the person singing this beautiful rendition of Beauty and the Beast is Mary Millar!

I have tears in my eyes; I did not know, until today, that Mary had died in 1998.. She was a remarkable actress!!!
Here in Melbourne, Australia, we read in one of our Daily Newspapers in 1998 about the passing of Mary Millar. RIP.
Rose was my favourite character played by Mary Millar.

Everyone needs a friend in their lives like rose, funny , giving, sincere, always up for fun and would always be there for you.
My birthday is (7-26-54) hers was (7-26-31) she passed away to young (62),,she was a hoot. Loved all the cast..but loved her a lot...hope your in heaven chasing rainbows..without the rain. Just bows..wink

Her daughter Lucy was a teacher in my secondary school, very nice lady and she spoke very fondly about her mother!!!

Some amazing comedians but multi tallented people were involved in Hiacynth's world. And she just captured my heart. This other lady too. A beauty and a fabulous performer.
How wonderful it would have been if Mary and Patricia had done a duet with Emmet at the piano, pure TV gold.
But Patricia was not supposed to sing on tone, since Hyacinth could not sing a note.
Lovely reminder of a great lady. Kept our spirits alive for a long time.

I didn't know she had died. I'm kind of sorry I read this. Oh well, she was so likeable. If some women played this part, you'd just say, "Oh, she was just the "town tramp", but she brought SO MUCH HUMOR AND HEART TO THE ROLE......................we really LOVED HER!!!! The lady that took her place was "OK", but she didn't have that same "softness and vulnerablity" that made Mary Millar SO LOVABLE!!!!!! My belated condolences to her family, both off-screen and on.
Other way around. Mary herself was the replacement, for Shirley Stelfox, who did the first season, but then had other commitments.

Found out recently that she had a fantastic career in musical comedy. She was the original Madame Giry in Phantom of the Opera. But her Rose was the best, especially when you consider she was a replacement. My favorite was when she wanted to be a nun and was whacked out on tranquilizers.
SJ Cohen wanting to be a nun is my favorite also. Mary was a wonderful actress and I’m sure a wonderful person also.

I worked with Mary in the musical 'Hans Andersen' in 1983 at Yvonne Arnaud theatre in Guildford & then Churchill theatre in Bromley...She was delightful & mixed with all the cast on all our after show meals/pub...etc etc

Seeing posts from 7-9 years ago and am just now learning of her passing. She added an extra comedic flair to the show. Keeping Up Appearances was among the top BBC shows that actually captured my humor attention. RIP

How sad, I was watching all the bloopers then there were videos saying how many of the cast had past away, this show used to make my family's nights feel warm and normal, like a fire in winter or a soft freshly washed blanket, the sound of the show gave our home a serene feel, in Tasmania English shows are really treasured for that reason, thank goodness for DVDs and reruns, then it feels like they are with always, they have left great comfort for the people who adored their characters, God bless our rose 🌹 🤗😔🌟.

Yeah she past away November 10th , 2 days after my birthday in 1998. The same year my daughter was born. So sad. She was my favorite Actress that played ROSE. R.I.P precious 🌹🌹

Oh what an absolutely beautiful tribute to such a talented lady. Thank you so much for posting this. How nice to hear her singing too as she was such a versatile performer. This is such a beautiful song and her rendition is absolutely touching. Death always makes me uneasy even though it's a part of life. She strikes me as someone who was extremely brave throughout her precious life, even through the cancer that took her life. I am so grateful to have been exposed to her remarkable talent.

Lovely singing from Mary Millar(RIP). I didn't realise that she sang. I knew Patricia Routledge is a trained singer and has done musicals, but I am surprised at the quality of Mary''s singing voice. I would have loved to has seen her in a musical. One I discovered lately is "Ann Veronica". it was release on CD in Late September 2015 by Stage Door Records. Long my she be remembered,

Still not forgotten…. Still tears run and it is June of 2023. It is not easy to bid farewell to someone who brought joy and laughter after a grueling work day through the screen of the TV. Too many memories too much hurt.

I learned of Mary Millar's passing about 12 years ago.. and i only found out by accident when a friend and i stumbled across this video.. and i had no idea she could sing!! I loved the show Keeping Up Appearances (and still do), having just watched a DVD i googled her name to learn more about her and came across this video again, hence me commenting now. Taken way too early... beautiful, funny and talented lady she was.

My favourite character in this show. Devastating she died so young. Multi talented. I wish there was a place we could go to pay respects. I wonder if her family stayed in the area of south east London where Mary lived. The character Rose is genius and I know quite a few Rose’s even now in 2021! I hope her family take comfort in knowing how much Mary was loved by KUA fans
