I graduated my oldest two years ago using CM methods and dictation was the Absolute Best way to teach spelling. He struggled with spelling and the dictation was so so helpful!!!!! We used Spelling Wisdom. I hope you see growth in his spelling.
Oh I just love CM!! I tried going with Memoria Press this year and I’m scrapping it all and going with my heart, which is Charlotte Mason. This video has helped me to not feel so bad about dropping curriculum so early but I don’t want to keep forcing something to work that just..doesn’t! Artist study - 10 min per week is all you need 💛
What you’re explaining with narration and copywork is how writing with ease curriculum teaches writing. I haven’t used it but I’m looking into it for my daughter. It kind of mixes brave writer jot it down and partnership in writing plus charlottes Mason narration and copywork/dictation. But adding the classical approach of persuasive writing and public speaking. Writing and rhetoric is very similar but you start after 3rd grade because the child does the writing- unless you transcribe for them. I use this one for my oldest. Thanks for sharing your process through choosing curriculum because the way you brainstorm helps me think about what I’m using or needing/wanting.
Oh CM method is amazing! It's been great for certain things for our family. Narration is the foundation of CM LA/composition but it never worked for my oldest that just couldn't doing having ASD. I kept on and kept on with dictation through SCM, and all the other principles through AO but the narration never worked for him. My other 2 worked great and I think narration is hard but so essential. We moved to something a bit different this year to help my oldest because he needed the structure, so we went with with Writing with Skill by Well Trained mind. It's been great so far and we are going with the flow. ANYWAY, I'm glad this seems to be working! If you can get narration, it will be a blessing. I wish mine could do it.
Definitely read “Know and Tell” by Karen Glass. She breaks down narration by age/form. There’s an excellent chart in the book as well. We use SCM Spelling Wisdom/Using Language Well. At first it seemed it wasn’t going to be enough, but then after reading through the lessons later in the book, I changed my mind. :)
We are using SCM Spelling Wisdom and Using Language Well and we are loving it. It is a perfect fit for us. We are also trying to implement more of a Charlotte Mason way of learning into our homeschool.
Early on in watching your video I was thinking, wow it sounds like your children would really benefit from copywork. Great job researching and choosing a path that you believe will benefit your children.
Oh, I also was just recently given Spelling Wisdom. After looking through it I am so impressed. My third child will be in third grade next year and I am holding on to this book for her. My older kids will need one of the later books I believe.
I am listening to CMs books and I love hearing her perspective but it only really makes sense because of having listened to Sonya from SCM for the past couple years. Good luck on this new resource!
We tried Learning Language Well and Spelling Wisdom, and we did like the philosophy behind it versus spelling lists. However, we ended going with Spelling You See and have had great results.
Hi Angie. I didn’t comment on your previous video as I live in a state that doesn’t require standardized tests. BUT! You and I are at the same place regarding language arts. We use Logic of English and when my oldest finished Foundations I of course (!) bought the entirety of Essentials and… it is definitely not geared towards 7-year-olds. The focus on grammar-serious grammar technicalities-in Essentials is overkill at this age. So I’m all, Where to go from here?? 😅 Sonya Shafer of Simply Charlotte Mason has been my unofficial guru for the past several weeks. I’ve been watching all their videos on LA and reading all their blog posts. I have most of the books you mentioned in your previous video. You said you’ve been reading about narration for two years now, and I laughed out loud. Same here! It was encouraging to hear narration is working so well for y’all. I’ve decided we’ll continue to use LOE Essentials for my oldest, but using it at level A only for phonics review and spelling. I am going to add in Writing With Ease Level 1 and First Language Lessons Level 1 and select “readers” for him to read aloud to me/us for fluency practice. I’d love if you plan for a walk-through/review on the curricula you chose from Simply Charlotte Mason. Enjoy the weekend! Cheers! --Anne
I think that narration is a really powerful tool and skill to build, and can work very well together with Sonlight. Really interested to see how your new resources come together for LA!
“Let it go!” 🎶 (You made me think of that 😊) I’m so excited for you to begin with CM language arts methods! Narration has been so good for my kiddos 🙌🏼 We us it for all subjects. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! And yes, don’t worry about written narrations this year 😊 Have you read “Know and Tell” by Karen Glass.
Haha, thanks for the encouragement - I love knowing that it has been working well for your kiddos :) I'm always a little anxious starting something new!
I'm curious to hear your thoughts on why you decided not to go back to First Language Lessons and Writing With Ease. I just watched your comparison video of writing curricula and it sounds like you really liked it. I'm considering using FLL myself, so that's why I'm so curious about it specifically!
I considered it, but I wanted to stream line a bit ... and I already had copywork through Sonlight. So, I just wanted to add Using Language Well/Spelling Wisdom for mostly spelling! But, I still think FLL is a wonderful program!
Excited for you and your monthly detailed update on how copywork is helping in spelling. 🥰 i am also drawn to CM as it helped me break away from traditional learning. I am learning a lot though I haven't incorporated much of her philosophies since it's not a good fit for my son. Unlike your son, mine doesn't like narration 😅, but THRIVES in discussion questions. He is more drawn to discussing what we've read than narrating back to me, and i'm fine with it, as long as he is learning. ❤️
I love the tweeking! I am hoping taking a more "out of the box" approach this year with some things this year engages my daughter in her learning in a big way. It is very hard to let go of the check boxes and the way I was taught in school. Each year it gets easier, but the pull is still there. Thank you for once again sharing your journey in an honest way.
Hi! I’m popping on here to ask you if you can direct me to the video that you did talking about old earth creationism. I’m wanting to get the books, but I can’t find it :)

Lately, I’ve also been looking to incorporate Charlotte Mason concepts into our homeschool.

I need to re-read Know and Tell :)
I just purchased several of the Simply Charlotte Picture Study Portfolios! I'm really excited about it!
Me too!

Haha, yeah it can be hard to explain it all and I only understand it all after reading a bunch and listening to Sonya 🤣
@@sciencemama I also feel like I will learn to be a good mom and educator by the time my kid is an adult 😂

I was thinking that it sounds alot like Spelling you See and making in even the Brave Writer Jot it Down.
