When i heard this in Feb 78, just turned 20... opened up mind and heart to new world of possibilities. I had not heard this tune in so long. just yesterday came on a Pandora Metheny station i have while driving through the plains of s/e Colorado back to Denver) ... still fresh, and exciting, and joyous!
My first Contact with Pat Metheny group was in a jazz radio sending late night the tune San Lorenzo, its was amazing, its change my point of how you are conected with these compositions and your soul.
OMG I have to play April Wind. I'm going to learn this if it kills me. Just one of the best guitar peices ever composed. Repeat listening over and over.
Sono passati 40 anni da quando seguo il Pat Metheny Group ed ancora adesso trovo sempre qua cosa che mi sorprende e mi entusiasma... Pat e Lyle forever
I too think this is one of the best albums ever made. I consider Pat one of the greatest American composers of all time. I had this album on vinyl and wore it out. And almost 40 years later it can still hold it's own with anything out there. Their's an old saying I'm reminded of. Only quality lasts !!!
It was like nothing we ever heard, or nothing we will ever here..... timeless record.... timeless music..... so many superlatives so little time.............
Richard Ballard - A lot of PMG compositions are joint affairs with Lyle Mays with Mays arguably being the slightly more dominant influence especially in this style and era of the band. So give Lyle his dues as well.
i was 20 when this came out. Pat was 24. Saw PMG at RPI Field House in Feb 78. Completely changed my view of everything! Saw band again in the fall of 78 in NYC. When the band used to jump off the stage at the end of the shows and come hang out with the audience, I told Pay and Lyle that i was excited i get to grow up listening to them play!! Got the biggest smiles from both!! This is beauty to be shared!
You did mean Pat and Lyle, didn't you? I sure would love to meet them both. I did try to guess in what musical time "The First Circle" was and had my twin sister, Maggie, write it down on a napkin and pass it to Pat. He was thrilled, and said I came the closest to anyone who tried to figure it out. I said 18 8 time. I was off by four; it was 22 8. He got a kick out of it, and I was all the way in the back, and when he mentioned my guess, I stood up. I was shaking I was so nervous. Pat does so much for people's self esteem, especially when he teaches musicians how to improvise.
In all the years since 1978 I don't recall a more melodic Bass solo than what Mark Egan played at the start of April Joy. I still get a dopamine dump each time I hear it. It is truly a "joy".
In DFW we had Q102 and The Zoo, both rock stations in 1978. In 30 minutes of time, you might hear some Pat Metheny, Van Halen's brand-new album, The Police, Kansas, Steely Dan, and Alan Parson's Project. People could actually learn about new music and artists, and it was a remarkable time to hear it. All of those artists were cutting some of their first material.
such a healing sound...like the sound of windchimes...a humming bird feeding on nector...as you can tell I love the methany method...thanks vainadigital
It's now 2018. Hard to believe it's been 40 years since was released, I still have the vinyl copy I bought not long after it hit the record stores (remember those?).
it is impossible not to get caught up in this song/pair and in the album. one of the finest trios ever; one of the best sounds ever. I couldn't help but get the song list and play every song. It had been years since I heard this. Now I'm sharing this on FB and Twitter. I can't help but to share this. a joy - a pure joy.
Why is it with Pat's music...that you can hear one of his compositions for the first time...and know in your soul that you've already 'felt' it forever? You know where each note is going...before it even gets here. Deja-music? I guess you could say it's 'fun, hearing his music for the first time....again'. I'm not afraid of getting to the end of the internet...or getting to the end of life...I'm afraid of getting to the end of Pat's music.
+Master Rebel In 1982, I was 18, and I felt exactly the same. And I'm afraid of the end of his music. This is the music I want to be played at my funeral!
Believe it or not, I have an answer for you. I watched a video of Pat talking about his playing style and he said, (not verbatim, but close): "When I am playing really good, I am not really thinking about anything. I am just listening. Playing is more about listening than playing. If I play one note and I really hear how that notes fits with what everybody else is playing, then there is a person inside of me that is a fan of me that is a listener. Then I just kind of ask the listener, if you are listening to this, which you are, what would you like to hear next and then I play that. So it really becomes the listening part of me that is the leader of the melodic phrase. I am really just kind of listening".
How delicate is the last 1/3 of this song?! Can't stop listening. 7:00 - 9:15: Soulful, genuinely emotional part. It always gives me goosebumps. 9:16 - end: Piano becomes more intense, followed by the other instruments. I always feel like my mind is out of my head. 9:27 - 9:40: Drums make my heart shake with the rhythm.
The second part of this tune where L Mayes olays his melotron or synth its jus awesom, I consider this and Au Lait the best songs of PM. Greetings from Fresnillo Mexico
Para mí este álbum es una Obra Maetra., San Lorenzo, Phase Dance, Jaco, Aprilwind, April Joi uuff! Salvajes!!
I'm here to share positive vibes and listen to Pat Metheny. I'm not exactly sure what drove you to comment on what I said or why your challenging my appreciation for the song but you can troll someone else. Don't drink the bongwater Johnny.
I am a progressive Rock guitarist, and i LOVE Pat! He rocks! Met him in 1992 NICEST guy ever! I always consider his music PROGRESSIVE JAZZ. Rather than jazz. Its alot like progressive rock at times! Different parts with different time signatures! Just a melodic master of the guitar!
This is one of the best albums ever made.
Shayne Swenson Absa fucking loot lee!! A beautiful work of art.

@shayneswson you are absolutely right. I´ve bought this album in 1979, was 17 years old.
I fully agree with you.

I couldn't live without his music ,,, all of it
ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL,JOYOUS PIECES OF MUSIC YOU WILL EVER EXPERIENCE..WHAT A GROUP!
When this came out, nothing sounded like it and it took about ten years for others to start incorporating what it offered. Pure genius.
OMG I have to play April Wind. I'm going to learn this if it kills me. Just one of the best guitar peices ever composed. Repeat listening over and over.
I've been learning First Circle in the single guitar finger picking arrangement. After about a month, I'm 10 seconds in 😂
It's a Nashville tuned guitar.
@@HermeneuticarRick Beato did a nice analysis of it
What more can be said than this is genius!!!! Less is more.......
I was born in April, this tune is my birthday anthem :)
Lukasz Klimkowski Mine too. Bday in a week
One of my favorite artists of all time!! Huge Pat Metheny fan!!
Si Verónica, comparto tu opinión, para uno de los cinco mejores músicos de todos los tiempos. El Maestro Pat.
These tunes started their life as exercises in a guitar ensemble Pat taught at Berklee I was the bassist. Lucky me!
yes you was!
Sono passati 40 anni da quando seguo il Pat Metheny Group ed ancora adesso trovo sempre qua cosa che mi sorprende e mi entusiasma... Pat e Lyle forever

Yes, I am the real Mark Egan and thanks again for the kind words! Sorry,I don't check into this video so the delay in getting back to you.
Mark, been a huge fan since '78 while in my Soph HS yr. Thank you for putting out the great music!
As acoustically beautiful as can be... Makes me transcend back to 1978..though I was only a kid then!
Awesome tune from the good 'ole days. Nostalgic.

PMG’s white album is one to revisit year after year. The sound of springtime and rebirth.
A fantastic album by an unreal band!!
I am trying to learn it on a twelve string! I am primarily a drummer, but have known Pat since 1983 or so. Music Rules! BobbyO

Sweet. Brings back wonderful memories
What superb musicianship all of them have and this album is worth listening to time and time again for all it's worth too.

Heard an interview with Pat where he said that he felt like everything he has done is part of one song that just keeps growing.
About his playing, he likes to play on one string for practice.. Alohz

If there's one thing we like here at Contemporaries Inc... It's Contemporary Jazz ;D
Most excellent
bellisimo
can't think of anything more sublime than the moog - guitar duet between 6:18 - 6:55
I love the song "Hermitage", and I can't remember which album it's featured on, but I think it's this one. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.
That was on New Chataqua. Spelling is probably wrong dear.
This section is haunting, very progressive,
