Mary Blair, the Disney artist that did "It's a small world" has some interesting colour blockwork. She seems to be quite influenced by Klee. This one reminds me of her illustrations. Cheers! I'm still binge watching your channel.

You are so right: we love watching you do experiments on the fly! The "what if?" and "go for it" and the dialogue with the work and the process are golden. Could you make copies of your stencil (one for each color) and cut out the shapes on each one to be printed in that color? Just make sure to register each stencil so they all print where you want them. I love your work!
Absolutely! I was winging it, improvising and thought i'd post my first dabble. Yourself and Marjike have already come back with suggestions that would improve the process!!!11
There was an art movement in France with stencils. Pochoir prints around the turn of the century in art deco, see S. Chompré. I just recently stumbled across those and was fascinated by their complex layering of dozens of stencils in these pieces.
Your technique I'd call reduction stenciling and is an interesting technique. Thanks for sharing. Again I'm in awe.

I enjoy your videos so much! Thank you for your generosity in sharing your ‘artist’s mind’ as your explore, invent, retool and consistently inspire. I find most gelli plate tutorials useful to an extent but you bring the ‘art’ in. I think all artists are pretty curious in general but you keep building on what you just did. You are a wonderful example of great teaching through trial and error, humor, and open mindedness. Love them all. I just bought a huge gelli plate, I have all different sizes and really love the round ones. I print on big sheets and the plate shape itself becomes a design element. I’d love to see if you have any interest in experimenting with this. I also love how your materials are readily available and more democratic. I still think you should be a u tube star. I watch tons while I work, I love learning new techniques. Yours are jam packed, much better than most. When I look at the millions of art supplies I hoard I find myself wondering what you might do with some of them. I hope you keep going, you are keeping me sane while I recover from surgery and I’m grateful. Vik

Planning on keeping the materials in the vids simple in hope they are more accessible and cut down on buying loads of stuff, particularly plastics. Love the first one in particular. When you got pink paint on your hand and said you were going to wash them I laughed … I’d just have wiped it on my apron 😂 I enjoy hearing you talk through your processes.
Would normally wipe it on the apron, or trousers!!!
You can buy inexpensive Perspex sheets around the right size for all different sizes of gel plates from eBay. Definitely a handy way to keep your gel plate mounted.

@@yeatesmakes It will change your Gelli plate life! Although it obviously does make it harder to just print a section of the plate, but it’s easily removed to do that

Love that you show what goes wrong!
A little tip, in your second print, if you don't want the offset, layer the colors on the plate (orange and white) then print. Remembering that what goes on the plate first will be the top layer once printed (i need a sign saying that, as often as I've messed that up...)
Hi there, i tend to show most of what goes wrong or what I'm not happy with!!!! Your tip is, of course, totally spot on! That's the joy of putting experiments up on TH-cam, it gives a little nudge to people but, in the comments, I get loads of diagnosis back!!
@@yeatesmakes 😀 yes, you certainty give nudges. I've received a large gel plate for Christmas, and it's been sitting on a shelf, silently mocking and intimidating me ever since.
Your videos have given me some tricks on how I may start dealing with it though. I love your large "collage" type prints using laser prints for some layers.
I usually use my gel plates to make collage papers for backgrounds in my mixed media stuff, and I have made some small booklets printing the papers on the gel plate, and that's all been fun.
I guess I'll just have to resort to making an actual appointment with my big gel plate in my calendar (that usually tricks me into doing stuff)...

I'm so glad you had your first design drawing-side up, it's exactly what happens when you're trying out ideas...much prefer it to videos that pretend nothing ever goes wrong!
I love this technique though my knife skills for cutting out are nowhere near as accurate. I also suspect l would have torn the paper peeling off the gel plate and lost some of the bits! All good pitfalls to know about.
I really love this technique! I enjoy watching you experiment. When you show us your “mistakes”, it makes your work seem more approachable… if that makes any sense. It gives people permission to experiment and not feel bad about wonky outcomes. Thank you!

Love this use of the gelli plate, I've used this idea with acrylic sheet before, never thought of using my gelli plate, great idea. Thanks for your inspiration.
Works pretty well, you get a lovely smooth finish but with some patches of interesting texture, fairly defined edges etc. worth a go!!

Interesting choice of colors! I recently began volunteering at a nursing home. Opera Pink is a favorite for men and women, alike! I love Klee-your instruction gives us insight for recreating this style. Thanks!

@@yeatesmakes Yes. Projects have to be scaled by physical ability, etc. There is a range of abilities from down-right professional to simple experimentation.
I love this approach of an adaptive stencil. Cutting lots of layered stencils and registration can be really off putting but doing it this way will be great to generate ideas!
Its a fun way to work, kind of a lose plan but lots of room for improvising !
It would be really cool if you did a piece inspired by Fracis Bacon, if you haven't already. He used very unusual colours and combination. Id love to see your take on Bacon.

Hi Toni. I know Faith Ringold's work and love it but had never come across Romare Bearden - oh my, its beautiful. Oh my goodness that was awesome tutorial but I'm pretty sure you had a lot to do and also some hard times with that one. The moment I saw that you've chosen the black parts first, I said how he would be able to see the other lines after covering the whole piece with black?! And then it was you who was struggling with it. 😁 anyway I just wanna say thanks again for all the effort you put on this project and made an awesome tutorial, full of tips and tricks and experiences that are useful for the audience. Thanks for the video. Lovely results. I keep thinking that there must be a way to organise it a bit easier. So that you don't have to lift the gelli plate at all. Hinge the two papers on each side of the gelli plate and cut out the parts you want to give colour. flip it on the plate and roll over the paper. (you have to ink the brayer on the side). then flip the paper with the cut out parts back an take the image from the plate with the hinged paper on the right. clean the plate and work on the drawing on the left. And so on.
Of course you could do this without a gelli plate, but you will have trouble to fill the cut out spaces totally. Because of the softness of the plate I think you can fill the cutout spaces neatly. Maybe a incomprehensible description of my thoughts. But i am going to try it right now.
Hi Marijke, love your comment, love your thinking. The good thing about filming a first try at an idea is that people are, like yourself, going to see ways in and around. Learning together! You could just paint with brushes of course! But I really like the texture and even coverage you get with gel plate and, as you say, its an easy way to get a neat transfer of the shape you want.
I'm going to try your double hinge technique - will save on some of that reassembling and reducing stencils shapes all on the one sheet. You could use them again far more easily.

If I'm understanding your description, the issue I see here is that you'd once again be printing over the drawing. Either that, or you've got to figure out how to cut the subsequent paper shapes from the side of the paper not in contact with the plate, either 1) without removing the drawing from your hinge (if it's flipped off of the gel plate) or 2) without cutting your plate (if the drawing is flipped onto your plate).
Gelli Arts makes a registration tool that could simplify this process: See "Gel Printing With the New Gelli Arts® Perfect Placement Tool by Marsha Valk" (at th-cam.com/video/-HZB4SZvra4/w-d-xo.html ). You'll have to watch that video for the rest of this to make sense, but it's probably worth it: It should be relatively straightforward to make a similar device out of stacked corrugated cardboard L-shapes. Use small strips of the same cardboard to register the paper and stencil against, in place of their more-complicated peg system. You'll sacrifice flexibility, but you'll get similar results for a lot less money.
You'd likely have to construct a registration L-shape for each unique combination of different-sized paper and/or gel plate. But if you cut your stencil from the same size sheet as the paper you're printing on, both should align properly against the same braces (/on/ the L), while the gel plate aligns nestled /into/ the L. (This will make sense, once you see the video. It's really a clever and simple method.)
Love the resulting images, Mark, both in this one and the Matisse style that preceded. However, there are some significant audio issues in this one, again. The sound levels are all over the map. Either I lose some of what you say, or other parts of the video (and the ads!) BLAST out of the speakers. Or out of my headphones (which is worse, at least from a cardio-vascular perspective). Still, beautiful and playful results, yet again.
@@yeatesmakes Well, i tried my idea and I have to say, not much advantages. only one was that I didn't have to pick up the gelli plate each time. The solid covering of the shapes work better when you ink up the whole plate. Besides I had to do a lot of washing and drying the gelli plate and my palette on the side. Had to do as much of cutting and reassembling as you did. So, for me , not a success but had a few hours of playing and that was of course the best part of it.

The mission this year is to get some decent audio and visual equipment!!! haven't come across the placement tool - cheers for the heads up. Sure I'll be able to rustle something similar up. @@Xenopticon I have made a registration L-shape that works wonderful with my (reduction ) lino-cutting. Never thought of using it here. The drawing side came on the gell plate and when I flipped it over, I could cut into it easily, so that was no problem .

Hi there, someone commented on one of the videos recently that mixing a tiny bit of washing up liquid with watercolours helps them settle on the plate without separating. Gonna try this in a video soon :

Mark, thanks for offering such a great channel! I really appreciate the gel plate experimenting. I’ve done a fair amount of gel printing but a lot of your techniques are just what I needed for my work!
A couple of questions. My first effort with this stencil technique didn’t work too well. The transfer of paint to the paper wasn’t even and didn’t go to the edges of the cut opening, no sharp clean edges. I’m using Amsterdam acrylics. Thinking my stencil paper is too thick (80lb paper), not pressing hard enough (though used lots of pressure I think), not leaving to to dry long enough (10 minutes) or using too much or too little paint. Any suggestions?
Also, not used to using acrylics with soft brayers. Do you wash it after each color or just get most off by rolling it on scratch paper. Bit of paint remains, I’m not sure if over time that will ruin the brayer.

Hi Bob. I think you'll have to experiment with thickness of paper, I was using 140gsm. More important is the amount of paint - an even but slightly thicker layer than you'd use for image transfer. working quick and adding the requisite pressure to work up to the edges of your cut stencil is also important : ) My brayers are a mess! I usually just use scrap paper then soak and scrub 'em later!
You could have made a stencil for each color. Great pattern

What about using a water-based printing ink? Wouldn’t the coverage and opacity be more predictable?
Mark: 2 questions. Do you have 2 separate breyer/rollers for paint and gel medium, and how do you clean the paint off the breyer?
Hi there, I have a few brayers and just clean them, either on scrap paper or in the sink, as I go.
Hi Mark. you could have made 4 copies of your original and just cut out the different shapes from each copy without worrying about taping up all those little pieces. 😉
Next time!!!.... I might have another go but this time planning out the piece more carefully so I know which colours are going where before I start. This way your great suggestion of four copies will make a difference and mean I could do a few prints - my weird taped together stencil was fit for the bin by the end of the video!!!!

If you transfer your painting on to different pages would that not be easier to cut and stamp? So you coul cut out each area on the next page. All what is important is to have the mark for putting the paper on. Or? So that would be my way, I guess but I did not such printing jet

I bumped into your videos and now I bought myself a gelplate, some acrylic and a roller. Don't think I bought a really good plate because I was really hard to take the plastic off. Really hard. Then I tried to make a transfer but the paper stuck to the plate. Is it the wrong paper? I was printing paper. Did I press to hard? It is cheap acrylic.is it too cheap? I just wanted one print 😭😭😭
Hi Marianne - don't despair! Myself and no doubt others who view the channel and regularly comment will help! What brand is the gel plate? What paper? How long did you leave it on the plate? How much paint? That will help me diagnose a few things!!!
