Can you make a dedicated video on how to measure inseam? I measure by spreading my legs on average of seat width and measure the vertical length, by that technique I have 31" inseam (5'8" height barefoot). I don't know whether this is correct technique or not.

I'm using the "cop mount"' to get on my bike. With the bike on the kickstand, you put your right foot on the right foot peg. It may help to turn the handle all the way to the left, first, for balance. Then, staying close to the bike, stand on the right foot peg and swing the left leg over.
Tip 2: don't ever let tall people tell you what you can and cannot do!
Edit: where I said handle to the right, I meant left... I'm sorry. I get this mixed up all the time 🙄 but hey, you'll get it because you know the words: practice practice practice ;-)

You should learn both cop and cowboy mount. Depending on the tilt of the bike, you may not want to get on one side or the other. Geography matters. Learn both ways so you have options.

      @@x-man5056 what is the difference?

    • @x-man5056
      @x-man5056 ปีที่แล้ว

@@caseycoleman394 Cop mount is on right side, Cowboy on the left. I have gripey L hip. I usually use the Cowboy because only discerning eye even notices. My bike has both pipes on right side but if there was something in my way of left side, I go to right side. If you parked on a slight slant to the right, the Cop mount may get weird because the bike is too strait up and down.
Biggest problem I have with either of them is to remember to do it, particularly dismounting.

If you’re a short rider(like me. 5.6 with a 25” inseam)(looong torso)and you decide to go out and try these techniques, you’ll find that they are very difficult and awkward.
Guess what? “SHUTUP AND PRACTICE”. You’ll be SO glad you did.
Put in the time. Be willing to fail in order to improve. These skills are truly the difference between believing you are limited to a “short” list of bikes of a certain seat height, and riding any bike you want.

    Interesting tips.
I must say that that for my 169cm height (5' 6'') tall seat height is a deal breaker as every stoplight would bring added anxiety to the one experienced focusing on potential threats (distracted drivers) from behind.
The latest ADV from Harley introduces interesting tech which automatically lowers the bike at a stop - this kind of innovation could bring closer shorter riders like myself to a lot of different taller models.
    Cheers

Doesn't work for countries like India where you're stuck in crawling traffic that requires you to have your feet down a million times. Thick sole boots comprise our only ally. It takes just a little while to get accustomed to that slightly disjointed feeling while shifting gears, but everywhere else, especially in tight u-turns, they are a true savior.

I agree and disagree with lowering the Bike, I agree that you shouldn't use lowering links or mess up with the front forks in the triple clamps, but since you mentioned RaceTech they can lower your bike in the CORRECT Way by lowering your suspension internals without upsetting any geometry of the bike and they do really amazing things. they can literally lower your motorcycle as much as you want.

I'm 5 foot 4 inches with about 28 inches inseam (on a 30.7inch seat). My "instructor's" advice: "it is going to be a problem". No shit, I knew that, but it is not really hard once you get used to it.
A very simple but crucial tip is to relax. The first time I rode a bike I was very tensed up and it made the floor unreachable. Once I relaxed (after 1-2 hours on the bike) I could reach the floor with one foot (mostly the ball of my foot) easily.
Be comfortable sliding left to right on the saddle. You only need one foot down! It might be left or right depending on situation.
    Practice, practice, practice!
I'm not sure if complex dismounting tequniques (used mostly in bicycles) are good for a begginer.

I had that crf 250L rally for two years. I am vertically challenged. I got on and off that bike with kickstand down. I would grab the front brake to prevent the bike moving forward which of course would suck. Then I simply hopped on the peg and threw a leg over. Maybe it was bad to put my weight on the side stand like that but like I said It worked fine for me for 2 years owning the bike. Off on the same way. Grab the brake and use the peg to climb off and on.. IDK that worked for me and seems a bit less scary then trying to hop on while the bike is in motion....

They wouldn't sell lowering kits if it made bikes dangerous. Yes the boots are a pain, and yes the lever changing is harder, I've now had the lever adjusted so it's higher up. It's true . I have seen guys with really short torsos so it goes that way too . When I got on a DRZ400 a few years ago when checking out that and the DR650 I thought no way this tall for my 1st bike . But these taller lower cc bikes are a hundred pounds less or more and that helps compensate when dealing with it leaning at an angle . I start leaning the Tenere 700 and it lets me know about it , this is at a stop or right before a stop .

I'm 60 years old and can put my 2021 Gold Wing on its center stand while still on the bike. I can *almost* do it just as I'm rolling to a full stop without having to touch the ground...almost, still need a little more practice on that one. But I said that to say this, you can do anything on a bike if you practice it enough.

On my Triumph Tiger 1200 XCX, even though I have a 32 inch inseam, with the panniers on and the tail bag on, I have to cowboy mount the bike. I cannot toss a leg over the seat or swing a leg over the bags. I learned to "Cowboy"!! Once on however. I can easily get flat footed even though it is a tall bike. Inexperienced riders should avoid tall bikes. Experienced riders can adapt because of the experience with different machines. Great video SenSei!!! Awesome as usual.

Don’t be afraid to hop off the bike and push it around to maneuver in tight spots where taller riders might duck-walk the bike. If someone heckles you for doing it, they are putting their poor character on display for everyone to see, it says nothing about you or your skills.
I have a 28 inch inseam, I ride an BMW R1250 GSA daily. There is a whole toolbox full of skills for short riders on tall bikes. You want to see those skills in action get some dirt on your tires. Even average size guys have to use these skills on dirt bikes. And, learning to ride off-road will help your on road skills.

I found not having a top case helps, especially when I need to quick mount off the bike to save it! As a side note do you regret buying the CRF250L? I recently bought a DRZ400S as a first dual sport bike and I found that I wouldn't want anything less power-wise. It comfortably cruises at 75 mph on the highway and the stock fully adjustable suspension is so good!

I think you erred by demonstrating this with a dirt bike. Yes they are all high and demonstrate the issues well. But dirt bikes need all that suspension travel.
I'm 5'7" with 29" inseam, lowering the bike correctly will enhance your street riding experience. 5" of ground clearance on pavement is enough. (if I go off pavement, it's only to turn around and get back on it) Yes, you might have to go diagonal across some speed bumps but having good purchase with the ground with both feet when desired is needed for street riding.
A young guy like you can sit at a long light on his left leg. I'm 69. Left hip and left knee creaky. Most lights are fast enough for only L leg down but certain long lights in town or when after a longer ride and a bit of exhaustion has shown up, both feet down for comfort and stability.
Rear suspension travel does shorten, so any lowering shock/spring you use needs to be a little stiffer than stock. A little stiffer spring is better than bottoming out. Don't be having that happen with regularity, it will compress your spine.

Greetings from Ireland Eddie thanks for sharing the knowledge it's really appreciated. I was once told that if you couldn't have both feet flat or near enough when on the bike that maybe it wasn't a good idea to ride that bike, your balance and ability to control the machine in certain situations especially in traffic would be compromised. Would appreciate your thoughts..

Sorry to post this random question but I am not sure how to contact you any other way. I like your content and style of teaching. Thank you for all you do to help others learn. I have a rather basic question and I cant seem to find much content on this specifically. What is the preferred method of coming to a controlled stop at a stop sign or stop light? This may be rather simple, but I would like to know a couple of situations in this type of stopping. Do both feet come down? If you know you are going to make a left or right, when do you turn the handle bars? Keep hand on brake (to keep brake light on for those behind you). What if on an incline/decline. Yes, it seems basic, but I want to learn what seems best and best for me rather than adopting bad habits.
