      A lot of the times when he would talk about the game, Id think to myself "man i wish i could have seen that whole thing in full context" or he'd give a specific example from a part of the campaign, and then leave it at that and itd be like "wait! but i wanna know what happens next!!" Its nice to be able to have the condensed in game examples, AND also have the live stream to see the full context as well as the conclusion.

      My understanding is that Anna intends to emphasise the "Lawful" over the "Evil" part of Judge's alignment. It's not like people fang around wearing alignment t-shirts or anything. Anna's already specifically stated that Judge doesn't openly wear any iconography that would reveal his allegiance to Asmodeus.
      People who interact with Judge probably know him as a loyal, honest and reliable person. As long as you're on _Judge's side,_ it would probably be very difficult to notice that he's "Evil".
      It's kind of a thing with LE characters: they're smart enough to not _appear_ to be evil.

    Really loved that moment with the whale in the wave when I saw it. That's the kind of stuff I want to work into my DMing more, just moments of pure storytelling that have little or no impact on the "story" of the campaign, but make the players feel like they are part of this living, breathing world.

      In your experience, do you feel that a spell like Magic Missile make minions worse when mixing 4e and 5e?

    • @mosrial6726
      @mosrial6726 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MrAverusi don't see magic missile making minions worse, magic missile existed in 4e and would do the same thing it does now. Plus the minions have done their job if you use magic missiles on them, they expended a resource from the party. Sure if you use it at first level you've taken down 3 minions, but you are out of a spell slot and that's 3d4+3 damage you didn't do to the boss. And you lose more damage on the boss and stronger spell slots if you up the magic missiles spell level. So I think minions vs magic missile is fine. :)

    • @amandavallerand7409
      @amandavallerand7409 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MrAverus I think minions are more about psychology than math. Sure, some strategies are more efficient against them, and others less so, but if they managed to make your players feel outnumbered but not outmatched, they did what they had to do!

      Also, you can "tweak" minions on the fly; I use something called "super minions" in my encounter design. I want eight orcs on the battlefield, but I want to send twenty orcs against the party. I'll have the first couple of orcs drop after two hits, and the last orc officially dies when the players deal the 20th blow against them.

    Oh, the impression I got when the ship's lieutenant piped up about the Rosso Cielo 'also sailing the planes of quintessence' and the crew hushed him, was that he unwittingly said something impossible to try to relate to Judge. It seemed like the people who hushed him knew that the area they would have to 'sail' through is a mountain or whatever, so there was nothing to ask after other than just embarrassing the guy for giggles. Maybe that's the impression the players got...?

    Thanks for including the spoiler talk. I think watching and listening to you plan something, predict what you think will happen, and then seeing it carried out is a lot more useful and gives us more insight into your thought process than even a lot of the Running The Game episodes since here we have the complete context. There isn't really a substitute for experience gained at the table and learned through play, but you're doing a pretty good job at providing a close secondary with this type of content.

    "You will find people online that say that the flattened math of 5th edition means you don't have to use minions"
    They're wrong. It's the opposite in fact. A 20th level fighter can only be expected to deal about 5 times the damage that a 1st level fighter does, but spread across 4 attacks (so each attack deals ~25% more damage). That's still not enough to kill anything more than a goblin/kobold in a single hit.
    And anyways, if something in 5e approximates a minion based on the power level, then using minions will only speed up combat, as players won't bother rolling damage, and you don't have to bother tracking hp.

    • @LordCyler
      @LordCyler 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I was thinking the same thing when this was said. The flattened math only makes lower level creatures an actual threat much later into the game than they used to be. It's the opposite of a good reason to not use minions.

    To the point near the end about not being sure if other DMs online have let the viewers in on the secret stuff before, I've seen it done a lot by a streamer. Not all the secrets are out in the open, but he does a lot of his GM prep on public streams, and on about half of his shows the stream is done from his roll20 window so chat knows what's about to happen before the players do very often. Even tho I watch the stream live, it still nice watching the campaign diary to get your perspective on how the session went. :)

    Hello there
    I didn't think I'd have a reason to watch these afterthoughts of the sessions, since I don't even watch the campaign
    But for some reason, it's good to listen to these, gives a lot of ideas and are perfect to do so for when doing something
    I'm feeling like I'm missing a lot in not watching the sessions. For now though, I'm considering it
    Also, that whale part you was chilling to hear, incredible!

      If 4e was released as a stand-alone fantasy RPG, it would have been hailed as a "new classic" of the genre.
      Calling it D&D while removing certain "legacy features" (saving throws, differing class mechanics etc.) seems to have been it's downfall. It's really quite odd that 3e could make objectively greater fundamental changes to the game (via the introduction of the d20 system) and be welcomed with open arms, while 4e could make changes that _seemed_ to be either minor (ie. replacing saving throws with passive defences) or widely called for (ie. giving Martial characters "powers" of similar scale as other types of characters).
      IMHO, most of the more sweeping criticisms made of 4e (like, "They've removed the roleplay!" and, "They've turned it into an MMO!") were outright falsehoods spouted in order to avoid admitting just how minor the things that made it feel like "not D&D" really were.

      @@nickwilliams8302 There are definitely problems within 4e. Especially in that it made your characters far more generic.

      Except it actually didn't. If anything, it _increased_ a player's ability to customise their character.
      What it _did_ do was give every class a balanced set of abilities. A 6th-level PC would have two at-will powers, two encounter powers, two daily powers and two utility powers.
      This resulted in the classes _feeling_ very "samey" despite all the variety actually on offer. There wasn't that _thing_ a particular class could do that made it stand apart from the others.

    • @dragatus
      @dragatus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nickwilliams8302 I think the whole "4E removed roleplaying" is mainly a failure of people to articulate themselves properly. What 4E actually did was to emphasize the tactical combat portion of the game and compared to 3E it was more gamey and less simulationist. The issue was probably people who liked roleplaying, but didn't like tactical combat nearly as much finding themselves playing a game in which tactical combat was even more highly prominent than in other editions of D&D.

    Phandelver!
    Hey Matt, I was searching something for phandelver in google and wrote "Phandelvers" and google translated it from Hindi to spanish (Phandelvers = Arañas = Spiders) (I'm chilean). I just wanted to tell you because in one of your videos you mentioned that it was a weird name... well it is from there. I didn't know so I wanted to share it.
    Thanks for your videos. Have a nice day.
