I think this will be my first lens upgrade over the kit lens. Honestly your s5 videos have been fantastic and such a great help ok getting me ready for setting mine up later this week. Keep up the good work Josh 😁
I love the 50 and was so happy with the price, wish they all would have stayed closer to that price point. Either way, this 35 might be my next to add to the collection.
Loving the new (or is it?) background setup, so clean Josh. Loving the videos you're putting out, it's made me decide to go for the S5 instead of waiting for the GH6.
Thank you dude! Really appreciate that! The background(s) in my videos are constantly changing, purely because I'm SUPER critical of everything I do and am still looking for the "perfect" set up. The light in the back definitely adds a bit of interest though! Ah that's awesome, the S5 is an absolute beast, I hope you're enjoying it!
Nice lens and images!.. what codec do you use on the lumix s5 iix for videos?… ive heard prores looks great along with BRAW but the files are insanely large.
@@JoshCameron I was looking for this comment! Josh, I'm a happy S5 user and I'm looking at af lenses. Do you know if Leica lenses work as well as Panasonic lenses in terms of AF?
Great review - there was a trend here in OZ with crew shooting events all on a 35mm Prime (ff equiv) and i can see why It is definitely a super versatile focal length - wide enough to bring in the scene (and a slow disciplined pan in video gives you wider angle info if required in an edit) yet tight enough to deliver some bokeh if you need subject separation. I suspect Video IS works better with these focal length than at wider angles (warpy corners be gone!).
Yeah I can see why as well - the 35mm focal length is honestly a favourite of mine, and if someone told me I could only use one prime lens for an entire shoot, it'd probs be the 35mm that i'd choose. Thanks for watching dude, hope you're well!
Very nice but a bit pricey for me perhaps... I use the 20-60mm Lumix on the S5 which is very good. A comparison of this 35mm with the 20-60mm set at 35 mm would be nice if possible? Thanks great content!
Looking forward to get this new 35 mm. I’ve found that 20-60 is great for video and landscapes, but for professional photo usage it has missed me so many shots that I’m not going to use on commercial projects for stills anymore.
Hey, can you share your opinion about this setup? I'm thinking about upgrading to it - i shoot mostly dance videos and movement concepts and i'm worried about the auto focus. Do you think the system will be good for that? Thanks!
I found this lens has a significant amount of barrel distortion. When videoing using internal recording, this is corrected by the camera. However, when using an S5 to record in raw format, the distortion is not corrected. Same issue if using a photo app that does not (or can not) apply the distortion correction automatically to the raw photos. I would have appreciated this mentioned in the review with examples shown of uncorrected photos and video.
You're basically looking at a tradeoff between light weight / matched sizes / native autofocus (Panasonic) vs. slightly faster aperture and tiny sharpness advantage (Sigma Art). Unless you need every last photon / eyelash, the Panasonic lineup is pretty compelling. Or perhaps you were talking about the new Contemporary primes from Sigma? In which case they are a bit smaller and cooler-looking than the Panasonics, but lack the native autofocus.
HI thanks for your great revue I bought one before even the 50mm 1.8 because I have a manual lens from meike the 1.2 f 50mm which is great but I needed a fst lens for gimbal photo work general purpose so that it is tx

I bought the s5 and 35 1.8 in great part due to your fantastic detailed videos. I should receive it with the kit lens tomorrow. What's your opinion regarding the lower quality slow motion video above 60fps, particularly 1080 120/fps at 8bit 4:2:0, 20-28 Mbs? I've recently seen negative comments about the visual quality.
Wahey! Has it arrived yet Eddie? Sorry I'm only just seeing this comment! Thanks for the kind words - So i rarely use the HFR options like the 100/120p. The quality isn't as good in those modes, that's for sure, but it all comes down to having good light. If the light is good then the HFR options can be really pleasing!
@@JoshCameron it has arrived and was out all day shooting today! Very nice rendering of colors in photographs. This camera doesn't have an APS-C photography mode does it? I was under the impression that it did so a bit of a disappointment. I'm about to see your Sima 28-70 2.8 video. I have the 20-60 kit. Ordered the 35mm 1.8 but now that I see doesn't photograph in crop mode I may reconsider lens options.
Oooooo I have been waiting for this one and may ask Santa nicely to ignore this year’s indiscretions 😂 great vid as always mate. So, gun to the head (figuratively) 35, 85 or 50 for your one and only lens??
IF I had a gun to my head, It’d probably be the 35…. BUT, that being said , the 24 and the 50 are amazing and probably would be better for other use cases, just the 35 is the “sweet spot” 😂
I'm guessing it's to keep the size and weight down as much as possible. The IBIS on the S5 and S1 is crazy good though, so I haven't found that to be too much of an issue (especially after rigging up the camera)
Excellent review, been watching your channel through out the past year and I am very pleased with your reviews. I've been looking for a new lens, and I think you have sold me on this. I was also looking into the sigma 35 1.4!
Thank you for supporting the channel and watching the vids, I really appreciate it, and if there’s anything you’d like to see just let me know :) yes, this lens is AWESOME! You’ll be very pleased with it :)
So to be clear, you did this video (and several other ones) with your 24-104, yeah? In that case f4 seems to work fine in lower light. And my planned Sigma 24-70 f2.8 should work even better. Since it could cover 3-4 prime lenses, just not sure about the impact of f1.8 vs f2.8...
Hey Josh, thanks for this review! I was planning to upgrade from my Canon 35 mm f/2 + MC-21 combo to a native 35, and this review both helps and confuses. For the latter part, I was wondering whether you would recommend going for this lens over the Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 for video work. I usually shoot between the f/2.8-4 mark even with a 1.8 lens, and use Single AF rather than continuous, so would you recommend this guy over the 28-70? In the ideal world I could buy both, but I can only afford one right now (and I do have the 50 1.8 and 85 1.8 already, if that helps) Thanks again for all your reviews and filming. The footage looks fantastic!
Hi Josh, how does the video quality compare with the 7Artisan 35mm which you have also reviewed. If you had to make a film with one of them, which will it be?
Thx for the video, quick question: I browsed through the flickr page of this lens. I noticed that @1.8 the bokeh is quite harsh with outlining at medium distances (full/half body portrait shots). I was wondering if this is your experience also? And: does the bokeh get smoother (less outlining) at f2, 2.2 and 2.5?
lol love the AF plug at 2:48. Yeah, 35mm is a universal focal length, but I really wouldn't feel the need to get it if I had a 24mm and a 50mm already. I'm not literally made of money! Oh Josh, by the way, have you ever filmed a round-table type event? If so, how did you record audio (assuming everyone didn't have their own mic) if I may ask?
Haha! No I get that, no one's made of money! But honestly, if you were able to push the boat out , then getting all 4 of the 1.8 primes would have you set for literally every scenario :) I've never filmed a round-table event actually - the most talkers I've had to film at any given time was only 2, so a boomed Shotgun mic did the trick!
It will pulse a little, yeah. That's just the contrast detect AF though - it's how it acquires its focus and can't be changed with any lens unfortunately. But it can be controlled and I don't have too many issues with it :)
@Josh I'm thinking to get this lens for TH-cam videos - my studio is a bit small, the kit lens is wide but the bekeh is non-existing; I have the 50mm f1.8 has great bokeh but not wide enough for the space/viewing range. I wonder using this lens for the small space close range (chest above) will it have good bokeh?
