    This has answered my years of questions about what Pentatonic shape to be played over which chord.
    Thanks so much.
    Please can you do for minor chord too.
    Thanks again.

    LOL, I was just practicing this when your video popped up, strumming alternating rhythms,major triples and doubles, and varying minor lead lines in between,
    not as efficiently as you do, but so fun to use the entire fingerboard, and use slides and bends.👍

      @@DarrylSyms Hey, I have another channel with music videos on it, and one I titled "Cannabis Relaxation", for search algorithm purposes, which probably was not useful anyway, but, go check it out, I have a series of very interesting progressions, I ham the trills a bit, but it's part of the theme, and it can repeat endlessly. Some interesting Pics by Escher, Yerka, Roger Dean, and some Fractals. Search "michael york cannabis relaxation", and see what you think, it's something you have never heard before I can promise you. The backing track is repetitive, but it's from 11 years ago so that's my excuse.

    Thanks. Starting with the third note puts us in the minor sound feel. So for a c7, the options to take the root note for the harmonics are - c, e, g. Also, c7 would naturally sit in scales of c (1st), g (4th), f (5th). Taking a root note c for a minor pentatonic wouldn't work because it doesn't fit the rest of the notes and playing the major pentatonic of c would change the feel (major). So a Em pentatonic really puts us in the mode of G scale and think of us being in the 4 of scale. A mode change to F would allow a Gm next ( also think of going from a major to minor), Dm fits F, and finally an Eb is a mode change treating the Dm as 3rd are nice modal changes to play to.

    Helpful video, thanks!
    The main reason i came to this video was to figure out what the difference between the A minor pentatonic and C major pentatonic scales were, since they share the same notes. I think this video clarified that up (seems to be related to Chord structure - basically a melody played in one scale would not necessarily gel with a chord played in the other scale, which puts my mind at ease - at least there's a good reason for 2 different scales to have the same notes but different root notes).
    I haven't really reached the chords part of the book I'm using (currently on scales), so if anyone wants to correct my comment, it'd be appreciated!

    I just tried this principle and it sounded awesome. Do you know what I can play on guitar (especially a chord progression) to match both an F# note and C note that occur one after the other? I made a drumbeat on an electronic multipad (with a looper) and it has those notes. I'm hoping to play guitar over top. The two notes occur in succession too fast to change chords fast enough to keep up.

    You're great at music theory honestly! 3rd, 6th and 7th major are all chords of the minor scale, meaning that 6th, 3rd, and 2nd minor intervals of a major chord are the minor scales containing that chord. So it's kinda the general case. Am I right? 😅

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you 🙂 Correct! Though, be careful with how you phrase this: "meaning that 6th, 3rd, and 2nd minor intervals of a major chord are the minor scales containing that chord" 🙂

    So for playing over an A major chord to G major chord to D major what pentatonic should i use ?? Ive seen people use A minor pentatonic which doesn’t make sense to me but does sound good

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, put simply, D major pentatonic. Your progression goes IV V I in D major, so D major pentatonic will work. A minor pentatonic is not correct, there will be some notes in there that do work, but some that are just “plain wrong” - hence why it doesn’t feel totally right 👌

    • @aa.mirezZ
      @aa.mirezZ ปีที่แล้ว

      A minor pentatonic works because it has the notes A C D E G and D major penta has the notes D E F# G A. The A minor has a flat 7th (c) which is C# in D major. The flat 7th is part of the blues scale and is what gives a distinct blues sound. Blues have the flat 7th, flat 3rd, and flat 5th. So if these notes are played it will give it a distinct bluesy sound and it almost sounds bad against the diatonic chords, but it gives it that blues quality which creates tension and gives the scale some color. In a theory context the scale isn’t diatonic to the key of D but the flatten notes give color and give a nice quality to the key when playing a solo. U can rotate between playing d major penta and a minor penta as well as d minor penta because d minor penta will have the flat 3 which is F and is a distinct quality in blues and is considered a blue note. Now this works because the rest of the notes with the exception of f (the flat 3rd-or blue note) are still the same as the diatonic scale/key of D. Now what you wouldn’t wanna do is play D minor scale outside of penta because it will have notes in it that will create too much dissonance and clash with the major key, but because the pentatonic omits the notes that would clash, it works well against the major tone quality. BB king is famous for mixing minor and major Penta in his music.

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It works, but it’ll still sound like “minor pentatonic” because you are treating the notes as if they were in a minor context 😛

    • @PeetaPlays
      @PeetaPlays 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DarrylSyms I'll be honest, I commented before watching the video :D
      Analysing it a little bit, it looks like with your approach, when playing minor pentatonic starting from the major 3rd of the chord / key instead of the 6th removes the 'chord root' from the scale and replaces it with a major 7th. This gives everything you play a different sound, as you never go back to the actual root of the chord. That's pretty cool, although it's a small tidbit that it's worth to be aware of :D
      It definitely gives you a better sound if you're visualising it as strictly minor pentatonic. Going back to the root of the scale gives you that sweet, sweet major 3rd over the chord (instead of the 6th) and avoiding the root of the chord makes you more 'jazzy', it's a win win ;P

      It doesn’t work with an F root? F is the 4th scale degree, so F works, but if you play the “minor pentatonic shape” starting on the 4th scale degree, you’ll hear some very strange things
